UK visitor isolation

I flew into the UK yesterday. At the Swiss airport, the Swiss airline agent grilled me as to whether I'd registered my isolation address on the UK You.Gov website. He was most threatening, predicting incarceration or expulsion upon landing if I hadn't registered.

I landed in the uk and no one checked anything.

Well, that’s a surprise.....

BlueSky Sun 28-Jun-20 08:34:18

GagaJo as responsible adults in the U.K. we don't need threats, I'm sure everybody will act as advised. How could they implement that you actually isolate for 2 weeks anyway?

Ellianne Sun 28-Jun-20 08:37:49

If the swiss airline had not checked thoroughly it would have been their responsibility to bring you back to Switzerland ie. from the starting point. They don't want to have to incur any more costs.

“GagaJo as responsible adults in the U.K. we don't need threats, I'm sure everybody will act as advised“

You are joking of course we’ve seen exactly how responsible the population is with beaches and parties this week.

Nobody gives a damn unless they are forced to.

Lucca Sun 28-Jun-20 09:19:46

Agreed David.

BlueSky Sun 28-Jun-20 09:31:09

Well one can always hope! How would it be implemented? You would have to tag people!

fourormore Sun 28-Jun-20 10:01:28

I agree with BlueSky that it's impossible to implement but sadly, events over the past few weeks (marches, protests, football etc.) have all proved that David is correct.

DH and I have reasons for needing to stay healthy so we are voluntarily steering clear of as many people as possible.
However, people around us seem oblivious to the fact that a second wave is erupting big time in Korea and sadly, I feel it's a matter of time before it spreads again sad

I appreciate some people need to be out and about but surely there is a case to ask ourselves before we mix with others - is it really necessary?

Going of the OP subject now though - sorry! I was surprised to hear she had NO checks on arrival in the UK.

Davidhs Sun 28-Jun-20 10:55:19

There are very few travelling at present, to say that incomers cannot be supervised is nonsense.

To travel to Australia the rules on arrival are:-

All travellers entering Australia need to undertake a mandatory 14-day quarantine at a designated facility (for example a hotel) at their port of arrival.

Airport hotels are empty it could be done but nobody cares!.

BlueSky Sun 28-Jun-20 11:27:43

Can you imagine the outcry if people were detained on arrival in the U.K. for a 14 days quarantine? BAME riots? You ain't seen nothing yet!

growstuff Sun 28-Jun-20 11:33:04

I don't care about the outcry. It should be implemented. I'm fed up of people thinking the UK is different from other places and bleating on about freedom. We need leadership!

GrannyGravy13 Sun 28-Jun-20 11:40:42

Did you show your passport at passport control? If so the information you gave at the Swiss passport control would have come up on their computer.

It will be interesting to see if you are contacted in the coming days to verify you are self quarantined

BlueSky Sun 28-Jun-20 11:47:44

I must say Australia is dealing with this in the usual straightforward way! You would be exempt though on health or compassionate grounds. Tough on us with families over there!

Davidhs Sun 28-Jun-20 12:21:47

Not sure about OZ but NZ has deleted compassionate grounds after one traveler started an outbreak, everyone has to do the 14 days

This is going to go on for a long time because they have no herd immunity at all down under.

MawB Sun 28-Jun-20 12:34:59

Gagajo are you complaining that as a U.K. resident returning from a short time in Switzerland (not a Covid hotspot) you were assumed to be going home and were responsible enough to follow the guidelines?
If your details were checked before you left Switzerland and you had as you said already registered your details on the relevant U.K. website, what more do you want?
If you had been cross examined or interrogated or in any way subjected to a detailed examination at Heathrow or wherever, no doubt we would have been among the first to hear about it.
There are infinitely “hotter spots” on the globe that our immigration officials need to worry about, Pakistan currently being one of them.

My son flew in from India late April. He had to have his temperature checked before boarding and wear a mask for the flight. 300 on flight. Once in UK no advice whatsoever. He did self isolate for 14 days.

Hear hear .

I must admit I'm not quite sure if you're complaining about the Swiss checking you or the UK not checking you.

But didn't you post on Friday that you'd already travelled. Not that the day matters its just I like things to be tidy.

There is a huge difference between the deaths per day in late April and now however.

Chewbacca Sun 28-Jun-20 13:11:37

The opportunity in Switzerland hasn't turned out to be a riotous sucess, what with one thing or another, has it Gagajo?

GagaJo Sun 28-Jun-20 19:23:41

That's an understatement Chewbacca! I spent more time in the UK than I did in Switzerland although still on Swiss wages, so can't complain.

GagaJo Sun 28-Jun-20 19:28:48

I'm complaining about the lack of checks in the UK about the 2 week isolation. Why implement the system if there is to be no policing at all.

If I hadn't registered no one would have cared because certainly no one in the UK checked.

Chewbacca Sun 28-Jun-20 19:34:13

Chalk it up to experience Gaga! And it sounds as though the DH at the school has become more conciliatory now so, all in all, it didn't turn out so bad! Onwards and upwards!

MayBee70 Mon 29-Jun-20 12:10:46

I listened to a blog yesterday that said one of the reasons for the spike of Covid in Leicester may be because many people were flying in from Pakistan and going straight to hospital: as if they felt ill and decided the best thing to do would be to travel to the U.K. (not sure if it was to stay with relatives or return home). It was in one of Dr Johns utube blogs so there was no racist undertone to the comment.

GagaJo Wed 01-Jul-20 09:53:23

That theor has since been refuted MayBee70. Caused by factories continuing to stay open through lockdown.
