The SNP is in a ‘tremendous mess’ apparently.

Since these two stepped down within weeks of one another the SNP seems to be imploding at a rate of knots.

What on Earth is going on? There is so much in-flighting.

I am not an expert on Scottish politics, however after watching several news items over the weekend from an outsiders point of view it does seem to be struggling

I suspect there is more to come, more revelations of whatever has led to these sudden resignations. Whatever the reasons, genuine or otherwise, Ms Sturgeon has failed badly in one area of leadership, namely succession planning. It is indefensible to just walk off into the sunset, leaving your political party rudderless. I am no fan of Ms Sturgeon and know little about her husband other than what Scottish family report, but she will be a hard act to follow because love her or loathe her, she certainly was a strong character and could talk the talk. The 3 candidates to replace her seem united in their lack of personality.

Exactly right HousePlantQueen, NS could certainly talk the talk, her resignation speech was proof of that, but as for walking the walk that’s a different story.

I have always thought that any political party where the two top jobs are held by a husband and wife team, or father and son, or brothers, sisters etc is a political party that is by definition a party that is morally and probably financially corrupt and has a membership that are too cowed or too prone to hero worship to be capable of good judgement.

In this case the mere fact that the two in charge could see no problem in the situation and, even more amazingly, neither could its members, suggests 'that something is rotten in the state of -Denmark- Scotland.

Deep seated problems in the body politic, which could require the complete break-up of the party and its reformation from scratch to completely root out.

Nicola Sturgeon and her acolytes have been fiercely critical of English government since she came to power. I do not know a great deal about Scottish politics but I am aware of the sad decline of the once excellent health and education services.
I suspect a great deal more will emerge now that her husband is no longer able to maintain his grip on the release of information.

Sturgeon seems to have sunk the SNP and for sure the indie movement.Good news for the Union.
Looks like she and her gravytrain husband have questions to answer over SNP funds as well.

Give it time Monica 😉

For once, the blame for politics in Scotland cannot be laid at the door of Westminster by those who always do so.

I hope this means an upsurge of support for Scottish Labour who lost out badly to the SNP. Their leader, Anas Sarwar comes across as very level headed.

Very unfair to name another poster who is not on a thread - no one is obliged to contribute.

It's one programme I avoid!

Sorry, Nicola.

Me too.

I dared to post once that the demise of Labour in Scotland may be a contributory factor in us having a Tory Government which could remain in in perpetuity as a result but was told I was being ridiculous.

Obviously it's not the only reason but it surely has some effect?

Ah, yes those lovely Scottish Labour MPs who voted for the introduction of university tuition fees, knowing that it didn't apply to Scotland.

NanaDana Mon 20-Mar-23 15:30:42

Such a sudden, unconvincingly explained (burn-out? Really?) departure. I do wonder what the whole story is. The SNP will find it hard to recover from this, as regardless of what you thought of Sturgeon's divisive politics, she was a convincing leader, and certainly performed well on the public stage. I don't see anyone shaping up as a credible, effective successor, which I guess is good news for the Union? 54% against Independence at the last count? Wonder what it is now? Yes, a day can be a long time in politics, and "the bubble reputation" is so easily burst..

Joseanne Mon 20-Mar-23 15:37:46

I had no idea there was a Mr. Sturgeon in the (political) picture, as if Nicola Sturgeon didn't have enough baggage anyway. But I'm not au fait with Scottish politics.
Will the new broom sweep all the problems clean or brush them under the carpet? I've heard it said that one of the female candidates is as ineffectual as Liz Truss, heaven help the party, and that there is a lot of arguing. Other than that, I don't know what is going on?
