Exercising once a day?

Can anyone explain to me why we are only allowed to exercise once a day. I take my dogs out twice a day locally (in a very rural area) and avoid other people. What is the problem with this?

lemsip Tue 05-Jan-21 17:25:34

I think this is where common sense would come in to play!!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 05-Jan-21 17:35:48

The more folks stay at home the less chance of passing on or catching Covid-19.

The biggest problems are that foreign nationals are still flying into the country----are they all isolating for 2 weeks before mixing with the public ? I bet they're not !!

All flights should have stopped. What's going on ? Oz closed its borders, why didn't we ?

No problem, carry on.

DaisyL Tue 05-Jan-21 17:55:30

I will carry on, but I don't understand the rationale behind the once a day rule. Also don't know what foreign nationals have got to do with it. Australia is a much more isolated country with far fewer entry points. We have boats (and a tunnel) as well as planes. We may not be in the EU any longer but we have constant trade and interaction with mainland Europe.

Well, once a day could mean a walk lasting a few minutes, or a half day hike or long cycle ride.

I think the once a day rule is to stop people forever going out and back, umpteen times a day.

A couple of shortish dog walks, or a longer one and a shortish one later doesn't sound unreasonable as long as you're not meeting up with dozens of people !! Another case for common sense.

I’m out walking in the woods for an hour by 8.0am, this gets me going and energised for the day. Home for breakfast then house jobs. Walk down to town for supplies, lunch then out hiking for 2 hours on the moors. I’m told that I’m insufferable if I don’t get at least this amount of exercise every day. I would be dreadful if I was told to isolate as I’m incapable of staying in the house for more than 2 hours let alone 2 weeks.

MissChateline Tue 05-Jan-21 18:42:39

I would add to the above that I never see another person on my daily perambulations. So no danger to myself or others at all.

Witzend Tue 05-Jan-21 18:45:23

I’m sure it’ll only be a problem if you have Stasi-types living nearby, constantly twitching their net curtains to keep a gimlet eye on their neighbours.

If you do have such, I’d be tempted to give them a cheery wave every time I went out!

Miss Chateline You are allowed out for excersise and to shop, so you might get away with the first two, but not the 2hour walk on the moors. Surely it's a bit cold and snowy up there now any way??

Really? I'd say the biggest problem is all the British yoof pretending there is no problem at all and congregating.

Casdon Tue 05-Jan-21 18:52:06

It’s only for England isn’t it, we can have unlimited exercise outside in Wales?

BlueSky Tue 05-Jan-21 18:56:43

MissChateline my DH is very similar to you as regarding exercise. He’s suffering in lockdown, like you god help him if he had to isolate!

Chardy Tue 05-Jan-21 18:59:10

One of the scientific bods on TV said there's no point in shutting the airports now as we're in a worse position than everybody else, except South Africa. But yes, we should have shut them a long time ago.

Well you will have to put up with being insufferable, to say you are incapable of staying in the house for more than 2 hours let alone 2 weeks is ridiculous! The rules are there for a reason not to ignore and do what you like!
We are in lockdown! and have been told to 'stay at home'.

MissChateline Tue 05-Jan-21 19:17:49

Genty.......sorry but I will not put up with being insufferable neither will my partner. I would argue that looking after one’s mental health is as important and my walking and hiking alone, not seeing another person whilst I’m out is not an issue for me or for you. Incidentally I’m allowed to exercise once a day.....and with one other person.....it doesn’t say how long for. On Friday I will go for a day hike in the moors with a friend for at least 5 hours.
I’m prepared to do this keep healthy, both physically and mentally and unless you are twitching your curtains at 8am you wouldn’t know.

Cold , icey and snowy in West Yorkshire. Fabulous. Wrap up in layers and enjoy. The views of the hills and moors are stunning. This afternoon a rainbow as a snow shower came over. Best walks ever.

Jaxjacky Tue 05-Jan-21 19:35:04

MissChateline you are breaking the rules, as many do, your choice, but disappointing when so many others aren’t and they find it difficult too.

Cabbie21 Tue 05-Jan-21 19:40:55

I think Boris said exercise “preferably only once a day”. Common sense is needed here. If you can exercise without meeting anyone, it has achieved its purpose.

Mind you, there are risks in being out alone in icy conditions. Last week my daughter had a blackout when out running alone. Fortunately she was ok and not far from home. The mother of a friend fell when out alone and died as she lay in the cold too long, having hit her head as she fell.

MawBe Tue 05-Jan-21 19:45:02

There was a woman on WH this morning talking about nude hiking!
That ought to kill off the virus - and the hiker with double pneumonia! grin

cornishpatsy Tue 05-Jan-21 19:48:25

I think it is a case of using common sense. In highly populated areas if everyone is out all day it becomes crowded, remember the pictures of full parks and beeches where it was not possible to distance.

We all know our own areas and if it is safe to go out more than once.

Anniep1 Tue 05-Jan-21 19:55:28

I will continue to take the dog out twice a day - anything less is cruel and I hardly see anyone anyway. Every other dog owner I have spoken to says the same! I won't be going to the shop once a day, going to collect medication or caring for a vulnerable person (all essential reasons) so will probably be going out less than some other people.

MissChateline Tue 05-Jan-21 20:01:54

Please tell me which is more healthy, both physical and mentally.......sitting inside 4 walls all day and every day, getting very anxious, putting on weight, bored and stressed or heading off alone at 8 am through isolated woods, moorland and fields. Tell me that it isn’t better to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings, to feel good and to get the old endorphins going. Tell e that it isn’t great striding off across the hills with a flask and sandwich not seeing another soul. Tell me why it is ok in Scotland to have unlimited hikes but not ok in England. Which is not OK......2 shorter walks alone or one 5 hour walk with a companion.
Please can we rely on common sense and making personal risk assessments. I am not endangering you or anyone else. Please stop being so judgmental and please stop all the virtue signalling. I don’t sanitise my partner 3 times a day or bleach my shopping. I don’t quarantine my mail but I do follow guidelines when around others.
