Social Dancing

I used to think I had two left feet and couldn't dance. My partner wanted to take up social dancing so that when we were on holiday we could join in with the dancing and I knew that I need to take up some form of exercise, so we enroled at a local class. I am amazed that since last October we have learnt to dance quite a few dances and really enjoy the lessons. Not only that there are wekend social dances run by Mike and Rose, the teachers and dance weekends twice a year. Our social life has really opened up, the people are all very friendly and make us feel so welcome. I would recommend taking up social dancing to every one regardless of age. It really is fun and a good way of meeting new people. Is there a 'local to you' area on this site that I could post up the details if anyone wants them.

I have often thought I would like to do this, barboofa but isn't it difficult if you don't have a partner? I wouldn't want to turn up like Billy no mates and become a spectator, or even worse, someone to take pity on smile

My husband is a 'real' dancer as in he's been dancing since he was 13 and has trophies. I have two left feet so I was really worried when he introduced me to dancing. It's the best thing I ever did. At first I was really self concious but other dancers are lovely and many said that I should remember that no one is born being able to dance and even they still make mistakes (they just manage to hide it lol).

As barboofa says it's wonderful exercise and you meet some lovely people.

Where do you go barboofa? We've been to some in North Lincs. There is very little going on in East Yorkshire to my knowledge. We have looked but if anyone knows better please let me know. We don't go to lessons because my husband is also a qualified dance teacher (I'm so lucky). If you're single then dance classes are a good option because they will make sure you have a partner.....you won't be the only one there alone.

I forgot to mention that there are lots of dances in South Yorkshire and I know there is one in Riccall near Selby once a month.

I wouldn't mind having a go but like nightowl would feel very self conscious turning up alone - I don't know if there is one in my area anyway.

The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society welcomes people of all ages, without or with partners/friends, all over the world. It's a great way to exercise and to make new friends.

I used to be a member. I loved Waverley. But my favourites were the strathspeys.

Good to know that you're happy taking dancing lessons. I know you'd not only enjoy but cherish it because dancing is such a thing that not only make you physically stronger but a talented person too.
