I follow a few cooking sites and, this morning, a recipe for 'a hearty stew' appeared in my inbox.

My heart sank. Not sure whether it is a throw back to school dinners, my mum's cooking or what.

I do sausage casserole, braised steak, coq au vin etc etc but the thought of hearty stews really depress me.

Anyone else?

I do like a hearty stew, actually.

Not that I'm sure what one actually is. smile

Yum, I do especially the ones that have big fluffy dumplings sat on top !

Love them, live on them in many various forms, including ones based entirely on vegetables.

My maternal Gran made the most delicious beef stew, pearl barley, carrots, swede, onions along with suet dumplings and heavenly mash on the side. I can taste it as I post, unfortunately despite numerous attempts I have never managed to cook one anywhere near as good.

Now it’s just DH and myself home alone and he dislikes any stews/casseroles/soups I have stopped making them. Always have coq-au-vin or beef bourginon (sp) if I see it on a menu.

I have always made and liked hearty stews, cottage pie , mince in various guises but no more.
I have gone off so many foods in the last year.
My taste has changed to a small piece of chicken, small piece of salmon and this last weekend a slice of home cooked gammon.
I don’t seem to be able to eat any food that has been “tinkered with”
Last week I made fridge bottom soup, usually a favourite.
Two small bowls and down the loo with it.
I very much regret this turn of events but must stick to it.

It depends on the time of year for me - nothing better on a cold, frosty winter’s day than a hearty stew!

School dinner ‘stew’ though - yuck!

We are having a beef casserole tonight, cooked in the pressure cooker, with dumplings and potatoes for OH, but extra veg for me. Now the weather is cooling I look forward to more of the same, although we usually have chicken casserole made with thighs. We use a chef’s base of onions, carrots and celery to give it more flavour. I love the flavour of celery but really dislike the texture, so it has to almost dissolve in the casserole. I’m now wishing I had some barley to add, as my mum and nana always used it. I’m wanting a nostalgia meal. ?

Last week in Waitrose the butcher boned a leg of lamb for me. Floured and seared in butter, it went into my slow cooker with carrots, onions, button mushrooms, potatoes, Worcestershire sauce, fresh thyme and lamb stock. Not technically a stove-top cooked stew, it was heavenly.
I used to make boeuf bourguignon but my DH wasn’t as keen as me. Like you, GG13, I seek it out on menus.

boeuf bourguignon every time, it's the sweet shallots.

I love a hearty stew - I used to make one for the family but not now that I’m own my own.

I like a hearty stew as well, all the veggies thrown in and a little meat. Always better on the second day. I like dumplings with it too Spinnaker

Like MissAdventure I'm not entirely sure what a hearty stew is. Can it be a casserole? I do enjoy meat and vegetable combinations cooked in a good stock, and topped with dumplings, whether cooked on the stove top or in the oven grin

I’m just about to put a hearty stew in the slow cooker with the help of a packet of Shwartz beef casserole mix.
Easy cheat, and tastes good.
Dumplings thanks to to a packet of ‘Goldenfry’ farmhouse dumpling mix.
Will be glad I did this about eight o’clock tonight, when I’m sat down , tired, and hardly any pots to wash.

Nearly forgot, and the pearl barley when I want to go all nostalgic for mum's cooking.

I love a stew, but served with potatoes rather than dumplings. However being Welsh, my favourite has to be cawl made with either shin/brisket, or a cheap cut of lamb. I make a big pan and it lasts me at least 2 days. cheap as chips as well.

nanna8 Tue 04-Oct-22 13:20:35

So long as it isn’t greasy, sounds nice. Beef bourguignon? I often make that in winter.

nanna8 Tue 04-Oct-22 13:22:01

What is cawl Helenlouise? I haven’t heard of that.

MissAdventure Tue 04-Oct-22 13:23:34

Whatever it is, I don't think I like it.

I love a hearty stew on a blustery cold day.

If you're in town, try Zedel they do a good one.

Delila Tue 04-Oct-22 13:33:16

Annsixty - me too. Nothing seems appetising recently.

Riverwalk Tue 04-Oct-22 13:36:01

I've been to Brasserie Zedel many times, my pre-theatre venue of choice, but never tried the boeuf bourguignon. Next time!
