How much is your grand kids school uniform ?

Sounds cheap to me. My GD is at a state secondary school (Academy) and I paid £68 for a blazer and coat this week. Then there are regulation skirts, jumpers, white blouses, PE kit and school bag, all from the uniform shop in town. Must be about £150-200 before shoes, which were another £40.

What about school shoes/coat/ games and PE kit etc?

My two youngest GC start school this Sept. And the costs have been about the same as for Amanda's GS. The supermarkets do a great job these days. Much cheaper than it was for my children from the uniform shop.

My daughter doesn't like the idea of uniform for infant School but I think it's a great idea. At these prices it's cheaper in the long run and will save the discussions with DGD over what she is going to wear. I am usually the one getting them ready when Mum is off to work.

Their shoes don't come cheap though. They both have exceptionally narrow feet particularly at the ankles. Ordinary plimsolls just fall off- not good when they are running! They ended up with Startrite ones £23 pounds in the sale. They have two straps which help to keep them on.

I don't object to school uniform it stops school being a fashion parade for those whose parents can afford designer clothes. I object to state school uniform being in fancy colours. Braided blazers etc, which cannot be bought at standard school uniform suppliers and cost a lot more than they need to.

My DD bought my GD's uniform yesterday and rang me ,shocked at the cost. Blazer, one jumper, two pleated skirts and a tie £82. The white blouses can be bought from a chain store and shoes just have to be sensible.She has hand-me-down PE kit from a friend. She is a single mum now but her H is paying half as they don't have a hassle over money,but how do some parents manage?

My grandchildren don't wear school uniform, being little Americans. Perhaps America has some good ideas .

I do think though that schools should be made to have to agree that parents can buy unifrom from a high street and not a pre determined uniform shop.

Who is going to make them, Soon? Academies and Free Schools are answerable only to their Academy Chain and Free Schools to their sponsors.

I am not up to date with Academies and Free Schools.

Organisations are subject to the law of the land.

So I am unsure whether the government could impose this or not.
But since they didnt when it was mainly local authority schools, they are even less likely to now.

A new law banning all school uniforms? Independent schools, grammar schools, Academies, Free Schools, LA schools - no, I can't see that being a priority for the present government.

Imagine Cameron introducing a law saying you could only buy uniform in chain stores. M and S would have to stock top hats and morning coats for Eton and boaters for Harrow

Have just had a look at DG's uniform for the sixth form, an eye-watering
£85.95 for the jacket and £40.95 for the trousers. The tie comes in at only £6.95 so that's a relief!!!!!!
Better polish the credit card.

Fortunately my DGD has no school blazer to purchase and the only items that display a school badge are fleece jackets, £12, cardigans and jumpers £7.

Her uniform has changed to black from grey and has been purchased easily from charity shops and stores.

New shirts from Aldi 2 for £1.99 .
New polos from a shop 3 for £5.
Shoes from Shoe Zone and Asda £9.99 a pair. ( same style as last year, leather and lasted very well until new size required).
Black sweat tops £3 each from local shop.
Trousers for winter £4 a pair Asda.
Black coats 1 from Asda in the sale £4 the other in the sales from H&M £6.99.
Socks, wherever they are a good buy.
Tights from local market £2 a pair, known excellent quality and wear.
Oddses from charity shops

I have no issue with cost equates to quality as all purchases are of a good, washable quality and I am a good shopper and know what constitutes hard wearing, good to iron quality material.

I admit we are perhaps lucky to have such a sensible school uniform policy and I know how much some school uniforms that are bespoke can cost.

Amanda64 that sounds about right for my GS uniform,omitting any shoes as his last ones were new. Tesco/Asda/M n S do a good range of school clothes, we just have to buy the jumper form another shop as it has a emblem on.and tie at around £2-50 I think it's good value and I am all for school uniforms, I'm darn sure it would cost a lot lot more if no school uniform, especially with fashion conscious kids, where a pair of fashion shoes can cost anything around £50 , I can buy the whole uniform for that.

Of course once they move into high school the cost escalates as they then start with Blazers, and various things, but I think they can still bought at a reasonable price.

Many yrs ago there was only one shop! in the town who stocked the school uniforms, they must have made a killing! as they had the monopoly, it was such a relief for parents when other stores were allowed to start stocking the uniforms.

I can only assume that Juliette's GC goes to a very posh private school. I don't pay that much for my "best" clothes. Two of my GC go to 6th form college in Sept and they wear anything they like. They are treated as students not schoolchildren anymore.

DDs sixth form had no uniform. Eyewateringly expensive to have no uniform when it's 17 year olds.i thought they might do with what they had for uni. I must have had fluffy little blue birds instead of grey matter.

Grand son will wear the £4 plimsolls all year however other gran kids want leather shoes to expensive for me

A child can't wear £4 (or even £44 ) plimsolls all year round.
That is plain silly. Is this yet another version of the Shoe Zone saga?
I had thought it might perhaps be a genuine discussion on the relative price of school uniform.

Well, to be fair the OP just offered a statement, and didn't seem to be looking for a discussion...

Although I have just realised that the thread title has proved me wrong there!

The answer is that I have no idea, their parents buy it, not me.
