Calling all Scottish GNers - how do you pronounce this?

Greenock.

I’m asking because I keep seeing a TV ad for a cruise operator, where I can’t help feeling that they’re mispronouncing it. I dare say I could well be wrong, but I thought it was more or less ‘Grennock’ (short e) whereas they’re pronouncing the first syllable ‘green’, as in the colour.

For me - Green, like the colour.

But I'm an East Coaster so I could be wrong!

grannydubh Fri 11-Jun-21 13:30:24

Green for me too.

Alegrias1 Fri 11-Jun-21 13:32:08

Been to look it up smile Its from the Gaelic Grianaig meaning "at the sunny knoll". That would be pronounced Gree-an-aik so I'm sticking with Green like the colour.

Green for me also but I have heard it pronounced Grenock. Maybe you need to ask somebody who lives there.

Lolo81 Fri 11-Jun-21 13:40:00

Definitely green like the colour. Haven’t lived there, but have worked there.

Yes, Greenock. I think it's Greenwich that's causing the confusion.

Aveline Fri 11-Jun-21 14:12:10

Greenock!

BlueBelle Fri 11-Jun-21 14:24:35

Gren -uk but I m not Scottish so no idea if it’s right or wrong

Grandmajean Fri 11-Jun-21 14:49:17

I am Scottish and definitely Greenock as in the colour.

Grandmajean Fri 11-Jun-21 14:50:33

Meant to add that the Greenwich is the confusion.

Grandmajean Fri 11-Jun-21 14:51:28

Sorry - shouldn't be a "the" in the last message . Will shut up now before I make any more mistakes !!

Pronounced for me by someone from the Isle of Bute as Grren-uck.
And by someone from Greenock as Grenn*uck.

Callistemon Fri 11-Jun-21 15:06:05

Grennuck.

A kind of mixture between 'u' and 'o' iyswim

Callistemon Fri 11-Jun-21 15:07:49

Sorry more Grreen-uck.
Not Grren and not Green, kind of between the two.

(Oh dear, confusion.)

Aveline Fri 11-Jun-21 15:11:39

Don't forget Gourock! Stress on first syllable in each case.

Largolass Fri 11-Jun-21 15:34:19

Definitely Greenock as in the colour and I’m Scottish from the west coast.

Lovetopaint037 Fri 11-Jun-21 15:35:45

That is interesting. I’m not Scottish though mother was a Fraser! Thought there was no doubt about and I have been saying Grenock.

Grandmabatty Fri 11-Jun-21 15:46:17

I have always pronounced it Green - as the colour -ock. And I'm Scottish.

Lomo123 Sun 13-Jun-21 20:30:06

Green ock.

Esspee Sun 13-Jun-21 20:50:16

It is most definitely Green as in the colour but the ock is normally pronounced uck. The stress is on the green.

Esspee Sun 13-Jun-21 20:52:00

Should have said I am a weegie and sometimes worked in Greenock.
