I would be so grateful for any suggestions on how i can wash my hair whilst my foot is in a cast? I cannot put any weight on my foot so cannot have shower.

I have had my foot/ankle in a cast twice. My solution was to sit in the shower tray with foot outside of the shower protected by plastic bin bag and towel. Then I could wash body and hair easily.

Head over the bath when I had plaster and hang on to the bath edge for grim death.

GrannyGravy 13 that's a great idea if you can get down and up by yourself or have someone who can help you get down and up.

When I was looking after my mom I brought on of those hair tray things that let you wash someone's hair in the sink. Waste of money didn't work. So I used to sit her on the side of the bed and just use and wet flannel with clear water. As she didn't go anywhere worked a treat .

I had the same problem when I had jaundice because my door to the shower was the wrong way round couldn't have a shower chair . I was to wobbly to hold on to the rail in my shower to go in. I live on my own. So didn't wash my hair for 6 weeks. Until I was stable enough to stand without wobbling. Must admit I felt as if my hair must smell but it didn't.

What I should have done was use dry shampoo once a week. But it wasn't until years afterwards I realised what I should have done.

So I would try dry shampoo. I had a chair by the sink and gave myself a flannel wash everyday. Not the same as a shower but I was clean.

Do you have any assistance?

Soak hair at the sink then lather it. Could you not lean over the sink, balancing with one arm on the sink and pour or sponge water over head to rinse.

Put a chair or stool in the shower, if there's room, and tape a plastic bag over your cast.
Then keep your cast outside the showers way if possible.

My cast was just below my knee and I did it by kneeling on my other knee at the side of the bath using the shower attachment.

Drench no rinse shampoo caps are good. They are not dry shampoo, but water-based, and contain shampoo and conditioner. You can use them cold or warm them in the microwave. You put on the showercap and rub it for five minutes, then towel it dry if it needs it.. Amazon sell packs of 5 for £19.99. Not cheap, but they are easy to use and leave your hair clean and smelling nice.

Rather than risk injury in the shower, try a shampoo cap. The hair is thoroughly cleansed and looks and feels clean. I've used them on many patients.

You can get shower stools for this purpose off Amazon. I got one for £20.00 when l broke my ankle. I also got something called a LimbO, it pulls over the broken limb and that way it can stay in the shower and it stays dry.

You can buy a waterproof cover for your cast on line can’t remember the name of the company .but it works a treat in the bath or shower

Daisytwoshoes Thu 04-Nov-21 13:36:05

Try Cast protectors uk
Amazon
Boots
Hope this helps

Why not leave it? After a few days it will start to look ok.

Fennel Thu 04-Nov-21 17:21:28

Whatever method you choose be careful of your choice of shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
I'm currently suffering from an allergic reaction on my head and parts of my face from not rinsing properly.
At least I hope it's only that - seeing the doctor again tomorrow.

I’d never heard of these so have looked them up, they do seem like a brilliant idea! I often use dry shampoo if my hair looks a bit greasy but these caps look better. I might pop into Boots and get one to keep in my hospital bag, along with everything else I think might be useful in hospital.

I packed a bag after some comments on here about emergency admissions for single people, I don’t want friends having to root through my drawers hunting for things! The only problem is I keep in thinking of more things to put in it and the bag is getting bigger and bigger, it’s now more like a weekend hold-all!

But it’s peace of mind, especially after I was diagnosed as having had a TIA a couple of months ago. I had no idea I’d had one but it brought to home how close I was to a stroke and possible hospital stay. My daughter now knows where my bag is kept.

How about treating yourself to a weekly do at the hairdresser. Even if only for the shampoo at the backwash.

Fennel Thu 04-Nov-21 19:02:13

Good idea, Polly

Thank you ladies you have given me so many useful ideas and I really appreciate it x

I second the Drench shower caps - used them for a few days when I first broke my hip. You can also buy protective covers for your cast which will allow you to sit in the shower. They’re called Limbos and come in suitable sizes for all.

Yes, a shower stool and you can also buy a waterproof cover for the cast.
I was lent one, thankfully.

It was similar to the one in Katek's link

When I fractured my ankle and was in plaster I bought a waterproof cover which really worked- available on line. I used to manoeuvre myself into Bath by sitting on a stool by the side of it and sliding in only putting weight on good leg. I had a shower hose on the taps so could wash my hair in the bath. It does require a bit of upper body strength so maybe not possible if bit frail.
