I Do Miss…..

My teenage Saturday job was on the loose sweets counter in Woolworths. Happy days, I earned 19/6d.
My mother and I always bought our Christmas crackers and wrapping paper in Woolies.

My older sister was working when I was still about 7. She would take me on the bus to the town sometimes, and we always went to Woolworth’s where she would say “choose sixpence worth of sweets for yourself”. Such a simple joy but I remember it with fondness.

Yes, so do I. And I used them a lot, as did Mum. I remember it from early childhood when it seemed to sell so many marvellous things, from sweets to the Evening in Paris perfume (or scent as we called it then) my Mum wore on high days and holidays, to garden plants. And in my teens when it sold Miners and Outdoor Girl make up. And when my son was small and I could buy clothes for him there, Ladybird I think, and story books. Later they sold CDs and DVDs. I still have three vases that I bought there over the years, the oldest must be 55 years old, very good value.

Yes, no store has ever replaced the Woollies niche. Shame really. I remember it with fondness too.

Me too. I remember buying "Californian Poppy" perfume and bits of make up from our Woollies in my teens.

This is really tragic but I miss Little Chef, I never see them in the motorway anymore.

C & As I really miss it although it’s been gone years, I worked there when I left school at Marble Arch branch, bought my wedding dress there and you could buy everything from underwear to hats at reasonable prices.

I miss C&A my oh liked their shirts when we visited son in Germany he bought several shirts .

I remember going into Woolies and writing a cheque, I said to the girl behind the counter 'do I make it out to F W Woolworth' and she hadn't got a clue what I was talking about

Our Wollies! Again it conjures up memories of our teenage years and when we were young mums!

I think WILCO is the best replacement for Woolworths. I love having a walk round there - I always find things to put in my basket. The last thing I bought was a nonslip bath mat - it's by far the best one I have ever had - much better than the one from M&S

I bought Ladybird clothes there for my grandchildren as well. When I was young I used to buy their hard backed books with my birthday & Christmas money.
I also miss BHS their soft furnishings were excellent.

My go to place for lighting was BHS and for children’s clothes was Adams. I didn’t really shop in Woolworths although I had a Saturday job there on haberdashery which could have started my love of crafting.

I worked in Woollies in the Archway in London in the early 60s. It was my first job as a Saturday girl while still at school and I was paid the princely sum of 10/-. I was on the toilet roll counter. It was a friendly place and a happy introduction to the world of work.

I still have a much-battered laundry basket, given to me as a wedding present. I also still have several dolls that I was given or bought, that came from Woolworths. We also had some furniture that we bought when first married and which, although inexpensive, lasted for years

I miss Maplins, the electronics shop, which has closed its outlet on our High Street. It made a good creche where I could leave DH on shopping trips.

I think of Home Bargains as the new Woolworths. It is especially good for gardening things. I miss BHS as I bought nice towels from there.

Must concentrate more, me that is!

I read the OP title as in "I do miss"..... as in a classroom and speaking to a teacher.

I bought the best photograph albums ever at Woolworth. They are still in use. Much larger than the tiny ones you buy now so can't be replaced! I used to shop there quite often, and was a big C&A customer too. I miss them both.

I had a Saturday and holiday job at Whitby Woolworths, across from the harbour. The cellar would flood regularly and anybody with a quiet counter would be given wellies and a bucket and have to stand on the cellar steps scooping up the water and running across the road to pour it back into the sea. It always struck me as a pointless exercise!

It was a lovely place to work. I had spells on haberdashery (the quiet one!), the delicatessen, toys and the sweet counter. We had a free dinner from the wonderful canteen upstairs, and used to go home regularly with staff discounted food at the end of the day. Happy days!

We had a large C&A store, very useful, but it closed.
After having a presence in the UK High Streets since 1922 they withdrew from the UK in 2001, although there are still many stores across Europe.
There was a superb one in Düsseldorf when we lived there, with an amazing Ski / Winter sports section.

I miss Adams childrens wear shops, they had good quality clothes at great prices.

I loved their range of towels too. Lots of colours and sizes, good quality, so soft and thick.
I used to like Woolworths too, but Home Bargains, B&M and Wilko make up for it.
