When I had a look at Mumsnet a few minutes ago, there were 50+ threads shut down because of a troll/s. I really don’t understand why anybody wants to behave in that manner, what sad lives they must lead.
I sincerely hope they don’t target Gransnet next.

Pathetic individuals with probably an average age of 14 and a mental age of 5 .

BlueBelle Tue 13-Sep-22 04:29:13

Well we ve had two or three on here this last week and had threads shut down
I think the more it’s talked about the more they ll try it’s an attention think ‘I can fool them and get them all going’
Just be vigilant
I don’t believe they are all young kids though

BlueBalou Tue 13-Sep-22 07:14:59

I don’t think it’s bored kids either.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 13-Sep-22 11:07:58

You’re right BlueBelle. One banned poster in particular has been creating troll accounts on GN during the last few weeks.

Teens have much more interesting things to do online than troll threads.

I think there is a regular poster on here that likes to start controversial threads, especially on a Sunday, and has more than one account.

Totally agree they post when GNHQ are not monitoring of a week-end and Bank Holidays.Shame they have nothing better to do I don't think they are youngsters either.

You seem certain about a “banned poster in particular” GSM. How do you know? This isn’t the first time you’ve asserted this.

FannyCornforth Tue 13-Sep-22 12:22:51

Delila if you spend a lot of time on a site and pay particular attention to particular things, it becomes very easy to spot if your mind works a certain way.

M0nica Tue 13-Sep-22 12:23:29

I am in awe of those who can recognise patterns of postings on GN.

I mean that. Beyond recognising that there are certain posters who start and/or always contribute to political posts. I never recognise any patterns at all.

That's a lot of 'ifs', FannyC.

Like MOnica, I wouldn't have a clue.

Delila Tue 13-Sep-22 12:27:28

FannyCornforth, that’s a lot of “ifs”. However, there seem to be no “ifs” in GSM’s repeated assertion.

I used to be a member of a forum for supporters of my football club. There was a group of fans on there who openly boasted of trolling the Daily Mail's website in particular and competed among themselves to see whose comments could attract the most red arrows from outraged readers. These were grown men. Keyboard warriors with nothing better to do.

MaizieD Tue 13-Sep-22 12:29:56

P.S In one of my recent brief forays from N & P onto other threads I noticed one poor poster being roundly accused of being another, banned, poster and the accusation was completely wrong. Certainly some minds work 'a certain way' and it isn't pleasant.

FannyCornforth Tue 13-Sep-22 12:30:27

I’m just explaining that I’m good at spotting oddities!
If I told you, I would have to kill you!
It’s no big deal, don’t read so much into it.
And please don’t ask if I work for Gransnet…

Oh right.
Well, that’s nowt to do with me.
Forget I said anything

In a way I miss these. Pity, because no-one dare mention them now but they could be this winter's essential garment. Even JL are selling them:

I’d be sweating like a piggy in one of those!

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 13-Sep-22 12:51:24

I do know for sure Delila but I’m not at liberty to tell you here how it is that I know.

I’m also pretty good at spotting linguistic patterns and traits. Some people’s are particularly distinctive. No ifs.

A lot of old threads are being revived by scammers or posters trying to sell us something lately.

I'm not trying to sell you one of those garments, FannyC and I'm not going to buy one either, too much of a struggle when you need to go!

FannyCornforth Tue 13-Sep-22 12:56:47

Shep I was just trying to explain that it’s not some sort of voodoo, or even worse, insider knowledge shock

Totally agree. Years of managing social media accounts for work have taught me how to spot a troll at 20 paces.

nanna8 Tue 13-Sep-22 13:05:48

Just wondering why people actually change their names on here. Unless they were previously banned, I really can’t see the point because it is bloomin’ obvious anyway. I suppose maybe they have taken a dislike to their own name but that seems a bit weird.

Blondiescot are you able to share any tips on how to spot trolls? I’ve gone as far as checking if that username has ever posted before, and how over the top a thread opener is, in which case I don’t reply, but I’d like any further tips - none of us like being taken for a ride.
