I think it's probably one of the hardest topics to get to know each other very well. So I wondered if people wanted to share a bit about them? Nothing personal and identifying.

Yennifer is a character from a TV series I like. I'm a big reader and I love fantasy fiction. I love Terry Pratchett, I also love The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. TV I love Doctor Who which starts soon yay! Basically anything fantasy. I think books were my salvation growing up so I've always loved different worlds to escape into. I have 5 children, all living at home currently, most of my friends are already grans. I'm also a teaching assistant and I absolutely love my job, it's so rewarding but not the best pay sadly. Oddly in my field I meet a lot of other adults who have strained relationships with their parents and I wonder if that drives them to be a positive rolemodel for kids. I'm estranged as most of you know, my mother was a cruel, neglectful and uncaring person and nothing I ever did was good enough for her. Leaving that relationship was very hard but very freeing. Estrangement for a while was a big part of who I am but less and less as time goes on. I love cardigan weather and exploring old ruins is my absolutely favourite thing to do. I'm probably a bit of a hippy really x

Would love to know more about you x x x

QuaintIrene Sun 02-Feb-20 19:23:05

My great great niece has your name, Yennifer. I hadn’t heard it before. I think I know where they heard it from now ?

Yennifer Sun 02-Feb-20 20:25:13

It's such a beautiful name QuaintIrene isn't it?

QuaintIrene Sun 02-Feb-20 21:24:17

It is. And it suits a quirky, independent clever girl !

Ironflower Mon 03-Feb-20 04:54:41

I love fantasy fiction as well. David Eddings and Laurie Forest are some of my favourites. I haven't yet read the Witcher series (hoping to soon) but am loving the TV series. Husband and I are both nerds lol and do love Star Wars, board games even dungeons and dragons as well :-)

HolyHannah Wed 05-Feb-20 05:09:33

My username is an expression of happy surprise or excitement. Like, "Holy Hannah that was an amazing movie!"

I'm not a big fan of The Doctor, but I am a huge Captain Jack/Torchwood fan.

David and Leigh Eddings and their books are among my favorites. I like Terry Brooks as well.

People often say how great I am with kids so I guess my abuse came to one good end. I try to lead by being a role-model and not just a, "Do as I say! Not as I DO!"

Yennifer Thu 06-Feb-20 14:42:20

Ooh I so get your name now HH. So good to meet other fantasy fiction lovers! I also love David and Leigh Eddings. I am friends with Tad Williams which is very cool and love his books. Memory Sorrow and Thorn are spectacular! I'm also friends with Raymond E Fiest who is a very strong character lol

HolyHannah Thu 06-Feb-20 15:28:48

Yennifer -- I was like, Tad Williams... Why is that name familiar? Went to book-case, "Ahhh I have the series Memory, Sorrow and Thorn..." LOL Time for another read of it I guess.

It's a pleasure to meet all of you- Coffee, not tea- smile
My husband taught me to play boardgames that I no way ever thought possible because the rules were so freaking complicated, but he was patient- I'm a private person .. smile

Yennifer Thu 06-Feb-20 21:05:10

I'm not at all a.private person, I spend a lot of time telling myself to please just shut up lol x

rosecarmel Thu 06-Feb-20 22:05:25

Oh I wasn't always .. smile

Friendliness in the US is different one state to the next- The state I live in currently, friendliness means keep to yourself- If I don't say hello, others won't- If you're not part of the family fabric that's been here for generations .. ?

When reading online reviews about the area I live in, they're pretty much all the same as I described! And written by the same people I described above!

But it's pretty .. smile

I think it's sad that more don't/haven't shared here the origin/meaning of their username and share even a small detail of their personality, like book choices...

I love to share my commonalities with people.

rosecarmel -- I have lived in/visited many places and understand completely. "Friendly" is absolutely subjective to region/environment. In some places the idea of NOT hugging and 'double cheek kissing' upon greeting is considered 'rude' to, "Never touch a 'stranger' but acknowledge each other respectfully." like 'bowing'/saluting etc. is NORM and touching is considered rude/intrusive.

I try to 'middle ground' by 'doing Roman' AND respecting my own beliefs and personal boundaries...

Sometimes there is nothing to share Holyhannah ?
I like bluebells ..........you could read into it that I m always blue (unhappy) and hang my head in shame but there’s no depth to it I m afraid I just like flowers

sodapop Mon 10-Feb-20 08:52:27

I think there was a thread about this some time ago BlueBelle interesting to know what prompted our names, you are now the flower lady in my mind.
HolyHannah I guessed it was an exclamation but didn't know the origin. I love reading too but not science fiction/fantasy
My name is shared with my much loved JR who is 15 now and still bossing us around.

Mine is simply Manx for the Isle of Man where my mum was born and where her mum and family are buried. I love the island and as a family we spent many happy holidays there over the years.
My cousin took me on some fabulous drives in later years when I was there and the whole of the island can be visited in a day with the most spectacular scenery " on the doorstep ".
Sadly my cousin died suddenly and his wife died 12 months later last September so a large chunk of my past has gone. He'd done a lot of our family tree for which I'll be forever grateful.
The nearest blood relatives of my mum are in New York and New Zealand, from her dad's second marriage.

GrannySomerset Mon 10-Feb-20 11:33:33

DGD1 had a Granny Suffolk (now sadly not with us) so I became Granny Somerset. Simples!

knickas63 Mon 10-Feb-20 13:19:32

Yennifer - you are me!
I have 3 kids, 5 grandchildren and I have been married for 36 years this year (together for 40 - still in school uniform at the time) . No estrangement in my immediate family - although we had a major falling out with a niece (who was more like a sister) and her family. That did, and still does hurt. I wanted Knickers as a name somewhere - but it was taken - so Knickas is was.

rosecarmel Mon 10-Feb-20 18:27:45

My book choices are listed in the Fifty Books or Fewer thread/s- smile

I just finished Talking To Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell- I enjoy his books, each worth rereading- Strangers is his latest-

I love non-fiction and southern authors of fiction or non- Also California fiction and New England-

Politics, law, economics, architecture, history-

Yennifer Wed 19-Feb-20 17:36:03

I think I should read more non fiction , I haven't really given it much attention. Will look into it x

Smileless2012 Wed 19-Feb-20 18:32:41

I first came to GN when we became estranged from our youngest son. I used to smile less but smile a lot more nowsmile.

Oopsadaisy3 Wed 19-Feb-20 19:02:06

Hi there, my name is because of saying S**t when I did something stupid. The the GCs were around so I would quickly say oops a daisy. Under times of stress my first go to word is still S **t. Some things never change.....
I’ve been married for 49 years and I’m retired, I was a Credit Controller, so I can get money out of people if necessary, which is a skill I don’t seem to need very often nowadays.
Parents and brother all dead, lots of cousins but none close to where I live.
I read, lots, I love Anne Rivers Siddons, Anita Shreve and anyone whose story can keep me entertained.
DH is soon to retire although he’s been saying that for a while.
I sew but seem to be all fingers and thumbs lately. I’m doing the family tree and love Star Trek.
I look after DDs dog 2 days a week, I’m an introverted Leo, but talk to me about something I’m interested in and I’ll talk my socks off.
That’s about it. Good to meet you all

Yennifer Wed 19-Feb-20 19:13:50

Always good to smile more Smileless2012. Love the name Oopsadaisy. I miss swearing, there really isn't a good alternative to vent sometimes x

Smileless2012 Thu 20-Feb-20 10:28:57

I know what you mean about swearing, sometimes it helps get rid of some of your anger and frustration doesn't it.

You're right Yennifer, it's always good to smilesmile.

Smileless2012 Thu 20-Feb-20 10:31:42

I had a job as a credit controller too Oopsadaisy some of the 'reasons' for non payment would really stretch the imagination. Not dissimilar for reasons given for not having homework to hand in at schoolgrin.
