.......to come, the Sunday papers tell me - and this in spite of evidence that many free schools are failing and that academy status does not raise standards any quicker than in normal schools.

This is just political dogma.

Yes - so much policy is an evidence free zone.

The chief area that concerns me about academies is that they do not have a legal obligation to employ teachers with QTS as state schools do. While I appreciate that some subjects such as music, art perhaps can be taught very well by musicians and artists who would hopefully inspire with their love of their art and would not necessarily need to be qualified teachers, this does not apply with most subjects. The education budget, although ring fenced in theory, is not taking account of rising pupil numbers so surely the budget per pupil is going to be reduced. Thus, we will see headteachers facing a reduced budget and employing cheaper unqualified teachers, or newly qualified teachers, making experienced senior subject staff too expensive, and luxuries such as music tuition available only to those able to pay.

Does this not apply to normal schools too? The possible falling budget perhead, and unqualified teachers?
Not that I agree with academies, becuase on balance, I dont think that I do.

Another good reason to decamp to Scotland! They exported Gove and kept their education system; and they also have their own justice system.

I would place a small bet that not only will the academies continue to be able to employ teachers without qualified teacher status but that eventually they will be allowed to be selective too. It hasn't been suggested but it is my nightmare!

The budget constraints will apply to all schools and colleges soontobe.

I have reported the above as an advert - but it is quite funny really. Would you employ someone who is so illiterate to write an essay for you!!! grin

post reported.

This initiative is a disaster for the english comprehensive system. These schools no longer have the backing of a local education authority. Instead they rely on a motley collection of charitable trusts that were set up in a hurry.
I have seen myself he disastrous effects of forced academisation on a steadily improving school. To cut a long story short instead of improving (50% A-cs including English and Maths) it has plummeted to 25% for the last 2 years, due to mismanagement of a difficult event by the "academy sponsors".
All the effort that had gone into improving the school was squandered.
Free schools (and some academies) don't have any sponsor - just a governing body set up by the folk who started the school. If the proverbial hits the fan the only place they can go is the Department of Education.
The people of Scotland and Wales should count themselves lucky.
