The least romantic gift I ever received was given to me at Christmas a couple of years ago. I had no idea what my DH had bought for me. I had made lots of hints about what I would like. My gift came in a square box, beautifully wrapped, and I was full of anticipation. I opened the parcel and saw ... an electric toothbrush . I was deflated! I thanked him kindly, but I think he knew that it was the wrong thing to give your wife for Christmas.

After spending weeks tracking down a certain type of new fishing rod my OH wanted (eventually found it) I hoped as much effort would be put into my present. Ummm no.... wrapped parcel contained a rack that you fix to wall and put your Iron on top part and hang the ironing board on hooks underneath!! Not impressed and I never bought him another present after, nor got one from him - thankfully. This was about 30 years ago and yes we are still together lol.

Well, I got the iron once!

I was given a roasting tin from DH as a Christmas present.

I have a bureau given to me when I was eleven. Over the years is has lost a screw from the pull-down bit. DH did some research over the Internet and managed to track one down that fit. He wrapped it up in a shoe box ! It did take a lot of research and funnily enough I was very pleased with it. Maybe I am just not romantic!

In our early years together my DH managed to get it wrong on several occasions with household appliances or once a set of Pyrex dishes ! But he topped that one year my buying me a beautiful necklace. I loved it but the chain was too short so I asked if he would exchange it for a longer chain.

I never saw it or a replacement ever again.

It was the gift that never was!

DH bought me quilted nylon princess-line dressing gown which was more suited to a dainty soul of 5' instead of my lofty 5'10". It reached mid-calf and was lime-green with wide lapels trimmed with white lace. What were supposed to be orange roses looked more like snails. The children had bought me shocking-pink fluffy slippers. grin

My Dh bought me a Swiss army penknife many years ago, as it came in a small parcel I was hoping for jewellery!! I kept it in my handbag, just in case and had it confiscated at Gatwick airport.

For my 21st DH, then fiancé, took me to see a show with someone he liked in but I didn't and bought me an LP he wanted. Must be love because I still married him and we are approaching our 48th anniversary!

Before we were married my DH bought me a Christmas present , it was wrapped very prettily and decorated with a huge bow. On opening it I found a pair of pink double nylon sheets! His presents to me have improved over the years. May have something to do with the fact that I have never let him forget the sheets.

My exh2 hinted he'd bought me something gold and small. It was a gold coloured miniature torch for my keyring!
He only lasted 18 months!

I hate receiving a box of chocolates as a present - it's just so unimaginative - it's ok as thank you or to bring to a meal but it's never a romantic gift

A floor cleaner - it backfired on him though, I said I couldn't work out how to use it so now he cleans the floors

This thread is grin

greenfinch that is sooo romantic!

Since I have taken up knitting again in recent years, every birthday and Christmas I say to husband, "Please no wool", because of the time he bought me about 12 balls of scratchy brown tweed. And he looked so pleased with himself! smile

A deep-fat fryer one Christmas from ex-DH

downtoearth Mon 08-Feb-16 16:12:56

on birth of 2nd child ...box of all bran appeared along with request to sew a button on his shirt..

downtoearth Mon 08-Feb-16 16:16:14

that was followed by an Argos points card, the type you get for filling up with petrol..the company paid for the petrol...was told to buy what I wanted for my christmas present.....there was £3.99 on it....

A secondhand car bonnet from the scrapyard.
My car bonnet was dented when a pheasant flew out of a hedge and I hit it; the damn bird shook itself and flew off but I was left with a dent in my green car's bonnet.
I took the car to the garage who told me I needed a new bonnet because of where the dent was it couldn't be knocked out.
So..... DH gave me a bright red, secondhand bonnet two years later, on St. Valentines Day, 'because I knew you'd like a 'useful present'!

Same DH who gave me a monkey wrench for a birthday present- to this day I don't have the foggiest idea what you'd use a monkey wrench for ?!

A suitcase strap with my name on it.

Before we had the central heating put in, I had complained often of how freezing cold our bedroom was. My DH responded by buying me a nightdress for Christmas. It was brushed cotton, full length, long sleeved and buttoned up to the neck confused It wasn't even a pretty fabric (well let's face it, 'pretty' would have been wasted on such a garment) - it was dark blue and white stripes. Not unlike old finished pillow ticking. Another year he bought me a canteen of cutlery.
I got my own back, though. I bought him a cast iron griddle pan after he'd admired one in a kitchen shop and said how good it would be for cooking steaks grin

grannylyn65 Mon 08-Feb-16 16:34:42

Oh no trouble with this one!
My (now ex) husband gave me a saucepan for our first Christmas together. Not only that, the pan lasted 3 times longer than marriage!!!gringrin

Indinana Mon 08-Feb-16 16:35:22

old finished? Old fashioned - damn you predictive text!

mumofmadboys Mon 08-Feb-16 17:47:51

This thread has made me laugh!!. My DH once bought me some pants from M and S - mulipack including red tartan ones !!!! I took them back!!

fionajk42 Mon 08-Feb-16 17:50:30

One Christmas DH gave me a power screwdriver - so I would not have to bother him when I needed to do tasks involving screws that were too difficult for me to tighten or untighten. After 35 years of marriage, it's still me that does any DIY - he hasn't a clue!
