Are you more tense ?

As I've got older I think I've become more tense over things.
For example if I'm watching tv and during the build up to something dramatic and especially if they are playing tense music , I get taken along with it. Likewise a film I used to be able to watch I cannot as it's too scary. Am I alone ?

Yes I am much more jumpy generally especially as a passenger in a car and I drive more slowly than I used to.

Growstuff, I like your style and attitude. Great.

I have also become too afraid/tense/stressed to finish watching many movies. I never used to be like this!

I pre-record movies that look interesting then if the film starts to get tense I stop it and look the plot up on the internet (wiki) to find out how it ends. If the 'nice' people survive I'll continue to watch it. I think I just want happy endings now.

I also have noticed, since I turned 65 a few years ago, that it's very difficult for me to follow fast action in a film. It's another reason I record movies - so I can keep playing back the hard to follow bits.

I used to be a worrier until I read an article in a copy of Readers. Digest. It pointed out that the vast majority of our worries come to nothing and even with worries that come true events are often out of our control.

For a long while I would park the worry and think about whether I could do anything to change or improve the problem. If not I trained myself to let it go. I now find I don’t worry and think “what if” any longer. A godsend during lockdown.

I turned 70 & suddenly started worrying about all sorts of things. My DH is younger than I am & says it is driving him nuts.
I really do not know why but I am much more anxious these days.

I think it is an age thing. I cannot bear "thrillers"; even No9 the funny tv show is giving me the creeps. I think maybe it is blood pressure or that I feel uncomfortable being hyped up by these programmes. I can't bear too much excitement any more which is why I watch a lot of gentle tv shows or archive stuff (Can recommend Seaside Hotel on More4 for a pleasant easy watch).

I’m usually very laid back but I too find I can’t watch or read anything with a violent or abusive tone any more. I hate all those thrillers on tv that everybody raves about and although I watched the first series of The Handmaid’s Tale and loved the book, now the very thought of it fills me with dread and I haven’t watched any of the subsequent series.
Game of Thrones, Line of Duty, Killing Eve, anything featuring gangsters, I avoid them all and in doing so am probably missing some excellent drama.
So, as Chris Eubank said “I need light, and love, and laughter, not this dark heavy stuff. It lowers my frequency” and I agree. Maybe I’m just getting old ?

Music in films has always affected me from a very young age.
Shows how powerful it is.
If a drama is described as “gritty”, I will give it a miss. I had enough grittiness growing up. So no police, hospital stuff on the whole.
I now enjoy watching something’cosy’, a concept my rebel teenage self would heartily despise!

Everyone told me as I get older I'll not worry as much. So wrong, well for me anyway. I freak out about everything and as for the TV, I'm the mad woman who sits and shouts at it making my poor dog as tense as I am.
Love your comment Alioop.

My poor basset suffered similarly.
We watch the world today and listen to elderly people saying they are happy they don't have to cope with today's life as they had "the best of times" but today's young people will be saying exactly the same when they reach the end of their lives too.

katy1950 Wed 09-Jun-21 16:17:30

No you are definitely not alone I'm the same

growstuff Wed 09-Jun-21 15:29:40

I'm far less tense since I stopped working full-time, even though I'm permanently broke. I don't care about possessions; I have hardly any deadlines; I can organise my life how I want; I have time for friends, family and my relationship.

I have some health issues, but I manage them and don't worry about them. My blood pressure has gone down. I wake up every day and look forward to each new day. Life has never been better.

No I m not more tense especially with TV dramas etc I enjoy them them more than I used to I couldn’t be bothered at one time because there was tense things going on in my life but now I find trying to solve horrible crimes is quite relaxing
I think the older I get the easier I am about fictional nasties I still get tearful over real life sorrows no more no less than I used to and I still worry about my grown up kids as obviously I have no control over their lives but they are natural fears and concerns

rowyn Wed 09-Jun-21 14:04:14

Not so much tense as unable to deal with suspense in films or novels. I was never that keen, but the older I get the less I can cope. Whether it's because my ability to immerse myself in the story and empathise with the characters has grown with age or I just find life throws more and more challenges at you as you age, I don't know. But why put yourself through angst and agony for pleasure???
So I refuse to read or watch anything that will have me on edge, and have actually even started reading the occasional "old age chick lit " now and again!

Aepgirl Wed 09-Jun-21 12:59:32

I don’t like scary or mind-worrying films either, which I used to at one time. I just think we change in many ways as we get older.

sunnybean60 Wed 09-Jun-21 12:29:10

more tense and irritated with things need to work on chilling out

springishere Wed 09-Jun-21 12:22:19

Do you think it's an age thing? I find I can't watch anything with violence in it or even read thrillers any more.

Buffybee Wed 09-Jun-21 11:48:01

I don't know about tense while watching tv but I've certainly become more irritated with stupid plots and some of the ridiculous dialogue.
I end up saying to the tv, "Oh God, just shut up", or "what a load of rubbish" and turn off.

Juicylucy Wed 09-Jun-21 11:47:29

I’m with flexible friend nothing bothers me as I’ve got older, I take everything in my stride and don’t sweat the small stuff anymore.

CrazyGrandma2 Wed 09-Jun-21 11:44:57

The older I get, the more laid back I get. One of the benefits of ageing smile

grandtanteJE65 Wed 09-Jun-21 11:32:26

I wouldn't say I am more tense. I have never liked scary movies or films or books with a lot of violence in them - not even in historical documentaries, so no difference there.

What I have noticed for a long while now, is that I tend to become tearful about things I once would have shrugged off.

Grandmajean Wed 09-Jun-21 11:22:31

Yes, definitely more tense. Always had a soft spot for animals but now won't even read a book with an animal in until I've checked that it survives to the end ! I get really worked up going places in case I can't find the way / forget something important / etc etc. I get so annoyed at myself !!

Pinkshoes26 Wed 09-Jun-21 11:20:00

I am more tense and worried when I go out on my own, unsure of the way. In my own home I am more - go with the flo… find it a lot more easy living.

polnan Wed 09-Jun-21 11:17:58

Definitely, more tense.. stress , I blame the lockups!

Newatthis Wed 09-Jun-21 11:09:51

You know the music is compose specifically for each production to add ambiance to what you’re watching.this could be to create tension and the also feel good factor
