How do you know if it’s Omicron?

Sorry for another Covid thread, and also apologies if this is has already been asked (haven’t got time to read through all the threads)
Also, apologies if it’s a stupid question.
But how does one know if they have the Omicron variant?
My stepson, DD1 and DSIL have all had positive PCR’s this week but that’s all the information they have.

I guess it doesn’t really matter, and I guess those testing know so that they can collect the data.

Are those with the Omicron variant told?

It seems to be more like a cold I've heard so different to Delta.

Being as it's the time of year for coughs and colds it would be difficult to differentiate.

This is a problem as unless people take tests they will just carry on with a cold as usual and infect others.
It would be good news if it does turn out to be no worse than a cold for most people.

If they've had a +ve PCR then they have Covid. I don't think it really matters if it is Delta, Omnicron or any other variant.

Yes they have all had positive PCR’s and are isolating.

I just wondered if anyone gets told which variant it is, because there is obviously data collected relating to it.

I know it doesn’t really matter but was just interested to know if anyone got told which variant they have confused

A percentage of positive PCRs are sequenced to identify the strain/variant of Covid.
