Out of the pure goodness of my heart I am starting this thread for people who don't like the C-word, or who don't want any mention of it until much later, so they can enjoy being disgruntled together, and not have to venture on to the 'gruntled' threads and be accused of being grumpy old killjoys.

Grannybags Wed 16-Oct-19 08:52:03

Well done Witzend I love 1st January when it's all over for another year!

Sealover Wed 16-Oct-19 08:59:14

Hurrah, fed up already of being reminded how many days there are until C. Adverts telling us to spend, spend, spend and have the BEST C. ever. Even better than last year.

Sara65 Wed 16-Oct-19 09:03:12

Sealover

Can that be possible? Can it really be even better? And all we have to do is spend loads more money?

Happy Christmas everyone, get out your credit cards, and prepare for the best Christmas ever!

grapefruitpip Wed 16-Oct-19 09:09:11

I am very anxious ( already) about it.

Bad time of year for me.

Pittcity Wed 16-Oct-19 09:14:15

I like it low key and completely contained in December.

Grannybags Wed 16-Oct-19 09:14:34

Me too.

Grannybags Wed 16-Oct-19 09:15:17

Crossed posts. That was for grapefruitpip

Perhaps we could have a wee supportive chat , without being bashed for lack of magical sparkle.

Love Christmas - well in fact, loved - it has become far too commercial, just one big selling opportunity, and tons of waste and pollution, highlighting class/money divide and encouraging families to borrow money they can't afford. Sad that the UK is following the USA here.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 16-Oct-19 09:36:03

69 days to go ?

TinaSharp Wed 16-Oct-19 09:40:57

I'm not a fan of the whole countdown thing - get Halloween and bonfire night out of the way first!

Hetty58 Wed 16-Oct-19 09:43:47

'Looking forward to Christmas?', 'Done all your Christmas shopping?', people say cheerily (even this early) and really p* me off!

MawB Wed 16-Oct-19 09:44:39

Youngest DD’s birthday is in November and I have always held off any C planning until after then.
Time enough!

millymouge Wed 16-Oct-19 09:45:43

[Pittcity] I’m with you. That’s how it should be.

Hetty58 Wed 16-Oct-19 09:46:12

grapefruitpip, it's certainly a challenge for those of us missing a departed one. I'm cutting down to the point where I can almost ignore it!

EllanVannin Wed 16-Oct-19 09:56:29

The very least of my thoughts at the moment. I tend to look out for the lighter nights after the festivities are over after a couple of months feeling like I've lived in a cave, dark days and nights.

SparklyGrandma Wed 16-Oct-19 09:58:53

Me too Grannybags and grapefruitpip.

Every year it’s a challenge to make it pass as quickly as possible ?

annsixty Wed 16-Oct-19 10:01:56

My mother was the original Grinch about C........s and her attitude has coloured my life.
I made sure my C enjoyed when they are young but my M spent everyone with us until she was 97 so it was an uphill battle.
My H died in April this year so no jollifications this year.
I am happy for those who love it as long as they keep it just to the couple of weeks in December.

Calendargirl Wed 16-Oct-19 10:25:18

Yes, if only it could go back to being a bit more, well, simple. I don’t send as many cards as I used to, waste of paper really and postage! I feel I have to get them written by about Remembrance Day, am sure my mum never wrote on her cards until well into December when we were young. Can also recall the postman bringing a parcel on Christmas Eve from an auntie, nothing unusual about it being so late.
The time from Bonfire Night to Christmas seemed an eternity back then, and had never heard of Hallowe’en!

GrannyGravy13 Wed 16-Oct-19 10:45:17

I have DH, DS and GS’s birthdays in the week before C*******s!!

Littleannie Wed 16-Oct-19 14:51:21

I think this thread is aimed at me, after Witzend posted a rude comment about something I said on another thread.
It is nothing but people filling their houses with tinsel and plastic junk, eating like gluttons, and buying useless junk for people who don't want it, so they can buy useless junk back. Never mind, it can be thrown away - to landfill that is.
The original post I commented on, said she had got her decorations down from the loft, and hung her Christmas lights in the garden. Someone else said she was panic buying Christmas stuff in case of Brexit. In October, for goodness sake!
Knitted Advent calendars with felt robins and penguins anybody?
Incidentally, after 3 bereavements in the family, and 2 serious illnesses (me) this year, I don't feel much like celebrating anything.
So, my message of good cheer to Witzend is - p**s off.

DoraMarr Wed 16-Oct-19 15:01:51

Ha ha! Another who thinks it is far too early to be thinking of it. When I was working I never started my Christmas shopping until school broke up. I was a teacher and had enough of Christmas during the Christmas run-up-which seemed to start as soon as we got back from October half term. ( Anyone else guilty of snarling at fed-up infants in their umpteenth rehearsal “Smile, angels!”) I haven’t made any plans, and I sincerely hope my children aren’t having a “who’s having mum?” conversation. I do have a tree, and send cards, and buy presents, and enjoy all the fun, but not until December!

annsixty Wed 16-Oct-19 15:07:16

Uncalled for Littleannie.

cornergran Wed 16-Oct-19 15:16:30

The family situation means a different, difficult Christmas for us so no, I’m not thinking about it yet. Why make myself miserable? It is too early. Come mid December I’ll decorate but hope to ignore it all until then. I’ve no problem with others engaging with it whenever they choose. Just remember we aren’t all the same and don’t assume. I’m still waiting for Autumn leaves smile.
