Untrained Staff in shops

Yesterday I went into three different shops and needed to ask some questions to the sales staff, in each shop, with regard to product details about some things I wished to purchase. In two shops the answer I got was 'I don't know" and in the third shop the response was 'I feel as if I should know but I don't'. None of them went off to ask someone who might know. Am I being unreasonable to think that the shop assistants should have some product knowledge?

I did a few months for a supermarket call center answering queries about products, so had to look up the product details, there is no way checkout staff could possibly know in depth details on hundreds of products.
It’s better to say you don’t know, possibly loosing a sale than mislead the customer

It was years ago now, but a niece visiting from the US used to have a severe egg allergy. (She’s grown out of it now,).

My sister asked at Asda customer services for a list of all the products containing egg, and TBH I was impressed when they produced one, no problem.
There is egg in so many things you might not suspect, including some sausages.

that's why allergen labelling is so important, and recently extended to items produced in store.

It's more down to training than the individuals. If there is no training and motivation to know about what you sell then the individuals would know no different.
I'd be inclined to write an email to the first two shops and say product knowledge and customer service skills are lacking, can you train the staff please, which in turn will higher your sales.
