There should be ONS figures out tomorrow for week ending 10th April.

Will be interesting to see if the number of deaths in excess of the 5 year average has changed much (in either direction)

Every day I wait for the two figures to be amalgamated. But no apparently we are two different countries

It's horrific and I really feel for the families because when you have sick or dying relatives, you want so much to be there for them. There's huge sadness surrounding funerals too. It's tragic and people will be suffering from PTSD for a long time to come..

Equally tragic are the figures put out by Save the Children which say 18,000 children under five die every day from preventable causes: poor nutrition, water and lack of medical care.

In our extended family we lost two people last week. Both in their eighties. Both living in care homes, both never went to hospital but had coronovirus on their death certificates.

according to my cousin who lives in the south of England doctors are being told NOT to put CV on death certificates where there were underlying conditions .Even when the test for CV was psoitive

Evie64 Thu 23-Apr-20 20:28:48

Paddyanne - that's outrageous. shock The Govt. has obviously told them not to use CV if they can avoid it as it would make them look even more inadequate than they already are! Shocking

GrannyLaine Thu 23-Apr-20 21:11:28

I don't know what's behind that directive paddyanne but the CMO explained on the briefing today that if someone has been tested and found positive for Covid-19 it will be checked against the Death Certificate and the stats amended accordingly.

I saw that too and I think it’s absolutely disgraceful. If a patient has died with Coronavirus and has other conditions, it surely doesn’t mean that Coronavirus hasn’t killed them. Unless that person would have died that very day from the other condition.
Massaging figures makes me feel very cross.

I also wait every day for the two figures to either be amalgamated, or at least the two figures quoted. I want to know the truth!

Damage limitation is the name of the game now. We won't be able to trust the statistics for Coronavirus - but excess death figures can't be changed or downplayed.

BradfordLass73 Fri 24-Apr-20 02:43:35

According to the BBC, it is possible to have C-19 but the reason for death is not C-19.

That makes sense to me if we believe you can be asymptomatic with it.

After all, people in rest homes and hospital often die from breathing problems, pneumonia, heart issues - why put it all down to C-19 if it's not?

My next door neighbour is a nurse. We were having a conversation yesterday about that exact subject. She said her and her work colleagues are saying exactly what you said.
