Here we are again once more! Thank you all for your concern; I didn’t spot your messages until I was closing shop at 1.00am this morning.
Yes, I’m quite well, although I did feel I was losing the zest for living after all that nonsense recently regarding female only threads, which thankfully appears to have been removed, but not before it achieved its intended result.
Now practically all the Grandads have absconded, despite the enticements and welcomes offered to MALES for the ladies to “banter with” (excuse my poor grammar!) hmm
Anyway, now that “Jokes: the telling of”, has been banned on Gransnet , I’ve been concentrating on doing Good Deeds on other threads, namely showing how Aussies have achieved excellent anti-Covid results. Whether they are heeded remains to be seen.
Though we are not chickens, we are now free range, free to roam over practically all of “our golden soil” , now that the two lady Premiers of Queensland and NSW have stopped bickering and allowed interstate travel. Even WA will open up very soon.
VIC. Premier,Dan, has not always been “flavour of the month(s)”, but at least his resolve to stick with his tough decisions has produced an excellent result; of course with the willing help of we citizens and the threat of hefty fines for non-observance of the Rules.
Naturally there are Covidiots, but what’s new?
VIC has now gone 35 days without anything.

Jane Thanks for the offer of Arbroath Smokies, but after discussions with our Border Security people you are to be reminded that we prohibit the entry of potentially hazadous foodstuffs; this of course also applies to haggis!
We notice from elsewhere that you are fond of hedgehogs, so we feel sure that you will be only too happy to share your Smokies. Our preference is for the Fleetwood variety!
A word of warning! before leaping on to your sun-lounger one of your fine days make sure he hasn’t beaten you to it ; multiple puncture wounds in that area would not be a pretty sight. Even your best friends would recoil, unless they are Level 3 Wound nurses who have sworn the Hippocratic Oath not to desert you in your hour of need.
And I’m sure you are still young enough to leap off with alacrity before squashing the poor fellow.

Lucca Hope your Sydneysider Son and family suffered no harm in last evening’s storms. The lightning looked fantastic as shown on TV News this morning, although the extensive power cuts caused by falling trees wouldn’t have pleased everyone
We rarely get that sort of excitement down here in Melb.

Megs Welcome “Buddy”! I unearthed that citation promoting you to “Ally” whilst I was moping aound. I’m afraid your remuneration remains unchanged. sad
No doghouse! yet. Might be “hedgehog box”! Jane may be already hammering away..on a super-size house.

That reminds me; TV tomorrow will be showing “Blood of the Clans”; Neil Oliver is involved somehow. He’s good. Now who do I barrack for? Should be plenty of “Hoots Mon” and other indecipherable exclamations, even captions, unless of course, it was made in Scotland! grin

The News
TV News again last evening showed passengers, from about 25 flights being greeted at Brisbane and Sydney airports; lots of hugs and kisses! More regular daily flights to come.
Again; not chickens, but our wings are still clipped regarding overseas flights.

If one good thing has resulted from this pandemic it is that there is a much stronger feeling of community responsibility. in that the attitude ” I’m alright Jack, I’m fireproof” cannot be sustained. There is more awareness that other citizens can also be affected by one’s decisions, especially the frail and elderly.
Long may it continue!

PS Joke warning! Read no further if you are prone to get prickly!
“Oh dear! We can all make mistakes” muttered the short-sighted hedgehog as he clambered off the hairbrush!

Good Health wine wine wine

Glad to see you are ok Rufus we thought you d done a bunk and carry on joking keep your spirits up ?

Jaxjacky Wed 02-Dec-20 08:46:16

Hi Rufus, you were missed, pleased your area is still ‘clean’. Vaccine news here this morning with big hopes for the future, people still need to behave for some time yet though.
The calendar doesn’t change though, day two of my Advent calendar will be opened later, no chocolate as I don’t like it. Real tree being delivered on Friday, it won’t go up until about the 12th so it lasts the duration and the weather is winter chilly too.
Stay safe ?

Jane10 Wed 02-Dec-20 09:49:06

Hi Rufus2 glad to hear you're OK. Things sound pretty good in Oz. Actually, they always sounded pretty good to me. I've been twice and really like it. The atmosphere, weather and the places I went were great. If I'd been younger I'd have seriously considered it.
Snow forecast for here tonight and tomorrow. Winter has somehow sneaked up on us. Luckily I have my winter emergency supply of sausage rolls (the food of the gods) in the freezer. Any excuse though!
Oh well. Offski now. I might even get dressed!

G'day Rufus

Glad you're back and OK but please remember to avoid referring to the female gender in disparaging ways - eg

"now that the two lady Premiers of Queensland and NSW have stopped bickering and allowed interstate travel".

Why is their gender relevant? Mentioning it could imply that they have been bickering because they are both female.

This could annoy a lot of female Gransnetters and I'm sure you'd wish to avoid that.

Hello Rufus, great news from down under about Covid, shows how a bit of ‘follow the rules’ works. Today is last day of lockdown here, and I guess you’ve heard about the Tiers , I think there will be a fair amount of Tier jumping. because not many people seem to agree with the plans. Four households can meet at Christmas which may be restricting for some people,us included , for the first time in over 60 years we will have Christmas dinner on our own, I only hope Santa still calls ,we will social distance??.
Good to see you back, it’s quite amazing that so much is being monitored, anyway keep up the good work.
I sent a small parcel to NSW to grandson esterday, when Iasked the man in the post office the cheapest way he said don’t send it ?. Must say the postage cost a lot more than the contents!!!!

??????Cheers

MawBe Wed 02-Dec-20 11:34:58

Don’t want to rain on your Christmas parade Megs but it is three not four households

Families across the country will be able to form a temporary bubble and gather in three-household groups of any size over Christmas, the UK Government has announced.
The system of Christmas bubbles will be in place from 23 to 27 December and mean people will be able to see and hug their loved ones over the festive season.
It will operate in tandem with the three-tier system in England which replaces the month-long lockdown next week, as well as ongoing restrictions in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

no chocolate as I don’t like it
Jaxjacky You're kidding!? I'll play it safe and acknowledge that some people can't have chocolate for medical reasons, although when I was a lot younger Mam used to treat us to a choc, called Ex-Lax. Lovely flavour! We used to get quite moved.!
We had Cadburys on TV doco this evening and again, mind boggling number-crunching endless lines of chocs on production lines.
This weekly series about English maufacturers is also interesting when showing sales and marketing depts. developing new products using tasting panels. Even new packaging gets the going over from expert panels.
So there you go! Don't tell me me you're not thinking of smuggling a few bars into your allotment shed, assuming you've got a decent heater in there. Kick off those gum-boots, relax and enjoy!
Good Health.
We heard on News this morning your vaccine is "imminent'.
Good news. Be a change to see queues forming for jabs instead of testing!
Good Luck! smile

Mawbe, yes I know, realised afterwards, but thanks for correction .What a good job someone pays attention to posts. We have the Dept of Heath letter.

Rufus2 Wed 02-Dec-20 13:03:52

It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Maw It's also twice blessed! Hopefully!
But your comment is quite unnecessary and the sort that would put members off posting for fear of having teacher marking their messages. sad
Whether it's 3, 4, or 50 matters not a jot given the context of me being 12,000 milles away and also on my own.
Now I must away to correct another misunderstanding.

What absolute rubbish Rufus
It was a misleading statement about what is permitted in the U.K. this Christmas.
But your comment is quite unnecessary and the sort that would put members off posting for fear of having teacher marking their messages
Do you know I can do without your unrelenting nit picking and criticism every time I open my mouth.
Of course it matters more than a jot, but it clearly doesn’t apply to you.
It’s not all about you, though you know.
Other posters might have seen the “4 households” comment and wondered why they are only permitted three. Or felt able to plan for four .
False information is not particularly helpful so don’t be so scratchy or showy off with with your quote from Portia.
You would seem to clearly have very real hang ups with teachers hmmhmm

boheminan Wed 02-Dec-20 13:20:08

Hi Rufus2 (Ooer, what does the 2 stand for?). Welcome back. I don't often comment here but your posts make me chuckle, which is something we could all do with at the moment ('a chuckle a day keeps blues well at bay') so 'thank you'. I too have missed you over the last couple of days.

Jane10 Wed 02-Dec-20 13:21:59

Oh dear. Are you going to go on 'marking' people's posts? Once a teacher...
Och don't take umbrage MawB. Rufus is just being Rufus. He's not going to change.

Rufus2 Wed 02-Dec-20 13:23:58

Mentioning it could imply that they have been bickering because they are both female
Ramblingrose22 Please feel free to interpret it that way if that's how you're disposed, but as far as I'm concerned you're wrong!
It shows that 2 of our 6 State Premiers are females and we're not as chauvenistic as some older Poms still believe. Something to publicise, I think.
They were bickering (as reported in the media) over their delay in opening their mutual State border.for political reasons. hmm

I suppose I should make allowances Jane10 for his advanced years but it is unpleasant to know that grudges can be held for so long and that the sniper is ready should I dare to pop my head above the parapet.
What is this about teachers anyway? I know some men -particularly of an older generation- defined themselves by their occupation but I don’t think many of us women do.
I have been a proofreader, professional cook and caterer, translator and yes, for 20 years a teacher. Also a Mum, wife, dog owner, music lover and avid reader. Not much of a gardener though.
However any brush with education is clearly the mark of Cain. confusedconfused

Rufus2 Wed 02-Dec-20 13:39:22

Too right Jane Too late now!
As the saying goes, " You can lead a horse to water, but you can't change his spots.!

Btw; I'm surprised nobody has accused me of being demeaning to hedgehogs yet!
Are you OK about that? hmm

seacliff Wed 02-Dec-20 13:43:13

Good to see you back Rufus, a breath of fresh air. I have friends and family in Queensland, so have been hearing how much freedom you have there now. Very envious, and of your weather. They did the right thing, closing state borders and being so strict with enforcement. It has paid off.

Talking of chocolate, I love it. However much of the UK chocolate is not as good as a few years back, partly because companies, like Cadburys, have been bought by the US and ingredients and recipes have changed, I believe palm oil is now used. Mind you, when I tried buying UK brands of chocolate in Australia a few years ago, it didn't taste as good either.

Rufus2 Wed 02-Dec-20 14:03:31

Must say the postage cost a lot more than the contents!!!!
Megs Same here! We've regularly exchanged wall calendars with an ex-neighbour in Windsor; He likes to see sun, sandy beaches and blue sky at Christmas, whilst we can gaze at snow-drifts, but as you say, postage is cruel.
I've now had my 2021 from him for a month, posted October via sea-mail A £5 calendar cost him 2x1st Class and 2 2nd Class stamps.
Go figure! grin

Jaxjacky Wed 02-Dec-20 14:11:10

Rufus, nope, I don’t like chocolate, but I could sneak some onion bhaji up to the allotment and stuff my face!!

Jane10 Wed 02-Dec-20 15:18:24

MawB you're definitely not the most teachery teacher on GN.
Rufus2, however, is a definite one off!

MawBe Wed 02-Dec-20 15:19:42

Just come back after my film course and I wonder exactly what
you meant by this Jane10?

Oh dear. Are you going to go on 'marking' people's posts?^Once a teacher.

I found it quite insulting- as if pointing out misinformation was somehow akin to marking ?..
And as for “once a teacher” I don’t define myself by any of the careers I have had but I do have respect for accuracy.

Megs36 Wed 02-Dec-20 15:38:48

mawBe, I can only suggest commenting only on threads that agree with your thinking, most people seem to enjoyRufus’s newsy posts and take most things with a pinch of the proverbial.
You have had a really busy and exciting life, fraud I can’t compete althoughI did get O level English, or have I mentioned that before..

I’m sure it is kindly meant Megs but I think I am old enough to choose where I comment, don’t you?
I have no problem with Rufus’s newsy posts, but he seems to have a problem with mine.
