I came across a reference to this today (can't remember where) and thought, I know that song.
Here's a link:

It's certainly a lovely song, and the guitar duet in the last 2 minutes is classic.
Why was it so significant at the time?

Released by the Eagles in the mid 70s, proclaimed as one of the most amazing guitar pieces ever, I have just read the lyrics and they don't seem to correspond to an actual event but to an drug induced state. Whatever, an amazing piece of music.

I also love the song, I believe it was an allegorical comment on the state of American politics/ economy of the time.
But then it could have been written in a drug haze!

My OH's favourite.

song is considered the most famous recording by the band, and its long guitar coda has been voted the best guitar solo of all time by readers of Guitarist in 1998.[3][4] The song was awarded the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1978.[5] The lyrics of the song have been given various interpretations by fans and critics alike, the Eagles themselves described the song as their "interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles".[6] In the 2013 documentary History of the Eagles, Henley said that the song was about "a journey from innocence to experience... that's all..."[7]

the cover is the beverly hills hotel
entire album is great

Is that the one where you can check in at any time but never check out? A great song.? It's playing in my head now.

'you can never leave' ah what memories that brings back. Love The Eagles. DH has loaded his I pod with all our lovely music from 780s 80s and some modern stuff - London Grammar is a bit reminiscent of the period but very modern too.

Now I know a bit more about it smile
The words are so cryptic, they sound like some of Bob Dylan's lyrics.

It's another great song from that era - love the Eagles.

Not a big Eagles fan but that song is summer parties in the 70s and dancing!

Tegan2 Tue 05-Sep-17 09:27:25

One of my favourites from that time; it was an era of great guitar riffs wasn't it;

one of the beauties of the internet is that I can now listen to whole albums from the past..Dan Fogelburg has a whole back catalogue that I can now listen to, but I think I'll listen to Hotel California while I clean the bathroom!

Much preferred Bowie to the Eagles.

Just listened to Layla and Song 2....agree about Bowie. Wish I'd been to see him when everyone I knew was going....

So many brilliant singers and groups in those days.
I'm probably a bit older than most of you, and I missed out on the 60s and 70s - too busy working and having a family.
I'm just catching up on it now.

MissAdventure Tue 05-Sep-17 17:13:55

I think the 60s and 70s were absolutely the best times for music!

I had the album for my birthday in 1976, the day after I gave birth to DS1. Years later I saw the Eagles in Birmingham. Great!
