Christmas

Christmas as usual

I have decided to have a normal Christmas. That doesn't mean any breaking of rules.

It means that the house will be as decorated as it always is, cooking and catering will be as normal and those present will do all the usual things. On the day, there may be only DD and me as DH is in hospital, he may be home, he may have day release, or we may be visiting him.

It was writing about my childhood as an army brat. No matter where we were. Christmas day was always the same. I suddenly realised that we were in a similar situation this year and I ddid not want ' year without Christmas' when I allow outside circumstances change our traditions, so everything is going ahead and normal.

Must just dash off and decant the blackberry gin.

Namsnanny Tue 15-Dec-20 13:15:12

Same here!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 15-Dec-20 13:17:24

We are doing the same Monica house is decorated inside and out, Turkey, ham etc all ordered.

I could not imagine not celebrating Christmas, this year will just be quieter ??

jusnoneed Tue 15-Dec-20 13:38:58

Blackberry gin sounds good!

It will be a normal christmas here, no fuss/no decorations/turkey because OH thinks it's not crimbo without it (wouldn't bother myself), pressies swap with son (we don't give to each other) and just us two to feed.

Yes, much as normal here too, but with some social distancing going on, and no visitors staying over ( or staying all that long really.) The house is already decorated and we seem to have a G&T or a Baileys to hand most evenings.?

We will be almost normal except for inviting neighbours in for drinks or elongated shopping trips with nice lunches. Juts a quiet one really but decorations and food all the same. Lots of TV, lots of food and the demon drink. wine

Situpstraight2 Tue 15-Dec-20 15:38:52

Apart from seeing family, Christmas will be the same as other years. Decs have been up for over a week, lights up indoors and out, presents bought and waiting to be wrapped DDs and GCs all sent via courier.
Food and drink all in too. Just fresh stuff to buy.

annsixty Tue 15-Dec-20 16:09:31

Sorry to hear your DH is in hospital M0nica I send best wishes to him for a speedy return home to you.

M0nica Tue 15-Dec-20 19:58:16

annsixty Thank you.

I have bought vast amounts of food and drink wine, we are not having people round, we will be eating and drinking for months grin

Everything normal here - decorations are almost finished, cards are sent. We're far away from our families so rarely see them anyway. Lots of walks. A few of our favourite films. We don't drink much alcohol but will have the odd Baileys (probably home made version) and a glass of wine with lunch. No turkey as OH doesn't like it, probably a nice bit of beef or pork, haven't decided yet. Just a restful, peaceful time I hope.

Monica I hope your DH is home with you for Christmas, and feeling better and you both have a lovely, normal, Christmas.

Alioop Wed 16-Dec-20 10:11:26

Xmas cupboard filled, beef bought(no turkey for 1st time ever), presents in gift bags to leave outside doors and house all decorated, probably more than its ever been. Just my sis & I, plus our doggies, so all ready just to sit and look at each other all day. Whoopie doo!

Callistemon Wed 16-Dec-20 10:31:19

We normally have a couple of get togethers with neighbours so that won't be happening and we would probably stay overnight at DS and DIL's which we are not doing.
Otherwise we hope to have a quieter but enjoyable Christmas.

The decorations are up with just a very small tree this year.

I hope your DH can spend Christmas Day with you M0nica and gets well again soon.

We'll be missing my daughter and her family, but it's nothing to do with Covid it's because she's a carer and is working. We're having a Christmas party , mainly because well have enough food to feed the street, with them on the 27th, shes working the next day.

Best wishes to your DH Monica I hope you have him home soon.
Normal Christmas here too, we are lucky to be in a bubble with DD2 & DSiL as DGD is less than a year old, the Christmas tree is lit up & other decorations in place.
But a little sad that we can’t share Christmas with our dear friends as we usually do.

felice Wed 16-Dec-20 12:46:48

Different for us this year, still the same combined family as every year, with the addition of a young friend who has been unable to go home so is going to be with us instead.
She has just moved into a small apartment nearby and DGS is very excited.
It will be lovely to have a young person around, she comes for Sunday lunch every week but this will be special.
I am only allowed one person to visit plus family or I would invite more of the young people who are not home for Christmas.

I have just heard on BBC news that although the decision about tiers will be made today, it will not be announced until tomorrow. Why?
Sorry this is a slight diversion but the only thing I have planned is lunch out on Christmas Day with my GD.

No meeting up with family or friends.
I have felt safer in the one restaurant I have been in than most people say they have felt in shops.
I have not been in a shop since the beginning of March.
The booking we have had since October will not be possible unless we go into tier 2.
Our numbers in Stockport have been consistently low but we get lumped in with Manchester.
With days to go to get shopping in if we can’t go out I feel very unhappy.
My GD will have to shop on Saturday.
Rant over now.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 16-Dec-20 16:20:45

Quiet Christmas as per usual, although we will probably have to miss going to church.

Urmstongran Wed 16-Dec-20 16:26:45

I’m hoping Gtr. Manchester goes down to Tier 2 as well annsixty as we have a table booked (months ago) for Christmas Day. We haven’t bought or ordered any food yet if it’s not allowed!

Perhaps tomorrow I’d better put these on a low light ...

Nortsat Wed 16-Dec-20 16:36:04

M0nica good decision.
There will only be the two of us, but we’ve put up decorations and the tree. We will have turkey and all the usual trimmings, champagne and Christmas crackers.

I think it’s really important to make the effort and ensure it’s special and fun.

Urms ... have you not got your sprouts on yet? Never mind putting your tree up ... get your sprouts on, woman !

Lucca Wed 16-Dec-20 17:06:58

Have the bubble rules changed ? Is it no longer single person + other household ? I keep reading posts saying “we” are in a bubble....

Jaxjacky Wed 16-Dec-20 17:42:35

Lucca your are right on bubbles outside of the Christmas 5 days, over that 5 days you can have a separate bubble of two other groups, up to 6 I believe, that group is fixed for that period and exclusive. I think I’ve got it right, happy to be corrected.

janeainsworth Wed 16-Dec-20 18:27:00

Lucca the rules about bubbles changed in December 2.
This is from the BBC website:
“The government says it will be expanding the eligibility of support bubbles from 2 December to help families with very young children or people with continuous care needs, meaning households can form a support bubble with another household, if at least one of them has:
a child under 1 (regardless of how many other adults are in the household)
a child under 5 with a disability that requires continuous care (regardless of how many other adults are in the household)
a single adult carer (living with any additional adults in the household that have a disability and need continuous care)”
