Unvaccinated Young Hairdresser: what would you do?

Perhaps the subject says it all?!

At the hairdressers' last week my hairdresser (early 30s, single), in passing, said she'd not been vaccinated as "it's not been tested enough". She had covid (mild symptoms) last year during lockdown and thinks she'll have natural immunity. She says she does regular LF tests...
None of the hairdressers in the salon have been wearing masks since they stopped being mandatory.

I feel stupid that I'd not thought to ask her if she'd been vaccinated; I'd assumed so for a variety of reasons.

My DIL says people aren't allowed into her salon unless they're wearing a mask (it's very trendy) and was told off once when she took off her mask a little longer than expected to have a drink!

What have you been doing about going back to hair salons? Those with mobile hairdressers need not reply! :-)

My hairdresser actually warned me not to go into her salon because she doesn't feel the stylists and manager are careful enough, so she comes to my house and cuts my hair in the kitchen with my windows open, both of us fully masked.

She caught Covid from an unvaxxed client and her PCR test was one of those sent to that dodgy lab in Wolverhampton and it came back negative, so she continued to go to work and inadvertently infected her husband, 3 children, both sets of parents and a few clients. All her clients' contact details had to be given to Test & Trace.

I would be very careful, especially with the Omicron variant doing the rounds now.

Ours wear masks and I had to take mine off briefly to have some highlights done last week. I know my hairdresser has been vaccinated but I don't know about the other staff. They leave the doors/windows open and wear gloves and it's very clean. I'm not sure what more they can do.

My hairdresser, and the customers, wear masks throughout. Didn’t think it would be possible to have hair washed with mask on, but hey yes it is. Where there’s a will there’s a way, many not willing to find a way though.

I've been back to the salon once. There are screens between each chair station.
I had to wear a mask all the time. I had to unhook it from my ear but hold it over my mouth while she cut the sides. I was told quite clearly what she wanted me to do.
I was given a coffee but it was in a disposable cup.
I don't know the vaccination status of all the stylists, there's a wide age range from teenage to my age. I've had both plus the booster and I'm sure my stylist said she'd had both.

I wouldn’t go there again, if she isn’t able to be vaccinated due to medical reasons I might rethink if all precautions are being taken otherwise I would cancel my appointment and tell the Manager the reasons.
My hairdresser went mobile because the other (younger) stylists refused to have vaccinations and the salon is an internal room, so no Windows, just an internal door to the Gym.

Unvaccinated Young Hairdresser: what would you do?

If you feel uneasy then don't go there, it would be better to find another hairdresser who take more precautions.

However, if you have been double vaccinated and had a booster then surely she is at more risk than you.

Grandmabatty Mon 29-Nov-21 11:08:19

I would find another hairdresser. Mine has perspex panels between chairs, everyone is masked and the towels etc are disposable.

BlueBelle Mon 29-Nov-21 11:15:51

Me personally I probably wouldn’t worry too much I have an unvaccinated friend and no idea who else’s company I m in who isn’t vaccinated but I can well understand how it would worry a lot of people and personally I think anyone working with the general public should HAVE to be vaccinated
I know I ve had all three jabs plus my flu one so I feel as protected as possible

choughdancer Mon 29-Nov-21 11:19:21

I went to one a while back, which is small and only has one customer at a time. Wore my mask throughout, as did the hairdresser, but hers was UNDER HER NOSE! I kept hoping she would realise; be reminded by seeing mine on; be reminded by seeing her reflection in the mirror. I was too cowardly to mention it, but still couldn't understand WHY! She didn't put it up over her nose at any point.

The thing is, you are not really allowed to ask, and if you do, they have not forced to tell the truth. Same in hsopitals, same in care homes, etc!!!

I had a similar issue, Northernlass. During a haircut a while back, my hairdresser (a stylist I had been going to a few years, in a salon I’ve been visiting for more than 20 years) mentioned that she had not been vaccinated. I was not happy so next time I phoned the salon to make an appointment, I asked for an appointment with any stylist who was fully vaccinated. They happily listed all the stylists I could choose from. I would not have returned to the same salon had the only option been an unvaccinated stylist. My new stylist realises it’s important to me and she is very particular to keep me as Covid-safe as possible while I’m there.

Oldnproud Mon 29-Nov-21 11:41:51

I wouldn't go back to a hairdresser who I knew was unvaccinated.

Mine still wears a mask. She would prefer her clients (mainly elderly) to wear them too, but many don't.

I always wear mine, for her sake as much as mine. Knowing that she is being as careful as she can to avoid either catching or spreading covid, I wouldn't dream of doing otherwise.
While she's washing it, or cutting near my ears, I just unhook the elastics from my ears and hold it in place with my hand.

maddyone Mon 29-Nov-21 11:44:00

My hairdresser doesn’t wear a mask any longer, but I know she’s been vaccinated. I imagine they’ll all have to wear masks again from Tuesday though. The lady who does my eyebrows at a different salon always wears a mask.

DiscoDancer1975 Mon 29-Nov-21 11:56:55

My hairdresser is also my friend, and has just recovered from Covid. The extent of this I hope to find out this week, when she comes to cut my hair. We both always test before seeing each other. She is vaccinated. She was just about to have her booster, when she caught covid. That was six weeks ago, so she may have had it now.

To answer your question...no, I wouldn’t go to a hairdresser who’s unvaccinated, no matter how bad my hair was!!

rosie1959 Mon 29-Nov-21 12:00:12

I would not ask any body if they had been vacinnated and they are not obliged to tell you anyway
My hairdresser has one person at a time I know her very well and know she has had all three vacinations plus catching covid (not from her job)
She wears a visor which I actually think are useless I no longer wear a mask but test before I go I would wear one if she asked

I left my regular salon a few months ago for precisely this reason. There was no PPE of any sort anywhere and no hand-washing. When I asked if my hairdresser (young, in her 20s) had been vaccinated she said, 'No. I'm not going to bother. I feel well enough'. Is it any wonder the numbers are still so high?

Aveline Mon 29-Nov-21 12:10:19

I walked out of a hairdresser lady year as it was obvious that mask wearing was not being adhered to. I'd only gone because my usual hairdresser was closed due to Covid. Needless to say I waited till my usual one was open again and cut my own hair after watching a YouTube video.

Last year!

How does she know who she caught Covid from or that the customer had not been vaccinated?

My hairdresser still insists on everyone wearing masks, customers and staff and also has plastic screens around each chair and the wash basins. In fact, the measures have not changed since the start of Covid ( no magazines, no waiting area etc) except that we are now being offered a drink - and obviously remove masks to drink! I feel very safe going there but there is still a risk as there is going anywhere.

Marydoll Mon 29-Nov-21 12:15:41

My hairdresser is vaccinated, as are all the staff. Staff and customers wear masks and there are perspex panels between customers.
The owner knows how vulnerable I am and always ensures that there are no other customers in the salon, when I am in. That is actually going above and beyond, as they have to make a living.
However, I do not go as frequently as I used to. Only when I am no longer able to deal with the washing of my thick hair, due to dexterity problems.

Ailidh Mon 29-Nov-21 12:18:31

I abandoned my previous hairdresser after she became very slapdash about masking - when she came in in the morning she'd pick up the mask she'd had on the previous day and which had been lying in (what looked like) a damply festering heap overnight. It usually drooped under her nose anyway.

My new one is a big salon, and all the staff are properly masked at all times, as I am, except when she's trimming round my ears, and then I'll let that one loop loose.

I wouldn't query anyone's vaccination status but if they volunteered it, I would not be back. Assuming they were half way through a treatment at the time - I'd wait until it was over then test for a week!

I hope it wasn’t my video Aveline, of my hair being cut by my husband ?. The most frightening thing for a while ?

GagaJo Mon 29-Nov-21 12:50:16

I wouldn't go to her.

I avoid friends that aren't vaccinated and let them know why. I appreciate they have the right to make their own choice, but I have the right to make mine in relation to not spending time with anti-vaxxers.

TillyTrotter Mon 29-Nov-21 12:53:59

I wouldn’t go.
I cancelled an appt. with my regular hairdresser as she wasn’t vaccinated (too young at the time) and stopped wearing a mask.
Now she is vaccinated I have made an appt. with her again. We should then both be wearing masks once again, not just me.
