Protective gloves when shopping

What is your opinion?

Lots of people seem to be wearing them when out and about but it seems pointless to me.

I don’t wear them.

I don’t eat or drink anything when out shopping, and wash my hands really well when I get home.

Wore a mask this morning for the first time when I did my supermarket shop, it kept riding up so don’t know how you are not meant to touch it, as I had to adjust it now and again. Certainly added nothing to the shopping experience, it won’t encourage me to shop any more than I need to.

There seems to be no point in wearing disposable gloves when out shopping. Most people are still going to transfer any virus or bacteria to their hands when taking them off.
As a nurse, I knew the proper technique for removing gloves safely, but still washed my hands afterwards.
Also, if people are wearing a face mask, there will be the urge/temptation to adjust it, so they will still be transferring whatever is on the gloves to their faces.
Personally, I wouldn't bother. Just wash hands thoroughly when back at home.

I wear plastic gloves while shopping. I put them on in the car and once I have finished shopping I wipe them with an antiseptic wipe, remove them before opening the car door. Once in the car I put them in a plastic bag, wipe my hands again with the antiseptic wipe which goes into the plastic bag.

I am something of a people watcher and have noticed people are unconsciously touching their faces or adjusting their masks if they are wearing them, picking up items and then putting them back

I will continue to wear gloves as it makes me feel safer

I've got a pair of thinnish blue Marigolds which don't look out of place against the blue surgical gloves. Easy to wash and thin enough to grasp things without the flimsiness of those see-through ones which aren't serviceable enough for shopping. They also cover the whole of the wrist as well, no gaps.

It's the outer clothes that bother me most. I'd even wear a thin plastic raincoat if I could get away with it. Again, easily washed.

Which works out cheaper...disposable gloves or hand sanitiser?

kittylester Thu 16-Jul-20 11:10:15

But, disposable gloves are just skin when they are on. confused

Exactly kitty!

I read that it is safer for everyone if we do not wear gloves but regularly use sanitiser.
As I haven't been in a shop for about four months, I'm not worrying about it too much at the moment!

I wear white cotton gloves place them on when entering shop, remove when leaving and sanitise hands. Wash gloves in bleach after each wear I have a few pairs also find they act as reminder not to touch my face.

Charleygirl5 Thu 16-Jul-20 11:54:50

I do not see the point myself. Like others I wash my hands when I return home after a supermarket shop.

MerylStreep Thu 16-Jul-20 12:01:20

Everything that * Charleygirl* said.

dizzyblonde Thu 16-Jul-20 13:31:54

Gloves do not protect you from anything that washed hands won’t but if it makes you feel better I’m not worried, even more so now masks will stop you touching your face. Just so long as no one starts campaigning for them to be compulsory.

SueDonim Thu 16-Jul-20 13:33:41

They’re pointless, imo. I did wear them to begin with but soon realised that anything I may have got on my hands would also have got onto the gloves anyway. I think it’s better to wash/sanitise your hands whenever you need to.

annodomini Thu 16-Jul-20 14:05:52

I use the shops' sanitisers on entering and leaving. Then use my own when I get back in the car. Sanitise or wash my hands when I get home. I wear my rubber gloves when I'm disinfecting my shopping. Then I sanitise the gloves as well!

annodomini Thu 16-Jul-20 14:07:08

By 'rubber gloves' I mean my 'Marigolds', not latex surgical gloves.

BlueBelle Thu 16-Jul-20 14:51:29

No point, they cause more trouble than without, if there are any traces of virus then you are just spreading it around
Are people sill disinfecting their shopping I ve never felt that was a necessity at all

My friend wore them at the beginning of this outbreak and said she scratched an itch on her face without thinking.

Someone who served me today put on gloves to handle the money. They didn't have a contactless till.

maddyone Thu 16-Jul-20 16:04:48

I don’t wear them. I use my alcohol gel when I go in and when I come out of a shop. We clean the shopping when it arrives via Click and Collect and also anything we bring in ourselves from the shops.

Greeneyedgirl Thu 16-Jul-20 16:12:43

I did start using disposable gloves then decided it was wasteful, and didn’t actually make sense if you use alcohol gel before and after shopping.

No end of people fiddle with masks when they have them on, even in medical settings I’ve noticed.

Teetime Thu 16-Jul-20 16:15:36

Gloves make more of a problem transferring bacteria from surface to surface and many shops are now asking people NOT to wear them. People dont seem to realise you still need to wash your hands not just sanitise when you take them off as they will be full of sweat, your own bacteria and skin scales aka 'glove juice'.

kittylester Thu 16-Jul-20 17:01:12

That image won't leave my brain now Teetime!

We went to Bath last week. A very elderly lady was in a real dither. She was wearing a heavy coat, a mask, yellow marigolds and a rain hat with a scratched plastic shield on front. She couldn't see a thing, no wonder she was confused.

I wore my mask as a practice today and wasn't too bothered by it. Mine are pink, not a colour I buy generally , but all they had in Boots. Nice and soft and washable......onwards and upwards.

Sussexborn Thu 16-Jul-20 17:15:08

Have bought some masks but haven’t used one yet. I’ve been wearing a scarf that I’ve pulled up whilst queueing or inside the shop.

Don’t understand why so many people leave their nose uncovered!
