Apparently the travel advice to nearly 2 million people changed last week without any announcements or the public health bodies in the areas being advised. Surely if you are advising people not to travel outside the area you should let them know? Equally people should be advised they shouldn't travel in? These are specific areas where the Indian variant are most prevalent.

Where did you hear or read this Daisymae? Do you mean domestic travel or international travel? A link to the information would be helpful.

Peasblossom Tue 25-May-21 10:41:37

Are you in one of those areas Daisymae? My son is and has received advice both through the door and on public display screens, along with surge testing.

Urmstongran Tue 25-May-21 10:42:40

Do you mean areas that are high risk with the Indian variant such as Bolton etc? I assume so. Confining travel much as NS is doing around Glasgow.

Urmstongran Tue 25-May-21 10:44:54

Bolton.
451 cases per 100,000 at present.

FannyCornforth Tue 25-May-21 10:44:57

Yes, I heard about it on the Today program this morning.
I know that Leicester is one of the areas. It seems that Leicester has been in permanent lockdown.

Ilovecheese Tue 25-May-21 10:45:02

It was on the news this morning.
The councils are saying that the Government did not tell them about this new guidance until last night.
The Government are saying that they did tell them before last night.
Who to believe will, I guess will depend on who is perceived to be the most trustworthy.

No I'm not in any area

DiscoDancer1975 Tue 25-May-21 10:48:17

We heard this last week on the news! People shouldn’t go to areas where the Indian variant is prevalent. We wanted to go to Bedford, but won’t now. It was there....we heard it.

Toadinthehole Tue 25-May-21 10:52:49

Yes...we heard it too, last week. Boris himself said it somewhere. I think it was at a vaccination centre in Bolton. To me it’s common sense not to travel anywhere at the moment. Where I live in the Southeast, cases are going up again.

Daisymae Tue 25-May-21 10:54:09

Yes, but the public health officials are saying that they have not been advised!

Yes, but the public health officials are saying that they have not been advised!

I don’t know how that would work. All I know is....I knew, and as toad said, it’s common sense. We have to take responsibility for ourselves.

Peasblossom Tue 25-May-21 11:02:02

To be honest I find that a bit weird. I’m just a private individual but at the start of the pandemic I signed up for the daily updates from Government and I’ve received them daily ever since. Everything that’s issued comes into my inbox, most of which I delete without reading because it covers just everything!

It used to come in separate emails but now comes in one long email and you click on what interests you.

I’m pretty certain I got an “Additional Restrictions” email on Friday, but I’ll go back and check. How else would I have known and had a family WhatsApp conversation about it on Sunday?

The thing is, if me as a nobody, could pick up the information why couldn’t Local Authorities? Surely they must have signed up for the daily advice and information?

Yes, but the public health officials are saying that they have not been advised!

If they hadn’t been advised who was leafleting households and implementing public electronic signage?

Genuinely interested.

It’s here.

More detailed guidance was produced online but not communicated by the government. It will be an issue as the affected areas will need to amend their guidance and change their public messaging to reflect. I think it’s more likely that this was a government communication failure than a range of councils and public health leaders lying, I can’t think of any reason why they would do that as it’s their role to do everything they can to prevent spread.

jaylucy Tue 25-May-21 11:11:01

I live in one of the affected boroughs and there has been absolutely no information on this - nothing through the door, nothing on TV etc until this morning when I saw it on social media.
There has been absolutely nothing along the lines of "it would be a good idea if"

Chestnut Tue 25-May-21 11:12:07

I don't really know why people would want to travel overseas during a pandemic. They should go home and stay in their own country. A holiday is not a good enough reason for travelling between countries, it increases risk of spreading.

PippaZ Tue 25-May-21 11:25:11

Just watching BBC News and it went on the .Gov site on Friday morning but the areas say they were not informed - the government say they were.

This is from the NewStatesman daily email.

This guidance was published on the government website on Friday evening, but with no accompanying announcement. Four days later, local health officials, councils and MPs for the areas have reacted with anger at the lack of notice before, or indeed after, these changes, unearthed by the team at the Manchester Evening News. The government is now facing accusations that it has been trying to impose local lockdowns by stealth.

It goes on to say So what's going on? MPs this morning are baffled by the whole thing, with one noting that ministers would have needed to approve the changes, but the fact that it has blindsided even local Conservative MPs suggests that sign-off didn't happen, or that something went wrong. While some MPs are wondering whether the advice was in fact published in error, Downing Street has said that the press conference on 14 May about the Indian coronavirus variant, which didn't contain specific guidance beyond urging caution, effectively amounted to an announcement of these changes.

They also highlight the fact that Hounslow is "beside" Gatwick Airport. Many see Gatwick as being in Hounslow. I doubt this government will stop all the "meeting indoors" at the airport or "avoid travelling in and out of affected areas" including the airport.

The article also says that MP's are clamouring for answers about the way this advice has been issued.

This government seems to have truly perfected making a sow's ear out of a silk purse!

Did you even bother to read the thread, Chestnut? It's nothing at all to do with travelling abroad on holiday hmm

Boris himself said it somewhere.

That is hardly a trustworthy source of information grin

Doesn't the problem lie in there being no direct official notification and guidance to the authorities who would have to oversee the implementation of the guidance?

You would think that by this stage of the pandemic we'd have got over the teething troubles. Departments surely ought to be able to co-ordinate administrative details, like informing all the appropriate people, by now?

Daisymae Tue 25-May-21 12:03:58

jaylucy- that's very interesting, if people actually in the areas have little information how exactly is this supposed to have any effect??

Grannyboots1 Tue 25-May-21 12:12:27

I live in Bedford and wasn’t aware of the latest covid restrictions till I put the television on early this morning, and so the confusion goes on,

Didn’t know Gatwick had moved, thought it was in West Sussex! Heathrow is in the London Borough of Hillingdon,

EllanVannin Tue 25-May-21 12:20:27

When this has been on the news regularly surely common sense should prevail ? I wouldn't need to be told not to travel hither and thither for the simple reason I wouldn't anyway.

EllanVannin Tue 25-May-21 12:21:00

Do people have to have it spelled out now ?
