Why is a Jaffa Cake classed as a biscuit? It's made of sponge. Surely that makes it a cake.

Blossoming Wed 17-Feb-21 12:15:26

It isn’t. Jaffa Cakes are classed as cakes. There was a long court battle between McVities and HMRC.

Georgesgran Wed 17-Feb-21 12:54:34

I think the ‘accepted’ reason is that cakes go hard when stale and biscuits go soft. Another bit of pointless information. ?

Georgesgran Wed 17-Feb-21 12:59:26

My stupid gripe is when the customer before me doesn’t put the divider on the conveyor belt behind their shopping!

Blossoming Wed 17-Feb-21 13:14:42

That was the crux of the argument georgesgran It wasn’t pointless to McVities though as biscuits are classed as a luxury item and attract VAT. Cakes are classed as staple foods and are VAT free. They’d been around since the 1920s and HMRC tried to make them VATable in the 1990s. I love that cakes are classed as essentials grin

Ramblingrose22 Wed 17-Feb-21 13:22:13

Absolutely agree Blossoming. Life without just cake wouldn't be a life.

I once saw a claim on another website about a cake called "Better Than Sex Cake". I eagerly looked up the cake and its ingredients only to find one of its main ingredients was something I don't like. You can imagine my disappointment!

Maybe I should start an argument on the arguments thread about what the ingredients should have been.

I ate half a packet of jaffa cakes yesterday, not sure how essential that was!

DiscoGran Wed 17-Feb-21 13:31:40

Galaxy, only half a packet? You lightweight.

Galaxy Wed 17-Feb-21 13:32:12

I had to share sad

DiscoGran Wed 17-Feb-21 13:35:40

Those big bags of crisps and sweets with "sharing size" on them. ? Nope, I want them ALL to myself.

LauraNorder Wed 17-Feb-21 13:57:14

Most annoying thing for me is when Orlin drains the vegetable water in to the sink without first removing washing-up bowl. So bottom of said bowl is always mucky.

cornishpatsy Wed 17-Feb-21 13:58:56

Ready meals that state "pull back film" it does not pull back it needs stabbing with a knife then messily pulling off a bit at a time.

Food caddy bags that are impossible to open, Aldi ones a great but many others are not.

Broken biscuits in a new packet.

LauraNorder Wed 17-Feb-21 13:59:30

Better than Sex Cake would be better than sex if only one ingredient was not to my liking. smile

DiscoGran Wed 17-Feb-21 14:20:35

Anyone got that recipe??

timetogo2016 Wed 17-Feb-21 14:31:23

When people pick up loose fruit and veg and put it back and proceed by doing it again.
Especially in covid times
I buy all fruit and veg in bags at the moment and give them a swill before eating/cooking them.

DiscoGran Wed 17-Feb-21 14:42:17

That'll be me, trying to find a ripe avocado. ?

How disappointing Ramblingrose22, fancy ruining a cake by adding something you don’t like. I‘ve found a few different recipes, but all agree it starts with chocolate cake so I’d just go for that, naked and unadorned as it were grin

MissChateline Wed 17-Feb-21 17:07:27

The current situation has slowed me down a great deal and I think that I have more tolerant of others and behaviours. So if something isn’t important then it probably wouldn’t bother me.

grandmajet Wed 17-Feb-21 17:08:42

When eating out - remember those days - people who say, can it have a little bit of yours? No, order your own!

grandmajet Wed 17-Feb-21 17:09:11

Can I have, I mean.
Should always preview

NellG Wed 17-Feb-21 17:09:46

Packaging - when something 6 inches square arrives in a box the size of a sofa. The void having been padded with scrunched up brown paper/air bags/bubblewrap.

grandmajet Wed 17-Feb-21 17:09:57

Maybe I should add, people who don’t preview their posts then have to post again to correct them.

The people who, when you have told them you’ve just made marmalade, make it difficult for you not to offer them a jar.
