Cheap overrated fizzy Italian wine or not?

notanan2 Mon 16-Dec-19 18:57:38

I'm not a fan. I do like champagne.

MiniMoon Mon 16-Dec-19 19:16:22

It's horrible stuff. Even if you've paid a fortune for it!

Pantglas2 Mon 16-Dec-19 19:26:27

Like notanan2 I love champagne but it’s a rare treat! In Spain I drink cava, which is so cheap over there (obvs), as it is made in the same way as champagne i.e. secondary fermentation in the bottle.

I’d never buy Prosecco as it is just cheap wine fermented in a huge vat but I would never comment if someone served it to me.

Ellianne Mon 16-Dec-19 19:32:52

The younger generation seem to like it.
Champagne for me.

CoolioC Mon 16-Dec-19 19:37:41

Ellianne
I see it like Asti Spumante when we were young.

annsixty Mon 16-Dec-19 20:21:04

Well I like a glass of Prosecco and I do like good wine but Prosecco has a place in my drinking.

Mapleleaf Mon 16-Dec-19 20:24:52

It probably depends upon which one you buy. As with champagnes, there are good ones, mediocre ones and downright horrible ones! ?

Nannarose Mon 16-Dec-19 20:30:11

It is difficult to write this without sounding pretentious (!). But having spent a camping holiday in the area (north east Italy) - the good Prosecco from the producers is terrific! I also recommend it for a holiday, especially if you are driving and can stock up.

It’s quite quaffable and doesn’t give me a hangover or upset my hiatus hernia. What’s not to like.

FlyingFree Mon 16-Dec-19 20:49:37

It's so gross! ?

notanan2 Mon 16-Dec-19 20:52:21

Cava had a moment then prosecco took over.

Good marketing

Grannybags Mon 16-Dec-19 20:54:55

None for me thank you!

Pantglas2 Mon 16-Dec-19 21:13:19

Too true notanan2- a bit like voters choosing Boris, good marketing!

Greyduster Mon 16-Dec-19 21:47:45

I’ve only had it once, decided I never wanted to drink it again and can’t see what all the fuss is about.

EllanVannin Mon 16-Dec-19 22:20:36

Never tasted it. If I were to drink anything it would be a drop of brandy because at least it has beneficial factors.

Maggiemaybe Mon 16-Dec-19 22:44:31

As in every other type of alcoholic drink, including champagne, there’s a vast difference between good Prosecco and bad Prosecco. Simple as that really.

So in answer to the OP, yes....and no.

Italy is the world's largest wine producer and they joke that they export all the mediocre stuff and keep the good stuff for themselves.

GrandmaMoira Tue 17-Dec-19 10:01:00

I'm fussy about ordinary wine but when it comes to fizz they all taste the same to me. I can only drink a small glass as fizzy drinks give me indigestion. Last year I drunk 3 glasses of Prosecco (over a few hours) and was kept awake all night so vowed not to drink it again.

Esspee Tue 17-Dec-19 10:08:38

Don't like fizz of any sort but have to conduct wine tastings from time to time. I can usually guess which customers are going to ask to compare the proseccos. That's not a compliment!

Esspee Tue 17-Dec-19 10:10:05

They tend to be mindless airheads whilst the ones who go for the port are my kind of people.

annsixty Tue 17-Dec-19 10:28:22

Well thank you for that Esspee
I can now add mindless airhead to the list of names I have been called by GN members.
The list goes on.
I won't start a list of names for some posters, it may offend?

annodomini Tue 17-Dec-19 10:38:10

Annsixty... let's clink glasses!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 17-Dec-19 10:45:30

Cheers annsixty and annodomini I enjoy a glass of fizz, whether that be a nice prosecco, champagne, cava or cremont ??

Davidhs Tue 17-Dec-19 10:52:12

Prosecco, cheap fizzy Italian plonk, guaranteed to make women giggly and loud fast, it’s only saving grace is that it’s cheap.
