I have to go shopping this morning and i am feeling scared. Sounds so stupid i know but my tummy is in knots at the thought. Anyone else feel the same. I also feel like i am breaking a rule about going out, bit like when at school and you did something wrong. Am i over reacting????

gillybob Thu 02-Apr-20 08:33:34

No you’re not overreacting. I was shaking like a jelly going round Asda yesterday travelsafar . They had the floor marked out in a one way system and a few nasty people were making sure everyone knew if anyone dared to go the wrong way. That and I was sure my Card would be refused . Glad to get out .

Best take a list with you . Take care and good luck. x

God knows what all this will do to those of us with health anxiety, OCD, agoraphobia, apart from reinforcing the idea that our weird behaviour was indeed right!

FarNorth Thu 02-Apr-20 08:44:35

The whole situation is scary.

Chewbacca Thu 02-Apr-20 08:50:55

I know what you mean travelsafar, I also feel as though I'm breaking some rules, even when I'm just having my daily walk and I'm observing social distancing very carefully. I went for my weekly shop on Tuesday and, as the supermarket is well beyond walking distance, I had to go by car and I was worried that I'd be stopped by the police and asked to explain myself.
So many things that we've taken for granted all our lives and it's only now we can recognise them for what they were; privileges and freedom.

BlueBelle Thu 02-Apr-20 09:00:26

Yes you are overreacting travelsofar but it is totally understandable
I think we have to get this in proportion so although I m not going out apart from a short walk I think we have to remember that most people haven’t got it, a high proportion have had it and recovered and another high proportion of people dying from Covid may have it but actually died from something else but will still go down in statistics as a Covid number For example my friends husband was taken into hospital with a massive stroke and expected to die any day he also tested positive but he won’t have died from Covid, a similar situation a young gentleman in his late 50s dies while testing positive but he dies from a massive aneurysm which could have happened at any moment without having the virus

So no I m not shaking with fear I m downhearted from the seclusion and I d love to go to the shop ( my family have forbidden me ?) Dont over egg the fear travelsofar unfortunately we are in total overkill with so much information coming into our heads minute by minute TV, Radio, letters, warnings, numbers, statistics it all sounds so dire

So much fear depletes our immune system

Sweden haven’t changed their life style, no lock downs who knows who s right

Same feelings as expressed here. Went to Sainsbury's 'oldies' hour yesterday, have to take car as it about three miles away. Silly thing is that bus there stops outside my flats and all of them are running with no passengers, but I felt that I should not take one of those.
Drove home long way round, to give my car a bit of a run out. Felt guilty every time I saw a police car,.
Go out most days for about 30 mins on my mobility scooter to local park, see few other people, but - again, when I do see a policeman, I get flustered. I am not doing anything wrong - and those police are always lovely and smile at me and wish me Good Morning/Afternoon, etc.
At park on some days I arrange to meet with my daughter who takes her youngest there to have a run around. We stay well away from each other, but it is good for me to have someone to have a chat with for 15 minutes, Few other people use the park so nobody is at all near anyone else.
I am not in any way any sort of Hypochondriac, but do now have concerns as to how I would be able to access medical advice and care if I did need it for other things other than CV19.

SalsaQueen Thu 02-Apr-20 09:23:57

I'm not particularly scared at the moment. I'm almost 61, in good health, and taking all the precautions I can.

JenniferEccles Thu 02-Apr-20 09:55:42

BlueBell sums up my feelings.

The tv news is giving us a daily tally of the deaths, so it is understandable that we feel horrified and apprehensive when we are out but, as BB said, the majority of the deaths were from illnesses other than Covid yet the virus is listed as the cause of death.

In contrast I understand Germany lists the underlying illness not Covid on death certificates therefore their numbers will be more accurate.

I am encouraged to read that the numbers of new cases in both Spain and Italy have been slowing. We are told we are about 3 weeks behind them.

Toadinthehole Thu 02-Apr-20 10:01:46

Yes, I get anxious too. I’m finding I can’t focus on what I want, and planning future meals, because I’m constantly watching to see where everyone else is!

Eglantine21 Thu 02-Apr-20 10:03:49

Franbern please don’t worry about accessing medical help. The emergency services and hospitals are still functioning and will meet acute needs.

It just that everything that can wait has been put on the back burner.

Grandma70s Thu 02-Apr-20 10:08:26

I feel generally scared, just about the way life is shaken and changed. I feel scared for my children and grandchildren in London.

My attitude has always been that providing it’s me and not the children, then illness is unimportant. I’m 80, and not scared for myself. If I get it, I get it. I have no responsibilities, so there would be no disastrous consequences.

Franbern Thu 02-Apr-20 10:12:59

Bluebell, I do agree with you. Think there is a a quite deliberate policy of causing panic at the moment. Idea is to make everyone so very scared of everyone else, they may be more willing to obey the new rules.
Far too much news on this - of course, it is dominating our lives at present, but there are other things going on. Do think that news items on CV19 should be much more restricted and it would also be good if it included the figures of 98% recovery rate. Yes, I know people with underlying serious illness are very much more at risk, but other, healthy people it needs to be stated quite clearly that we ARE NOT ALL GOING TO DIE!!
Not sure how long people will be willing to follow these very stringent rules - human beings are social animals, the longer it all lasts, they more chance there is of that a lot of people will start disobeying the social distancing rules.
Mental Health is and will continue to break down alarmingly in this current social isolation - not sure what sort of society we are going to have at the end of it. Financially, it is going to mean such austere policies probably for at least a decade. So many people will have lost their jobs or small business's. How long will it be to get rid of this suspicion of coming close to strangers? How high will suicide and self-harming rates soar?
Yes,.....I am scared.......very scared of how life as we knew it, is not likely to return for such a very long time (definitely not in my lifetime).

Purplepixie Thu 02-Apr-20 10:23:24

It is certainly understandable when the news is telling us just how many has died and now it is affecting younger people as well. DH says we have to put it into proportion as more people die from flu and nothing is mentioned about that per year. I am trying to stay positive but I miss my children and grand children even though we speak on the phone and WhatsApp etc. These are scary times that we have never been through before and hopefully don’t have to face again. Stay safe and keep washing your hands as we are told and we will get through this. Put some positive music on and have a dance around. X

GrannyGravy13 Thu 02-Apr-20 10:38:18

Mr.GG had heard from a family member that Aldi was deserted 30 minutes ago, so he has gone with a list. I worry for him, and I worry that he will bring this flipping virus into our home (we have DD, GC and new baby isolating with us).

I am asthmatic and every so often I just feel overwhelmed with a fear that if I was to get really poorly I would not be intubated and I am not ready to leave my family yet!!!!

NfkDumpling Thu 02-Apr-20 10:50:27

We are supposed to be screening as DH takes medicine which lowers his immunity. He’s on The List and had the letter - which was very scary. The only way for me to stay in the same house is to isolate with him.

However, yesterday we were getting really low on milk. All our friends are either in the high risk category or too far away. Ditto offspring. No deliveries available. So I braved a trip to Tesco. It was so quiet with the few people in their drifting around each other, maintaining the distance, as in a slow motion dance. When I got home I felt obliged to wipe down everything I’d bought (I did, of course, not just buy milk) and felt guilty for not washing all my clothes.

We really need to go to check on our little boat as the yard is closed. We’re very unlikely to see anyone. But it will mean a car ride, which apparently is a no-no.

I’m beginning to feel more scared of the controls in place than the prospect of catching the virus.

Froglady Thu 02-Apr-20 10:51:49

I'm not scared about getting the virus, as I'm doing all I can to stay safe; what I'm scared about is what state the country and the world is going to be in when it ends?!

Hellsbelles Thu 02-Apr-20 10:56:23

I live in a reasonably remote area ( Cumbria) but am saddened that we are up there in the stats for having lots of cases. I heard through 2 friends yesterday that our local vicars husband died of it , our u3a president , and a lady has lost both her parents in days of each other. It brings it home just how close it all is.

Guineagirl Thu 02-Apr-20 11:01:20

Travelsafar aww wish I could give you a hug. I had to go out seem to have no fresh stuff in now, as I have Morrison’s behind me before this I used to use it like a corner shop a few times a week for fish etc. Today I had the runs and felt so I’ll. I felt ill in the shop too like I shouldn’t be there. I do hope this doesn’t cause acrophobia for me or anyone. So no, I’m happy you posted this thread x

LynneH Thu 02-Apr-20 11:01:49

You’d be mad if you weren’t scared. Take a deep breath, keep calm and carry on. Remember, bravery isn’t not being scared; it’s feeling the fear and doing it anyway

Marjgran Thu 02-Apr-20 11:03:35

Sweden deaths going rapidly up. Yes I am scared - it isn’t the fear of death so much (and Doctor friends say that the ongoing damage to the lungs may make surviving and living pretty painful) but that our lives are so wrecked. And the reason for the panic is not the deaths but the swamping, world wide, of medical facilities with those who need treatment so that other treatments can not happen. My brain MRI is postponed, so is the review of nerve damaged during an operation, a friend’s kidney transplant has been indefinitely postponed (she has a living donor) and her kidney function is near critical. My friend’s hip replacement indefinitely postponed, and another dodgy mole can’t be seen by dermatology. My daughter is sick in bed with moderate Covid symptoms so her little children are isolated from her and husband cannot work. And in India there is the biggest movement of people on the move since Partition, people rushing to the countryside because there is not enough shelter and food in the cities. What deaths there are, are on top of existing mortality, seen the body bags in USA? And yes, in fact some people won’t die because the measures to control the virus lessens pollution, and traffic so fewer accidents etc etc. A small silver lining to a very dark cloud.

If anyone else says we are getting things out of proportion I will scream (not that the miscreant will hear me). angry

Guineagirl Thu 02-Apr-20 11:04:17

I try to not watch much tv, if I can get food and exercise and steer clear of too many updates I have noticed I feel better. I try to also think of the population amount in UK to the percentage affected, well it works for me a bit. I think also, what’s making it worse for me is very nosy neighbours who seem to exploit the term once a day but would pick up on what I am doing wrongly.

inishowen Thu 02-Apr-20 11:05:39

I find shopping horrible just now. I dont feel like going alone so insist DH comes too. I've heard they may stop couples from shopping. When we get home I unpack the bags then leave them in the car so any germs will die over time. Then wipe down the door handles we've touched, then finally wash hands thoroughly. I'm going to throw our coats in the washing machine today as we wear them to the shops.

Neilspurgeon0 Thu 02-Apr-20 11:06:07

It is definitely scary and I am very far from a worrier, this is probably the worst threat I have lived through and I spent thirty years in the RN with service in NI, The Falklands, Lebanon and the Cod wars. This is definitely NOT something to take lightly. Obey the rules and, if at all possible, as we say in the Navy, “batten down for heavy weather ahead”

knspol Thu 02-Apr-20 11:09:22

I'm worried because it seems the govt don't know what they're doing regarding testing and protective equipment. It's alright to say one thing but the reality reports in the newspapers tell a completely different story and we're still allowing planes from places with high incidence of Covid-19 to land here. We're all doing our bit and self isolating why can't we rely on the govt to do their job effectively.
