On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits. Plus a few others who make an occasional entrance and departure and that is fine too - All Welcome.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.
Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra. I am sure both Four and Shirley will tell you their strategies.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

So Onward and Downward ? in 2020 and beyond folks. Come and join us.

tanith Wed 01-Jan-20 08:23:03

I’m with you NanKate my weight has crept up in the last 6 mths and needs to come off again. I also find portion control works for me and cutting out snacking in the evenings. So I will start today and hopefully come back with positive reports good luck to everyone.

Beechnut Wed 01-Jan-20 08:26:58

Another weight up creeper here. I-bought an exercise bike last month and use it most days. Portion control is my problem.

M0nica Wed 01-Jan-20 09:16:23

I fell off the wagon, when DH developed a medical condition, no weight gain, (except in the last fortnight) but no loss either.

Both of us are back on the straight and narrow on Monday there are some leftovers, like brandy butter and a part eaten pork pie that need to be consumed first, although a lot else has been put in the freezer.

NanKate Wed 01-Jan-20 10:02:51

A very big welcome tanith Beechnut and MOnica.

My tip of the day - mix all your cold drinks with water, it cuts down on the calories and now I can add half water half 7Up lemonade and it tastes quite normal. I even add it to white wine. ?

fourormore Wed 01-Jan-20 14:01:20

Hey! What a great start with three new members of the gang! Welcome to you all!
Along with NanKate and Shirley I am one of the three musketeers who have plodded on regardless, but it has also been nice that several others pop in and out.
We all encourage each other so much that we never feel alone and we are just as comfortable reporting a struggle as reporting a success!
My tip is not to tie yourself down to an overstrict regime - it is so easy to give in if, every morning, you are treated to a lettuce leaf and a cup of steam! grin
I do my best from Mon to Sat inclusive to be sensible (and I freely admit I frequently slip up!) but generally steer clear of cakes, puddings, biscuits, snacks etc.
I weigh myself every Sunday morning before I eat, drink or dress and record my weight on a graph on my laptop. As my scales are in pounds and decimal points of a pound even a loss of 0.2 of a pound shows on the graph and serves as encouragement! 0.2 of a pound is nothing weight-wise but it is a loss!!!
Sundays are then my SINdays when I will treat myself to biscuits, sweets etc. I don't go over the top but I find it makes it easier to 'decline' during the week knowing that I can sin on Sinday!
All our hints and tips are just our ideas - some will suit you - some won't, but the the greatness of this thread is the encouragement!
Onwards and downwards fellow losers! flowers flowers

Hello all, mind if I join you? I have been following WW for 6 months and have lost a stone in weight. I find their points system suits me best to keep options under control and to make mindful decisions regarding sweet treats.
I find fruit is my saviour but again have to remember it's not calorie free.
I have been going to the gym two or three times a week, however, we've now bought a treadmill and I aim to run for at least 30 minutes a day. Last year I followed the Couch to 5k so the 30 minute run is doable.
I have tried swing dancing too last year and loved it. I must make more of an effort to attend the classes as it's such a fun form of exercise.
Any tips, recipes etc would be so useful. I would ideally like to lose another half stone but I don't think it's going to be easy.I
Good luck to us all and happy New year.

M0nica Wed 01-Jan-20 17:50:33

Annapops you are right. The best way of making a satisfactory weight loss is to choose a system that suits you personally. At the end of the day I do not think that there is one solution that works for all. There is just the eating pattern that works for you.

WOODMOUSE49 Wed 01-Jan-20 18:45:36

I need you! Can I join in please?

I lost weight in the past by just sticking to a healthy diet with the right portions of everything. I also exercised regularly. Started it when I retired and a year later I'd lost 2 stone. However, it was through a local leisure centre who ran a weekly class for a chat, weigh and exercise session. No charges and no diet sheets etc. That was 8 years ago and weight stayed off for 5 years.

Having moved across the UK, my lifestyle is now completely different and I'd love to get back to the weight I was 8 years ago aged 62. That means me loosing 2 stone again.

NanKate Wed 01-Jan-20 20:13:49

Woodmouse you would be very welcome.

I realise that I have started snacking again on Rich Tea biscuits and walnuts, my absolute downfall.

Anyway we seem a good number to kick off 2020.

Onward and downward girls ?. Men are welcome too.

hulahoop Wed 01-Jan-20 20:21:21

I want to lose some weight this year we still have things to eat up so we have agreed oh and me to start next week ?

supergirlsnan Wed 01-Jan-20 20:24:52

I began a low carb diet in July and have lost a stone. It has been slow going, I had hoped to lose it quicker, however, it hasn't been too hard and I have had a couple of holidays and short breaks in this time where I have 'let go' a bit. Weighed myself today and have not gained anything over Christmas. I do a LOT of swimming, walking and gym but this does seem a diet that suits me.

CocoPops Thu 02-Jan-20 02:05:50

May I join in too please?
I want to shift a few pounds in the hope that it will ease my back pain as advised by physiotherapist. Aiming to lose 10% of my weight.

Shirleyw Thu 02-Jan-20 03:02:37

Morning. Dog woke me up so up in bed with a cup of tea ?.
I go to slimming world, I go to get weighed, maybe buy their magazine or a cook book then come on, I don't usually stay. lost 2 stone so far, at the moment, due to the festivities the weight has been up and down .
Low carb seems to suit me. If I do an SP week it can do wonders. Shall be kick starting on Saturday after weigh in with an SP week.
Welcome to all the new guys, great to see you.

Whiff Thu 02-Jan-20 07:42:36

I have lost over 7st in over 2 years. My advice please don't do diets. You need to re think how you view food. Before you all shout rubbish and she doesn't know what she is talking about. I started to put weight on when I was 8 am now 61. My late husband loved me and my weight was never an issue. Over the decades I have lost stones and put extra on. Why I finally decided to loss weight I got serious ill with jaundice due to tablets I was taking for long term illness. After my mom died there was no one depend on me anymore. Due to jaundice I lost 11lb. I couldn't do anything for 5 months. Had a lot of time to think. Wanted 3 things. Move house done. Get fit done and still doing it. Get to 11st working on it.
When I started this journey I finally realised it was a marathon not a sprint. I was 19st 2.25lb size 32. Now 11st 6lb size 16 could get away with some 14's .
What I realised was I have to be kind to myself and not get disheartened if I have a bad day. If I lost quarter pound a week I was happy. I stopped having foods that were my weakness in the house. Chocolate, hard cheese, ice cream and only rich tea finger biscuits no other sort.
I have done this on my own. I weight and measure all I eat and drink and count calories. I found if I set myself a time limit I fail every time. If it takes me a year to get to 11st so be it.
You have to find out what are your down falls and ways to cope with them.
It's not easy. You have to be brutally honest with yourself. Which is hard . I have been widowed for 16 years next month. Apart from my long term illness I have just been diagnosed with significant heart failure. As my daughter pointed out my weight didn't help me. But that was my choice and yo yo dieting can do more harm than good.
The last month my weight has been stable but am determined to get it going again. I love my exercise classes. Sit fit. I have balance problems so sit down for arm ones and hold on to back of the chair for leg ones.
I hope this has helped someone. Wore my first dress in 40years at Christmas.

NanKate Thu 02-Jan-20 08:24:48

Good to see the third member of the Club Committee Shirleyw back with us. HNY.

A friendly, supportive welcome to all the newbies.

Well done to you Whiff for losing all that weight. For myself I realised, like you, that I needed a healthy diet plan for life, not just a few months. We are all taking our different paths to a slimmer, healthier body and this is the place to find support, especially when our weight has gone up.

So as promised I have weighed my self today and I have put on 3lbs, which maybe doesn’t sound a lot but I have a very slow rate of losing weight, usually a quarter of a pound a week, also I have a non existent thyroid which doesn’t help. Anyway no excuses from me I am back on track.

Onward and downward ?

Annapops Thu 02-Jan-20 08:31:30

Great post Whiff. You have my admiration. Onward and upward everyone.

WOODMOUSE49 Thu 02-Jan-20 22:15:03

I love your post Whiff

It helps me to think I am sticking to a healthy way of eating with the correct sized portions. Then it becomes a 'diet' I can keep for ever more. My problem became that even though the meals were OK (healthy) it was the snacks in between (I bake) and the lack of good exercise. I have physical work to do outside when weather is good but it doesn't burn the calories.

First weigh in tomorrow morning. I'm tempted to weigh myself every morning. I only did it once a week those years ago when I lost 2 stone over the year.

How often do others weigh themselves?

I've started to walk Mya (rescue dog I've had for 8 months) for longer periods. What exercise do you find time to fit in?

Shirleyw Fri 03-Jan-20 04:01:40

I get weighed once a week and leave it at that as a rule.........just ocassionally I may pop on the scales mid week to have an idea but usually wait till weigh in....a few years back I weighed daily, just to keep tabs....that isn't a bad thing either. I know some people say not to weigh daily but alongs one doesn't get obsessive about it.
I walk a lot, I like to do 12-14000 Plus steps daily. In the week that's very doable for me but weekends it's more effort to reach that goal .
I used to go to Pilates but I found it a drag having to go out again in the evenings to do it.

Whiff Fri 03-Jan-20 07:07:02

Because I have been taking my time losing the weight I have become obsessed by weighting myself. I do it every day but only count what I weigh on a Sunday morning . I always weigh myself naked. Forgot to say I have lost 8" from my bust, 12" from my waist and 15" from my hips. My children tell me inches are as important as weight.
How I got into excercise , when I was 15st 7lb I decided to get fit. I googled over 50s excercise where I used to live. Age UK run a community fit club it was 12 weeks and free. First hour we talked about nutrition and had exercises for a hour. It was a mixed group sex and age. Always laughed during it. After 2, weeks I started to do 10 mins at home and after a few months 30 mins a day. I even brought 2 500g dumbbells and a light strength resistance band which I enjoyed using. When I moved in August I found the sit fit group. It's £5 for 45 mins. Sit afterwards and have a drink and natter in the cafe before we go our separate ways. Due to my health haven't been doing exercises at home since October but today I am starting again but just doing 10 mins and build up over the coming weeks.
I found I enjoyed the exercises never thought I would. Hope this has helped.

Shirleyw Sat 04-Jan-20 16:00:20

OK, another 3lb on....was expecting a gain but not 3 again...still, i am now officially back on the wagon....like many others lol....
Next week the scales should show a decent loss....

Hows everyone doing?

Beechnut Sat 04-Jan-20 16:10:28

I HOPE to be coming in on a Monday morning with weight losses as like Whiff I weigh everyday but it is Monday morning that I record.

fourormore Sat 04-Jan-20 16:43:45

Whiff you and I share our weigh-day and method of weighing grin
Since I had my new bathroom mirror put in, there has been a fat woman looking at me every time I go into the shower?
I am expecting her to still be there tomorrow morning!!!

Shirley I am expecting the worst tomorrow morning as this week has been catching up with folks we didn't see over Christmas as we were away - and of course, the lethal using up of stuff left hmm
Isn't it great to have new members of our elite gang!!!
If members weigh on a certain day of the week (obviously whichever days suits them) we could encourage each other a bit more?
I'll start the list but obviously no pressure on those who prefer to weigh monthly or intermittently - this thread is all about doing whatever suits each individual!
Sundays = Whiff and me! (Fourormore)
Mondays = Beechnut
Fridays = Woodmouse?
Good luck to everyone flowers as we continue our trudge!

Shirleyw Sat 04-Jan-20 16:51:07

Good idea *fourormore...my day is Saturday now, used to be wednesdays but changed group...its handy as they start weighing at 8.15 am so any plans on a Saturday dosent get disrupted. Also, you can get weighed at any SW so thats handy.

NanKate Sat 04-Jan-20 21:59:27

Off my food as I have pleurisy, however I bet I won’t lose anything. Doc says I should be back on track in a few days.

Well we seem to have kicked 2020 off in a very positive manner.

Onward and downward ? all you lovely losers.
