Spike of infections in Leicester

So 658 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in Leicester in the first two weeks of June - a definite spike in infections. And what has been done about it? Lots of hand-wringing and “there might have to be a local lockdown” ie b@&&#r all. Any other country would have been in there in a flash testing, tracing and isolating to get to grips with the situation. But we’re going to wait and see. So no lessons learned in the last 3 months then!

No surprise.

No surprise.

What do you mean? Why is it no surprise?

Rosalyn69 Sun 28-Jun-20 16:09:32

No surprise that the government aren’t doing anything proactive.

Illte Sun 28-Jun-20 16:31:22

No, no. I can't let that bit of misinformation go.

There has been a very proactive response especially tracking and tracing.

I should know. I've been traced and advised.

I think the Op should admit she doesn't actually know about it.

That's good to know Illte.

Ah! Sorry! I misunderstood your post. I agree with you.

Yes, that does sound encouraging.

I agree with Illte, their has been proactive action. The Home Secretary has already issued a statement to confirm that they are close to a localised lockdown; it's the mayor of Leicester, Sir Peter Soulsby, who has said that there's no immediate prospect. So the deferral is at local government level, not national.

growstuff Sun 28-Jun-20 16:51:04

Has the flare up been contained?

Peardrop50 Sun 28-Jun-20 16:54:00

Surely local government should take responsibility for local lockdowns. Westminster can't hold the hand of every town and city in the land that has an outbreak.

lemongrove Sun 28-Jun-20 16:56:06

Yes, it should do Peardrop but the Mayor will be thinking of lost trade as pubs and cafes and shops will be open by next week. This shouldn’t be the case...but it will be.

Chewbacca Sun 28-Jun-20 16:59:42

You'd like to think so wouldn't you Peardrop50 but it would seem that they can't actually agree what to do for the best at local level. The mayor says there is no immediate prospect, whilst
Leicester East MP, Claudia Webbe, has called for a lockdown due to a "perfect storm" of poverty, positive tests and higher ethnic diversity.

Smileless2012 Sun 28-Jun-20 17:01:23

Who has the authority at a local level to make the decision?

chattykathy Sun 28-Jun-20 17:08:35

There's no actual guidance on how a local shutdown would operate so little proactivity from the Government, yet again!

Illte Sun 28-Jun-20 17:16:30

Well everyone's entitled to their opinion even if they haven't actually bothered to find out the facts. Obviously my experience of the very efficient track and trace conducted by the extra units that were drafted in is, well just fantasy I guess.

I'm very thankful for the tracking fairy?

Chewbacca Sun 28-Jun-20 17:18:59

chattycathy have you not seen that Illte has already posted about her very positive experience in Leicester?

FarNorth Sun 28-Jun-20 17:26:08

So the deferral is at local government level, not national.

Surely the government can overrule the mayor, if necessary.

Illte have contacts been asked to self-isolate? That could give hope that the outbreak may not get out of hand.

kittylester Sun 28-Jun-20 17:29:08

And, the elected Mayor is full of bluster as he has been caught breaking lockdown by visiting his partner 'who was very ill' twice.

Chewbacca Sun 28-Jun-20 17:30:07

I expect that's why the Home Secretary has issued their latest statement.

kittylester Sun 28-Jun-20 17:31:43

2 Samworth sandwich factories have been closed along with 4/5 schools. I'm impressed with the response.

Leicester and Leicestershire are great.

EllanVannin Sun 28-Jun-20 17:42:35

Nothing surprises me any more.
In fact what does surprise me is that up to now not many food factories have been hit-yet- given the amount of workers who've kept these places going. Also considering that extra workers were flown in from Romania to help with the onslaught of extra packing because of demands in stores/supermarkets.

Illte Sun 28-Jun-20 17:45:26

A relative visited. We sat in the garden more than two metres. Two days later she had a cough and because extra mobile units had been drafted in was able to get a drive through test immediately. The result came through in less than 48 hours. She provided contact details. I was contacted that day.

The person I spoke to was very professional, said that the risk was minimal but that I should isolate. He asked if I had been in close contact with anyone else. Thankfully only my live on partner.

It was more than 14 days ago so I am 99% we are OK.

There is and will be much that could have been done better in this pandemic but if people just use everything as an opportunity to sound off then it all just gets lost in endless (and in this case unjustified) negativity.

We need to acknowledge what works well so that it can be copied and repeated. Covid should be our first concern rather than seeing it as a useful political device.

Well said, Illte
