SPELLING

I have always prided myself on being a very good speller English language and literature have always thought of myself as proficient but recently I have had to resort to dictionary (can`t remember how to use Spellcheck) and tonight I`m cross with myself that I couldn`t spell "idiosyncrasy" had wanted to use "phenomenon" but same result. Am I alone in finding my spelling is not what it used to be???????????????????

I do find myself double checking spellings. Often this is because the device I'm using wants to edit everything for me and likes to Americanise things, but also because I just prefer to get it right and am not always confident that I can remember correctly. I think the art of looking up spellings is being lost. Good for you - Sparkygran - you care!
There is a good article in the Daily Mail about correct word usage - called The Pedant's Revolt. It is quite informative and funny.

I can usually tell when a word looks wrong and if it looks wrong, it usually is! My Google spell checker seems pretty good and the Android checker on my phone and tablet also works well.

I am just the same sparky. I used to be able to spell most words but now even relatively simple ones can be difficult at times. I keep a dictionary very close to hand and of course due to my age actualy know how to use it !

I think what happens is that all the wrong spellings one sees and all the publications where spellchecker has been allowed to take charge leave even good spellers confused. When I was teaching and came to the thirtieth exercise book with 'thier' it looked absolutely fine.

I'm the same too sparky!
I just seem to have lost confidence in my spelling ability, which has always been excellent.
I have a dictionary with my laptop, and if that fails then it's Google!

I'm the same, and I put it down to not actually writing as much these days (as opposed to typing).

When you physically write a word, the old 'knowledge' seems to kick in and you know instinctively if you've spelled a word right, but when you type it your brain doesn't go through the same process. Even though I typed throughout my working life, most of the time I wrote in longhand as well, but I hardly ever do now...

Glad it's not just me! I used to be good at spelling, but had dreadful trouble with haemorrhoid at work recently - spelling only, I am happy to say. grin

Thanks Ana! Your theory makes me feel much better. I now know that it is the computer at fault and nothing to do with my brain. Was it Pooh Bear who proclaimed that he was a good speller but just got the letters in the wrong order ?

I find it rather depressing that 50 years after leaving school I am still haunted by the same dodgy spellings. Surely by now I ought to know whether it's stationary or stationery by now!

Lona Wed 07-May-14 22:15:48

Deedaa That's easy....... It's stationAry...soldier standing to Attention
and stationEry.... e for Envelope

grin

Elegran Wed 07-May-14 22:18:22

A cAr can be stationAry, but papEr is stationEry.

annodomini Wed 07-May-14 23:00:56

A stationEr sells stationEry.

Lona Wed 07-May-14 23:04:01

Phew! Glad that one's sorted grin

I seem to have lost the ability to write words correctly, perhaps because I type mostly nowadays. Having messed up a couple of greetings cards by writing words such as 'congratulations' or people's names incorrectly I find I write quite carefully and slowly now, although I used to be a fast scribbler! They are too expensive to waste.

Hope your hemmerhoyds are shrinking, WhenIwasyourage! grin

Station Arry spends all dat leaning on his broom.

NfkDumpling Thu 08-May-14 08:33:45

Day - not dat!

That's a good article Rockgran. Brought back school days. I could almost hear my old English teacher screaming "There's no such word as 'got'"! (Used a lot in 'Norfick')

feetlebaum Thu 08-May-14 08:49:12

He obviously for-got that that 'got' does exist, while I had for-gotten that we don't say 'gotten' in Britain, as they do in the USA...

Gotta go now...

sparkygran Thu 08-May-14 09:28:17

Phew glad I got that sorted out. Ana I like your theory and feel there is probably some truth there. Rockgran you are right about me caring but perhaps methinks I care too much!!!!
