Asian Lockdown

I said this in March. I've said it somewhere on here this week (and last week, and...)

Stricter coronavirus lockdown measures such as those enforced in Asia should be introduced in the UK to stop the spread of the virus, experts have reportedly suggested.

Stricter measures should include the closure of places of worship as well as compulsory mask-wearing in order to stop the spread of the new COVID variant sweeping across the country, several experts have said.

Anthony Costello, a professor of global health at UCL and a former WHO director, told the Mirror: “We are in a national crisis with a pandemic out of control.

“We should have no nurseries open, no synagogues, no churches, no mosques. We should have compulsory masks, two-metre distancing. We have to take this really seriously – that’s what Asian states did.”

According to the newspaper, his comments were echoed by Christina Pagel, professor of operational research at University College London, who has previously questioned the efficacy of the latest lockdown.

She told the Mirror: “We have to start thinking about mandatory isolation, like in China and Vietnam. We have lots of empty hotels. We could use that space.”

Ill mannered and ignorant comment.

I don't think China's figures can be trusted.

And I'm not sure we'd be too happy having our doors welded shut with us inside either.

China's policy would never work here.

The Asians have fared better due to other factors though. They aren't particularly touchy feely, they've been wearing masks for years and don't have the same obesity rates that we have. Especially the Japanese.

Totally different cultures.

Asian citizens are much more likely to do as they are told and not whinge on about their civil liberties when they are told to stay home or self isolate

Bore off, none of what we are having to endure is worth it

This makes no sense to me

They also had a very hard lockdown. And things there are back to normal. I have lots of friends in China. All living normal lives, OTHER than being able to fly back to Europe.

Of course, they have been getting the vaccine there for months, so even where there were pockets of virus, it is under control.

A couple of Brit friends there had the Sino vaccine in a sports stadium a few weeks ago. Thousands of people passing through a line of medics.

I have said all along we needed to lockdown properly. I still think it.

Biscuitmuncher Sun 10-Jan-21 21:36:48

Out of curiosity what would be a proper lockdown

Grannybags Sun 10-Jan-21 21:38:38

All places of worship closed, all nursery schools closed, all shops except food shops closed, dentists closed....that sort of lockdown

LauraNorder Sun 10-Jan-21 21:44:38

No one is forcing people in to places of worship. We are treated as adults and can choose to keep ourselves safe or not. We have to trust each other to be sensible and think of others. This is democracy in action, not perfect during a pandemic but at all other times I know where I’d rather live.

Grannybags you've never had toothache have you

Littleannie Sun 10-Jan-21 21:45:16

Dentists closed? I hope you are not serious Grannybags.

Biscuitmuncher Sun 10-Jan-21 21:48:12

You couldn't make it up could you

EllanVannin Sun 10-Jan-21 21:49:39

A proper lockdown Biscuitmuncher is doing as you're told.

The Chinese have worn masks outside for years because of the appalling air pollution, and that is probably why they did it during the pandemic.

We know where draconian enforced measures like those the Chinese imposed lead to, long prison sentences, disappearances and the brutal way they destroyed the Tibetan culture and are now doing to the Uihgurs.

To have a shut down like that in China you need a brutal dictator style government like the Chinese have.

Is that what you want?

MayBee70 Sun 10-Jan-21 21:57:01

I don’t understand why following the example of the countries that are now living normal lives can be such a bad thing.

I agree Ellan.

We may all judge China for its human rights horrors, but the fact of the matter is, they DID have a very harsh lockdown for 3 or 4 months BUT they now are back to normal with a very large percentage of them having had the vaccine.

LauraNorder, We are treated as adults and can choose to keep ourselves safe or not. We have to trust each other to be sensible and think of others. But we can see we CAN'T trust a fairly large percentage of the population.

M0nica Sun 10-Jan-21 22:03:07

Yes, but is because China has the kind of government that perpetrates human rights horrors that they can return to normal.

No, no and no again. I prefer to live in a democracy where I will not be tortured or killed for my religious or social beliefs.

Jaxjacky Sun 10-Jan-21 22:03:24

I wouldn’t like to see the same regime as some Asian countries, but I would like to see shops, other than supermarkets closed, enforced mask wearing in shops and exercise out of the house for one hour within a certain area, maybe 1 kilometre/mile.

Biscuitmuncher Sun 10-Jan-21 22:09:34

I shielded my mum and she ended up with Delirium in hospital for three months. My friend has followed all the rules and has been sectioned since the beginning of December so no I'm sorry I won't stop in

Missfoodlove Sun 10-Jan-21 22:11:32

Biscuitmumchers opinion is as valid as anyone else’s.

Chewbacca Sun 10-Jan-21 22:12:37

I agree with M0nica.

EllanVannin Sun 10-Jan-21 22:13:35

There is medication to control mental illness---there's no medication or a quick fix for this virus. Your choice !

Lucretzia Sun 10-Jan-21 22:15:08

Not back to normal at all

The restrictions implemented in Hebei this week are some of the strictest since the spread of Covid-19 stalled within the country in March.
Hebei’s capital city of Shijiazhuang has stopped passengers from going to its train station, suspended long-distance buses, and blocked major highways in the province, according to state media.
The increase in coronavirus cases in the latest Hebei outbreak indicates the virus has spread for a period of time, Feng Zijian, deputy head of China’s disease control center, said in an interview with state media earlier in the week.

The dentists were closed during the first lockdown in March
