China's policy would never work here.

The Asians have fared better due to other factors though. They aren't particularly touchy feely, they've been wearing masks for years and don't have the same obesity rates that we have. Especially the Japanese.

Totally different cultures.

Asian citizens are much more likely to do as they are told and not whinge on about their civil liberties when they are told to stay home or self isolate

They also had a very hard lockdown. And things there are back to normal. I have lots of friends in China. All living normal lives, OTHER than being able to fly back to Europe.

Of course, they have been getting the vaccine there for months, so even where there were pockets of virus, it is under control.

A couple of Brit friends there had the Sino vaccine in a sports stadium a few weeks ago. Thousands of people passing through a line of medics.

I have said all along we needed to lockdown properly. I still think it.

Out of curiosity what would be a proper lockdown

All places of worship closed, all nursery schools closed, all shops except food shops closed, dentists closed....that sort of lockdown

No one is forcing people in to places of worship. We are treated as adults and can choose to keep ourselves safe or not. We have to trust each other to be sensible and think of others. This is democracy in action, not perfect during a pandemic but at all other times I know where I’d rather live.

The Chinese have worn masks outside for years because of the appalling air pollution, and that is probably why they did it during the pandemic.

We know where draconian enforced measures like those the Chinese imposed lead to, long prison sentences, disappearances and the brutal way they destroyed the Tibetan culture and are now doing to the Uihgurs.

To have a shut down like that in China you need a brutal dictator style government like the Chinese have.

Is that what you want?

We may all judge China for its human rights horrors, but the fact of the matter is, they DID have a very harsh lockdown for 3 or 4 months BUT they now are back to normal with a very large percentage of them having had the vaccine.

LauraNorder, We are treated as adults and can choose to keep ourselves safe or not. We have to trust each other to be sensible and think of others. But we can see we CAN'T trust a fairly large percentage of the population.

Yes, but is because China has the kind of government that perpetrates human rights horrors that they can return to normal.

I wouldn’t like to see the same regime as some Asian countries, but I would like to see shops, other than supermarkets closed, enforced mask wearing in shops and exercise out of the house for one hour within a certain area, maybe 1 kilometre/mile.

The restrictions implemented in Hebei this week are some of the strictest since the spread of Covid-19 stalled within the country in March.
Hebei’s capital city of Shijiazhuang has stopped passengers from going to its train station, suspended long-distance buses, and blocked major highways in the province, according to state media.
The increase in coronavirus cases in the latest Hebei outbreak indicates the virus has spread for a period of time, Feng Zijian, deputy head of China’s disease control center, said in an interview with state media earlier in the week.
