Someone remarked yesterday that the names currently in vogue are those associated with our grandparents era.

My grandparents were Hilary and Giles and Doris and Bernard. It's a long time since I've heard any of those names being used.

What we're your grandparents called?

Hellen, Andy, Edward, Elizabeth.

Paul and Grace, Sydney and Phyllis. Certainly haven’t heard the last pair lately.

Maggie & Tommy ?

Robert and Lillian were my paternal grandparents, and my maternal ones were William and Elizabeth. However, it’s a family tradition for many on my mother’s side of the family to use their second names, so the latter were known as Andrew and Ann.

William is still very popular and Lillian seems to be coming creeping back too.

Emily and Laurence
Rose Anne and Gilbert

Emily has certainly come back into fashion. Not the others.

Can only remember my grandmothers names and they were Violet and Thirza…

I don’t know three of mine, paternal grandma Ida.

No idea. We never met them and our parents never told us their names.

Jane, Harry, Charles and Elspeth (Elsie). The Jane came from way back when and we still use it, mostly as a middle name.

My paternal birth grandparents died when my dad was four so I never knew them but their names were Catherine and William. His foster parents were called Elizabeth and James. My maternal grandparents were Alexander and Wilhelmina.

Anne and John
Florence and Harold
I have happy memories of 3 of them. Harold died before I was born.

I’m quite surprised that there are people who don’t know the names of their grandparents and wonder if you’re not curious about them?

I initially became interested in family history because of difficulties within my own childhood; I wanted to discover more about the families my own parents had come from. I only met my paternal grandparents a few times and didn’t know their names until after they’d died.

Lily has been hugely popular in recent years.

Love post from # Grandmabatty:- Wilhelmina ! I hope that name makes a comeback. My granddaughter is called Lilliana Jean (Italian version of Lillian I believe). When I took her to the cemetery last year she was thrilled to read her great grandmothers name - Jean Lillian !

Bignanny2 Sun 17-Apr-22 11:22:36

I had a Great Auntie Hilda - never hear that name these days !

Grandmabatty Sun 17-Apr-22 11:22:54

Bignanny it's a family name. I had an aunt called Mina and have a cousin called Wilma, all from Wilhelmina.

Amalie Martha and Adolphus
Alice and George

All (apart from Afolphus!) used to this day.

Only met Alice. Amalie and Adolphus trapped behind the Iron curtain and George died before I was born.

Mine were Reginald and Mary -very strict grandparents but I loved them
Jim and Florence (Florrie) relaxed grandparents equally beloved
I admit I love the name Florence

Adela and George, Elizabeth and James.

So, all except Adela still popular.

My daughter was surprised, a while ago, when I mentioned that names like Emily and Harriet sound old-fashioned to me.

Phoebe and Arthur - she absolutely hated Phoebe, often used her middle name of May.
I’m sure she’d have been astonished to learn how popular Phoebe became fairly recently - all down IMO to Friends.

The others were Rose and Harold.
Rose lives on as a Gdd’s middle name - IMO it’s lovely.

Mabel Agnes and William Charles on my Mum's side.
Sophia Elizabeth and Frederick George on my Dad's side.

Think it's time poor Grandma Mabel's names had a revival!
All the others are reasonably popular these days in one form or other.

My maternal gp's were Lizzie and Hugh. Paternal gp's were Alice and Alfred. 3 of my granddaughters are Hattie, Esme and Lillia. So definitely based on our grandparents era.
