NannyDee we have looked after our grandson since he was born every Sunday. We love him to bits and when his time comes, as it will in two years as he has just gone in to sixth form, we will miss him as much as his parents will. He only lives down the road so when his mum had to work late he came to us from school as well.

I really feel for you, and anyone with empty nest syndrome and all that. I know I will feel the same. When my 3 boys went to University it felt like all the laughter had gone with them. The house felt empty. Now we have to do it all over again.

The only positive is that they are launching themselves out in to the world and have all these adventures to look forward to. Homesick (mine were not) might be a problem but they will get over it when they learn to look after themselves and make new friends. Perhaps I taught them well, cooking, cleaning, ironing, shopping anyway. At least I knew they would not starve.

Nothing to do with grandchildren, but a friend of mine was seeing her 18 year old son off for a university interview. She had only been a teenager when he was born and was still pretty attractive so when the train was pulling out the other lad inthe compartment said "Wow, your girlfriend's a bit of all right!" She thought it was hilarious when he told her but he was appalled grin

No, he's not, please don't get the wrong idea of him, he helps me out a lot. It's just we are both from different times and it is showing now, both ready to go our own ways, which is the normal thing to be doing at this time. smile

He can't be all bad, not if an animal loves him.

I've told my DS that he can't come home for the first month at least. He has to get used to it. And I told him I don't want him home for Christmas, he will be home a couple of weeks earlier, when he goes to a concert nearby with his mat and we will go out for a meal etc then. He is an atheist and has made Christmas awful for me for the last few years, him being a non believer and me wanting to enjoy the religious side of things. So he can stay at Uni or go and stay with a friend.

Good luck to all the ones going/gone and chin up to mums, dads and grandparents. It's my little doggie who will miss my DS the most, she pines for him if he even goes out. sad

Old fashioned rules in my Uni. Hall of residence, we were not allowed an 'Exeat' permission to go home, for the first term. How things have changed, I don't think anyone would stand for it now. But at least you had to get over homesickness!

Oh, they do! I remember my DS coming home every weekend for...oh, two weekends, then we didn't see him till Christmas grin And when he went back after that he was shocked when I burst into tears on the doorstep (well, he was my youngest, and my baby).

One of my friends dropped her son off at Uni, then drove home to find him sitting on the doorstep - he didn't like it so he'd caught the train back!

Yes exciting but nerve wracking times. . . This is what they've worked for and we've supported them to do. We've given them wings and now they must fly (sob!)

They will love it! I found my GS grew up while he was there - now on his last year of an engineering PhD - all goes so fast. The first week will be exciting with not too much in the way of work.

Makes you feel old doesn't it!!!
Our granddaughter is also off this weekend and like you NannyDee we are so proud. She is the first of our GC to reach that milestone bless her, and has also conquered all sorts of crisis points. Good luck to all our GC!!!

We have just been to see our GS and say good luck to him as he is off to Uni tomorrow. He is, understandably, nervous about going but also looking forward to it. We are so proud of him, he has battled health issues, is coping well with type 1 diabetes and worked so hard to get good A level results. Good luck to any of your GC/children who are also taking this big step.
