Has anyone heard of the possibility that there may not be enough vaccine for getting 2nd doses within 12 weeks

I've just had someone mention this on social media. I can't find any information beyond this:

Oliver Dowden, the UK’s secretary of state for culture, has claimed the government is confident it won’t run out of the Covid-19 vaccine doses needed to give Brits their second jab, despite delivery delays.

And I can't say I have much confidence in what government ministers say.

I heard that they will prioritise second doses over new ones, which is reflected in the booking system.

My second is this Wednesday. Clinic rang me yesterday.

I found this.

It’s the main headline on BBC News MaizieD, I really don’t think this is something you need to be worrying about. The delay will be for younger people who haven’t yet had their first dose.

Only 8 weeks since the first one which was the end of January. This is Wirral.

I don’t really see the point of posting ‘something mentioned on social media’ then a link to a government statement saying the opposite. And I get that you don’t have much confidence in the government.
On the other hand, 30 million first doses have now been given, 57% of the adult population.

Dh is booked in for late April for his second, even though roll out has been slower in Scotland and is particularly poor in this area.

Blinko Sun 28-Mar-21 16:13:48

DH has just had his second jab, eight weeks after the first. Pfizer. I'm still waiting - AZ. Not at all concerned though.

I don't actually see the point of your response, either, Jaxjacky

When my DD had hers a few days ago she raised the question with the nurse dealing with her told her all the second doses have been accounted for apparently for the over 60s,how true it is I wouldn't like to say.

Smileless2012 Sun 28-Mar-21 16:27:29

No I haven't heard that, but that everyone who has had the first will have had the second out aside to ensure it's given within 12 weeks, and that is why there'll be a slow down for people receiving the first.

I’ve heard people expressing concern and can understand why they might feel that way. In this area, the GP hub started on second jabs yesterday. The mass hubs in the area have been doing under 50s all week. In general GP hubs didn’t book second appt. I’m not worrying but will be relieved to get tge second one. There are wide regional differences - people I know in London are getting 2nd Pfizer jabs after only 8 weeks.

Pantglas2 Sun 28-Mar-21 16:50:36

DH and I had our second Pfizer within 6 weeks but my dad hasn’t had his second AZ - it will be mid April for him exactly 11 weeks after first.

I’m more worried that those who refuse the offer of a jab will kibosh our chances of lockdown ending than I am about the waiting willing!

Do you trust rt.com as a source of information. Maizie?

I've noticed that people who had the Pfizer vaccine seem to get the second dose earlier than those who had AZ.
This may just be a coincidence.

I was told at my first I would be contacted with the date for the second 12 weeks later. This means I’m due the last week of April. My friend in Wales who had her first the week after me has just had her second 4 weeks later as hers was the Pfizer and mine was the AstraZeneca . So it think it’s different to area and whichever jab you had

suziewoozie Sun 28-Mar-21 17:02:00

I’ve just been doing the roughest of rough calculations. There are about 12m people in the top 4 priority groups. About 3 million have had second jabs - that leaves about 9 million to receive second jabs in next 6 weeks or so. As long as the supplies are there, there is certainly the capacity as demonstrated by ongoing daily rates. But as a pp said, not a lot of capacity perhaps for 1st doses - but that’s quite fair.

This is certainly the anecdotal pattern I’ve been aware of. I wonder if P supplies are less certain and so they are ( quite sensibly) using supplies on 2nd doses as they have them regardless of the time gap being shorter?

Liz46 Sun 28-Mar-21 17:05:18

I had the first Pfizer one over 8 weeks ago. Like Ellan, I am on The Wirral so hopefully may get the second one soon.

Kim19 Sun 28-Mar-21 17:08:11

My understanding is that second doses are already in stock and guaranteed. Not sure if the effectiveness of the first would diminish without the second. Anyone know the consequences?

I'm Pfizer, that's good to hear.

I have been a bit concerned because every single person I know can book their second jab online but I can't.

My first appointment was my Dr surgery ringing me, so I have to wait for them to ring me again.
I'm coming up 6 weeks since first.

suziewoozie Sun 28-Mar-21 17:20:40

Just there are lots of us in your situation - I think certainly the vast majority of those vaccinated at GP hubs. They are using a different system from the mass hubs which booked both and used the central, system.

Casdon Sun 28-Mar-21 17:31:31

That’s not true everywhere either suziewoosie, we can’t book our appointments online we get sent an appointment, and the mass vaccination centre in Wales I attended doesn’t book the second appointment when you have your first. I think that’s totally down to the local administration of the system.

I am confident though that the vaccine supply is secure for second doses, as they have stuck rigidly to the guidance in terms of vaccine order, and have already given second vaccinations to almost a third of those who have had their first here. No under 50s have been vaccinated unless they are in the clinically vulnerable category. I don’t think this is just my Health Board area, I think it’s the same throughout Wales.

suziewoozie Sun 28-Mar-21 17:33:49

Keep forgetting I should say in England - sorry.
