When I was mistaken for a witch….?

Since the H word is coming up, I thought you might enjoy this.

Coming up to Halloween decades ago, when I didn’t even look anything like as much like a scary old hag as I do now, I went with dh to Homebase to find a besom broom, for sweeping leaves off the lawn.

Dh has always had a habit of wandering off and disappearing in shops, and that was no exception.

So having found my besom broom, and paid for it, I stood fuming by the checkouts, clutching my broom and waiting ages for him to re-appear.

Standing nearby was a woman with a little boy of maybe 4 or 5, who I suddenly noticed was cowering behind his mother’s skirt, his face just peeping round, his eyes fixed on me.
I was close enough to hear his fearful half-whisper - ‘Mummy, is she a witch?’
The poor woman was mortified!

Dds, , then in their teens, found it hilarious, and have told the story with relish many times since.

Hope you reassured the little beast! My husband was often mistaken for Father Christmas, he had white hair and and bushy white beard, he nearly always went along with!

Dd1 even told it to her German exchange family (Mum mistaken for a Hexe - I dare say it was a good exercise for her German) and they all found it riotously funny, too. Only the mother spared a bit of sympathy for me - ‘Die arme Mutti!
(Poor Mummy!)

Oops ??

Love your story Witzend. Years ago, when we lived in a very old house, I had a besom broom. It was the authentic 'witches broom' made of twigs and lived by the back door. A friend called to see me one day and when I opened the door she said, 'I knew you were home, your broomstick's here'.
I still chuckle at the memory.

I'm glad you posted this Witzend it did make me laugh.
I've been fuming at the check out waiting for a dawdling husband many a time, so it held a special resonance for me.??‍♀️?

Having purchased a replacement broom the assistant enquired "how will you get it home?" Husband replied no problem she will ride it home!

DH ‘found’ a witch’s broom on a job that he was on and brought it home for me.
I was going to do something with it, but haven’t.
Now that Halloween is around the corner, I’ve got a good excuse to get in from out of the shed and do something with it.
The original plan was to put a toy black cat on it ?‍⬛
So thank you for reminding me

I was once given a book of spell weaving along with flowers for my birthday by someone I was going out with He said he saw it in a book shop and said it just seemed to suit me. Many have said that they have often thought I was a witch. One wise person said he thought I was a hedge witch. Maybe I am....who knows. I have four spell books now but have never used any of them...maybe I should...grin

That is so funny. Bet your bad mood went straight away. Little children are brilliant. When yours are grown up you forget how good their observational comedy was.
