When we got out to enjoy the beauty of the place we saw a herd of highland cows - handsome , huge animals , gorgeous colouring. The herdsman was in good control, but what a glorious sight !

But you can do both you can enjoy the moment and the beauty and also capture it to bring those feelings and memories back when you stuck at home or just wanting to relive the feelings surely that’s a win win situation

I was given that lesson when I was walking through Venice , years ago. I was walking with a friend, and I was taking pictures right and left. My friend said " Stop taking pictures with your phone, and take some with your mind. " We stopped and just looked around us ( St Mark's Square, not too crowded, a busking band playing, an artist painting on his easel , people wandering and laughing). I can picture that scene so easily after several years - more so than I ever could have done if I'd snapped a picture !

I think most people do appreciate their surroundings before photographing. It's the sense of joy/wonder that prompts their subsequent camera use.

Well, they do say 'Are you a tourist or a pilgrim?

I have many photos taken on holidays but the little paintings I have done bring back the memories and feel of a place in a way they don’t. I can actually feel the warmth and atmosphere.

I had a holiday in Italy ruined by a woman called Marilyn who had a brand new video recorder and filmed everything and everyone, making people stand still, move over, turn round etc.
I wonder if she ever looks at any of that footage now.

Do people go home and look at the hundreds of photos that have been taken?

My bil was hitching through Paris and had a long lift from an American couple. They stopped somewhere touristy and the husband asked his wife if she was coming with them “no, take some photos and I will look when we get home”.

My husband was the same. He kept a small sketch pad in his pocket. He took great pleasure in sitting a while to soak up the atmosphere whilst sketching the scene before him.
We took photos too, but the sketches were what gave the greater satisfaction.

We were on a tour of Cuba and one of our group sketched and painted some of the places we visited quite beautifully. I didn’t see her with a camera at all.
What a lovely memory.

I was in a hotel breakfast room in Venice and a couple had their devices out, obviously planning their day. The husband had his tablet open at a tourist site and was reading the description and the wife was looking at it on her phone. I wondered if they always communicated via these devices rather than having an actual conversation!

I then realised I was the only person in sight not staring into an electronic device - although I did have a laptop in my room. The antics of people with their phones does fascinate me. Its like Im a scientist watching an alien species from outside the experiment.

If I were to do my Ph.D. again I would choose some aspect of this behaviour. My original doctorate was in human computer interaction.

Absolutely correct!
We went on a cruise that took us to Alaska last year and we’re blessed with a stunning day. The captain from the bridge was imploring people to forget cameras, put down their phones and watch and look and embrace the beauty of the moments we were being shown. The staff were all on deck saying, the same they had never seen it so clearly.
Life is and should be like this very often too.
