What is this forum for?

I’m new here. Is this forum for parents and grandparents of estranged adult children, as in they’re the ones who walked away, or is this for those children to tell us how awful we are, or both? Thanks.

It's for both DHH. Although originally started for estranged parents and grandparents and predominantly used by them, the support thread is for anyone whose life has been affected by estrangement and there are various threads which cover the many aspects of estrangement.

I thought I recognised the name

Welcome DHH7 - this forum is for the estranged and the ‘estranger’ , although a large percentage are estranged parents and grandparents, who come on here to share their experiences and support one another. Although I am not estranged as such, I have had difficult relationships…

How did you find that Lemsip? And what made you suspicious?

Smileless2012 Sun 09-Oct-22 13:16:08

Maybe the OP was referring to being new to the estrangement forum, not GN.

lemsip Sun 09-Oct-22 13:24:29

google user name and gransnet, that's all. No suspicion.
the op is welcome new or not.

you can google your own user name and gransnet and it will pop up if you've been on here.

It is a topic heading "Estrangement" so covers any estrangement. No matter who someone is estranged from or whether they are the one who was estranged or the one who did the estranging.

Individual threads break it up into smaller sub subjects that may be general, as in support or may cover different tyoes of scenarios or individual situations.

So you can pick and choose what threads are right for you and your situation. Or maybe what threads you feel you can receive and show support on.

"Is it for those children to tell us how awful we are"

Adult children who have estranged a parent also use this forum. They are talking about their own family dynamics not anyone else's.

It might be useful at times to read threads that talk about behaviours others did not like and walked away from if you think that is something that might help you to resolution.

Anyone offering kindness and support is generally welcome on any thread as far as I can tell

So NOT new here .

Why would you do that though?
It makes people feel unwelcome as if this is some sort of "closed" club (which it isn't).

That is exactly my understanding too.

Norah Sun 09-Oct-22 16:06:11

Seems to be for estrangers and those estranged by others.

I doubt there is much from children saying anything awful.

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Oct-22 16:07:04

I think that if I’d joined in March and not posted much, I’d still consider myself quite new.

lemsip do you do that with everyone?
Of course you were suspicious

What do you think the search box is for?

VioletSky Sun 09-Oct-22 16:10:51

Previous post is on estrangement... looks OK, nothing unwelcoming

MerylStreep Sun 09-Oct-22 16:13:49

This is the problem when the correct word isn’t used.
The OP asked if this forum was for etc. This whole site is the forum, within that you have different threads

Forum; subforum or board; thread; post

Gransnet does seem to use the word ‘forum’ incorrectly.

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Oct-22 16:18:29

This thread is really tetchy! grin

I have tried to search once before and it didn't work.I'll know in future thank you.?

That's you told, Kircubbin!

I learnt something new today! Gransnet search box has rarely worked well for me but searching using Google as lemsip suggests above, works better.

nadateturbe Sun 09-Oct-22 22:22:52

I just googled to find out more about the "Billy Plays" and it brought my post up on GN ?.

Search always works for me though.
