Baftas

Because they are IMPORTANT and therefore entitled to tell everyone else how IMPORTANT they are and therefore of significance to the rest of us silly people who watch the Baftas!!!

Hate it when celebrities get political. Just act or sing or play footie as that’s what you are paid to do and don’t bore us with your views on Brexit or parenting or climate change.

Oh but people actually listen to celebrities or royals apparentlyMycatisahacker just goes to show how dunbed down the general public is when someone like Joanna Lumley is seen as an expert opinion on politics ..

paddyann, the problem is that the 'dumbed down' public are influenced by what these people say and vote accordingly. During the Brexit campaign, celebs were stating how they were going to vote and urged their fans to do the same.....and the idiots did!

I didn't like the film The Favourite ar all. I'm amazed it earned all those awards.

Didn't watch it, have no idea who or what won what! Just don't like award programmes. I watched some catch up tv instead.

It was boring, come back Stephen Fry.

Bohemian should have got more awards. If I want politics I will watch a political debate. But I o agree it was a bit boring, I hadn’t even heard of Roma and some of the dresses?!

I watched some of it and found it as boring as ever. I would have liked Bohemian Rhapsody to have been nominated for Best Film but at least the actor who played Freddie did get the Best Actor award and his speech was concise and appropriate.
Award for the silliest dress - well, that's a hard one, but I wondered if Rachel Weiss was wearing that frothy confection for a bet. I can't think of any other possible reason.

I am a big film fan and go very regularly to warch films. I am interested to know who wins awards but not in the ceremony itself.
Celebteties are as entitled to express their opinions publicly as,anybody else. We all do on GN. I bet if we agreed with the views we would be less irritated.

The BAFTAS are not just about the actors, Most of the awards are for industry professionals - Cinematographers, musicians, producers, directors, costume designers, lighting experts, animators, etc. Indeed the Fellowship this year went to a film Editor. It is the BBC who think we, the public, are only interested in the STARS. Within the film industry the actors are mainly regarded as the Hired Help, while the Film Crew and Production Department are the real Industry Professionals. If you watch the credits at the end of a film to the end you will notice that the Cast list is very small as compared to the list of the team, who make up the bulk of the multi million, well paid jobs supporting, export earning industry.

The British Film and TV Industry, will be severely affected by Brexit and has as much right as any other industry to voice their concerns.

I've got tv on this morning and can hear snippets of the speeches.
All I can say is I'm glad I never watched it.

Granny23 you are spot on. The awards go way beyond the actors! I have 2 very good friend who have BAFTA awards.. for work in TV.

Was I wrong? I thought the programmes was live but I turned over to watch the news half way through to find ITV reporting who won what!

I don't have a problem with celebrities having an opinion in an interview or on their own Twitter account.I do hate it when they use an awards ceremony to lecture us on their politics or causes.Do the job of presenting in an unbiased ,professional way .Make introductions snappy and acceptance speeches concise.

I guess Brexit will have a detrimental effect on the film industry [a lot of films at indie cinemas seem to be part EU funded]. Ditto musicians etc. So they have a right to voice their opinions. Any way it slightly counteracts the pro Brexit abomination that is Question Time.

mumofmadboys I also was amazed that The Favourite scooped so many awards. Didn't enjoy it at all.
