Would you go?

I'm dithering. I have an appointment this week at my hair clinic. Not as vacuous as it sounds. Obviously hairdressers are closed at the moment and if I had hair, I wouldn't have dreamed of going during the pandemic.
However, I have no hair and I go every six weeks to have my hair system removed, my scalp conditioned and my system re-fixed.
They have medical exemption from closure due to the effect of hair loss on mental health.
I've been twice during the pandemic. They take my temperature and give me sanitizer on entry. I only see the girl who does my hair. She has her own room, uses plastic disposable capes, disposable towels, disinfects brushes and combs, wears a mask and visor. I wear a mask obviously. I've felt quite safe the last couple of times but with the new strain, I don't know what to do. What would you do everyone? I'm 71, no health conditions.

For myself, I’d go. I’ve been to the hairdresser and beautician since the easing of lockdown and it’s felt very safe indeed.

I won’t be going anywhere now, mind, as Scotland goes into lockdown again from midnight!

Thank you Sue. Sorry to hear about Scotland. I suspect we'll follow you shortly.

It sounds very safe, Kate1949, as my friend said, her hairdresser was operating very safely and allowing time between clients to sanitise but had to shut again - whereas when her DH went to the hospital it was not operating as safely as the hairdresser's.

I hadn't been at all because I heard my salon was not strictly adhering to the rules.

Iam64 Mon 04-Jan-21 15:41:58

go for it Kate, it sounds as safe as it can be.

Kate1949 Mon 04-Jan-21 15:43:05

Thank you Callistemon. I think I'll go. They are wonderful, caring people.

Kate1949 Mon 04-Jan-21 15:43:36

And Iam.

I would go if I was you. Sounds as safe as it can be.

I would go Kate it sounds like they have good safety measures in place. I have to go to the haematology clinic and was worried but the precautions were as you describe and I felt safe.

Kate1949 Mon 04-Jan-21 15:45:21

Thanks everyone. I'll go!

Berylsgranny Mon 04-Jan-21 16:06:41

I def would not go. This is surely going against all advice - sorry but this is truly important, your hair does not meet that criteria.

Sparklefizz Mon 04-Jan-21 16:12:28

Kate1949 If it's as safe as you say, I would go but it would depend how long you would have to be in there. If the process takes a long time, it's more risky unless you can ask them to have all the windows open for ventilation.

Berylsgranny Kate doesn't have any hair, so this process becomes a medical one.

Baggs Mon 04-Jan-21 16:13:24

If it has been ecided they should have a medical exemption due to the mental health side effects of your not getting this scalp conditioning and so forth, then I think I'd go in your place.

And clearly, berylsgranny, it is NOT going against all advice.

Lucca Mon 04-Jan-21 16:15:13

You should go in my opinion. If they are taking proper precautions I see no reason why not.

Kate1949 Mon 04-Jan-21 16:23:23

Thank you everyone. As I said, I've been a couple of times during the pandemic and felt safe. The process takes about an hour and a half but a lot of that time is me sitting alone in the room whilst the lady takes my system away.
Berylsgranny I understand what you are saying which is why I asked for advice. Of course hair isn't important and as I said, I wouldn't be going to a hairdresser if I had hair.
This is a very difficult situation. I'm not sure if you have any experience of hair loss?

Nannylovesshopping Mon 04-Jan-21 16:49:19

This treatment must have a strong bearing on your mental health, for that reason alone I would most definitely go.

Berylsgranny Mon 04-Jan-21 16:51:03

My sincerest apologies to you Kate1949, I did not read your post properly. I have now put my glasses on and hope you will accept my apologies. Yes of course you should go.

Kate1949 Mon 04-Jan-21 17:12:14

Berylsgranny No to worry. I often don't read posts properly!
Nannylovesshopping Thank you. It does indeed have a terrible effect on your mental health.

Nortsat Mon 04-Jan-21 17:35:51

Kate, as someone who is shielding, I have been advised to attend medical appointments.

As your Hair Clinic has been given medical exemption to remain open, I think it’s clear that your treatment is classed as ‘medical’.
It sounds sensible and safe to me. In your shoes I would attend, particularly as you have safely attended twice before, during the pandemic.

I hope the treatment goes well and helps you feel positive. ?

Kate1949 Mon 04-Jan-21 17:39:41

Thank you Nortsat.

Yes go, sounds safe. flowers

NanSue Mon 04-Jan-21 17:52:00

Yes do go, it definitely sounds safe to me and of course your hair is very important to you.

Me and DGS2 had to self isolate after he had his haircut as his hairdresser was diagnosed with coronavirus the next day. We were ok fortunately. They all have masks and visors and very clean. No one could have predicted it.

Trisha57 Mon 04-Jan-21 19:31:55

Definitely go. This is not a vanity issue, it is about your personal wellbeing and the place you are going to has obviously taken all the precautions necessary. To compare it to a normal "hairdressing" appointment is like comparing chalk to cheese.

Kate1949 Mon 04-Jan-21 19:59:20

No Trisha . This is definitely not a vanity issue. It's been a nightmare to be honest. Like I said, if I had hair I would stay away from hairdressers. If I don't get my system 'serviced' it will eventually come off. I am not prepared the be bald, even in my own home.
At the first lockdown I used to get cross with people complaining about not being able to go to the hairdressers. At least they've got hair.
Of course it's all relative isn't it?
