In Dubai...24/7 curfew now and an online application needed for a permit to visit the supermarket...

How do you think they managed the virus emergency in China? If they are told to jump they ask how high, we argue for all we are worth!

SalsaQueen Sun 05-Apr-20 21:44:07

We're actually really lucky, in many ways. In China, things are restricted all the time - tv, newspapers, internet, all censored. The people are repressed.

CherryCezzy Sun 05-Apr-20 21:54:11

Is everyone online in Dubai? Not everyone in the UK is. A curfew of that nature only works if there is no mass desperation.

I dont know..thankfully my daughter and babies are...would think that everyone is...

I can't answer about TV in China SQ, because I didn't watch it there (don't speak Mandarin). But you can get western newspapers in China. I had a subscription to the Guardian while I lived there.

EVERYONE has a VPN (virtual private network) so can access the regular, western internet. I'm not even sure the government really try to stop VPN usage. My school set it up for us when I worked there and lots of our students were the children of CPC ministers. I used all of my usual social media AND watched the BBC online using it in China.

Yes, things are very different there. But the average Chinese person is no different to the average Western person.

Dubai has it right I think, people shouldn’t be going to the supermarket frequently like some still are here.

GagaJo Sun 05-Apr-20 22:49:55

I agree Casdon. Once a week, maximum.

A friend of mine has got the virus. She was ONLY going out for the supermarket, once a week and walking her dog.

It's tough if you are a nurse or doctor on the frontline. Very tough indeed. Or a parademic
It's extra hard work if you are providing the nation with food
If you are a policeman, serviceman or woman, or anyone else who is working in a viral frontline job
Trying to keep your firm going by working at home
Keeping the roads open

For many of us at home, retired, furloughed or whatever, it is worrying, frightening, inconvenient but we are not experiencing what they are experiencing.

Vital

gillybob Sun 05-Apr-20 23:01:48

Let’s hear in mind that some people don’t have a car to fill the boot with groceries and need to do a couple of small shops a week .

gillybob Sun 05-Apr-20 23:02:03

Sorry I meant bear in mind.

Hetty58 Sun 05-Apr-20 23:05:21

Supermarkets are the main place where social distancing isn't always possible. The virus can be in the air, on trolley handles, food packaging, at the checkout - and in the loos.

People still aren't following the advice to visit infrequently. What is the earthly point in queuing outside two metres apart - in a breeze?

Hetty58 Sun 05-Apr-20 23:08:11

gillybob, I disagree. I've never had a car and used to visit supermarkets. There's no need to go twice a week!

mokryna Sun 05-Apr-20 23:09:34

In France, from tomorrow there is a new gadget to be added on the iPhone instead of having the downloaded signed and dated government document. I find this a bit scary as they say that this will help them, in the future to track how the virus is spreading and then... after..

When I lived in China, I had BBC and wanted my Chinese teacher to watch the news but she refused saying that Chinese people had been warned that foreigners and their news media were giving false details, regarding at that time deaths in floods.

gillybob Sun 05-Apr-20 23:10:28

There is if you are a single parent with children to feed Hetty (sorry to disagree ) .

MissAdventure Sun 05-Apr-20 23:12:40

I can barely carry more than 2 bags of shopping.

gillybob Sun 05-Apr-20 23:27:25

Exactly MissA imagine trying to shop as a single parent with a child (or more) in tow, with no transport . Not easy.

MissAdventure Sun 05-Apr-20 23:31:53

It's not as if some have access to a car, and public transport, through nobody's fault, has been terrible.

janipat Sun 05-Apr-20 23:32:29

Hetty58 not everyone can carry on foot the weekly requirements for a family of 1/2 adults and 4 children as would have been my lot some years ago. DH worked away from home and at that time I had no access to the car.

gillybob Sun 05-Apr-20 23:36:36

I have always taken my DD and her little one shopping . She doesn’t drive and I can’t tell you how hard it is for her with a baby in tow. It is breaking my heart. I have driven to hers and left some heavy stuff on her doorstep . Rang her phone and driven away . I just couldn’t bear to see her and my little Evie’s face . Heartbreaking .

Callistemon Sun 05-Apr-20 23:38:40

MissA have you got a backpack, it could be easier to carry heavy stuff in one of those than lugging it along in your hands.

Callistemon Sun 05-Apr-20 23:39:26

Or an old lady's shopping trolley?
Quite trendy, I hear.

gillybob Sun 05-Apr-20 23:41:37

My DD has just acquired one Calli . She says it’s brilliant And a life saver !

janipat Sun 05-Apr-20 23:43:09

oh gillybob that's so tough for you both. The end of this purgatory can't come quick enough. I ache to see my grandsons in this country, I'm resigned to not seeing the Canadian contingent this year at all sad
