OAP ageist TV

Did anyone else see that dreadful programme last night (ITV?) about how stupid OAPs are re new technologies.

They dragged out all the old faithful, anxious for publicity such as Lionel Blair and Dotty Dot and threw in a few more.
The theme was that most OAPs are completely ignorant when it comes to new technology ‘I don’t know what an App is!’ and unwilling to embrace it.

Notice they didn’t invite the likes of Lulu or David Attenborough!

Very ageist and not even remotely amusing ....except when Alexa kept offering them recipes for Mexican Stew.

I thought the same!

EllanVannin Wed 10-Apr-19 09:46:38

I watched it, and wasn't surprised at their gormlessness because for most of their lives they haven't had to think or do anything for themselves anyway so it came as no surprise to me. They're not " ordinary " OAP's are they ?

EllanVannin Wed 10-Apr-19 09:47:15

These people don't live in the real world !

Our local Co-op has just had a makeover, including installation of self-service tills. I went in there yesterday, early evening. A queue of younger generation-ists waiting at the only manned checkout. And who was the only person using the self-serve? Yep! A little slightly hunchbacked grey haired old lady (me). Managing fine too. hmm

Gonegirl Wed 10-Apr-19 09:52:40

That programme would have made me so cross!

I find there’s a awful lot of ageism about. I’m 73 and well up on technology thank you very much , I’m lucky to
be fit and well and am very active both physically and mentally

They were so stupid, even having been told how to address Alexa, they did not do it properly so really no wonder they were offered a recipe for Mexican Stew instead of scones.

I asked my Alexa for a recipe to see if it worked and no problem - I had a choice of 500! That lot could come here for basic lessons and I am a technophobe!

Well I am going to don my tin hat and duck behind the sofa and say I thought it very funny and not at all ageist but something quite a lot of older people think of the way things are going to be in the future.
As for self service tills I never ever use them not because I am not confident in using them but I am putting someone out of a job,I would rather wait 10mins to be served by someone and give them working hours than to use those tills.(am now behind the sofa)grin

kittylester Wed 10-Apr-19 10:10:12

Our co-OP had an update too. The self service tills do not take cards, or occasionally they take cards but not cash. They do not take the voucher for the Times and there are often more broken that working.

So, no-one uses them!

Charleygirl5 Wed 10-Apr-19 10:10:34

glammanana I totally agree re the self service tills- I also wait in a queue because I do not want to see the till staff out of a job.

One local supermarket has one person behind a till and the remainder are self service whereas the other when required has every till covered. They still look after their customers.

annodomini Wed 10-Apr-19 10:22:37

I agree with you, glamma. I prefer to have a nice, friendly greeting at the checkout which I find at both our Waitrose and Aldi. Aldi doesn't have self checkouts...yet. I didn't see that programme or I would have chucked my 'smart' phone at my 'smart' TV.

I was hoping it would be like the old Grumpy old Man/Woman series which I enjoyed, but I was not at all amused apart from the Alexa responses. I have removed it from my list to be recorded. And yes, I can work my digital recorder!smile

Anja Wed 10-Apr-19 11:35:29

Oh yes Shysal loved the Grumpy series!

glammanana Wed 10-Apr-19 12:05:20

I loved the Grumpy series it should be brought back,I have the good fortune to have my own grumpy old man by the name of Mr Glamma.

EllanVannin Wed 10-Apr-19 12:08:37

That's alright Glammanana. I'm Mrs Meldrew ! smile

Anja Wed 10-Apr-19 12:15:17

I remember going to see the live show of Grumpy Old Women with Jenny Eclair, I think Shelia Hancock and one other. Only one brave/foolish man in the whole audience.

Laughed enough to give my face muscles a full work out ???

I often bypass the queue for the self-service machines and get through the serviced tills much faster. I can and do use the self-service machines when necessary.

Many of us have been using computers since well before many of those who laugh at us were born. I started using computers in 1979 and by 1984 was designing a departmental cmputer network.

Sheilasue Thu 11-Apr-19 10:25:50

No didn’t see it. It would be nice if they spoke to senior citizens who live in the real world. My aunt is 82 and is a whizz on things to do with the internet, puts me to shame.
I think it’s insulting, I know a lot of people who are old and like me manage quite well.

HannahLoisLuke Thu 11-Apr-19 10:26:04

I was mildly annoyed by this programme too.
All the same old faces from other "old folk" reality shows.
Sheila Ferguson (big mouth) Amanda Barrie, Stanley Johnson, Lionel Blair et al.
However, I am currently stumped by technology myself, having just changed my wifi router I cannot now connect my iPad to my printer grrrr.
Have been online and tried all the tricks, no luck.
Scratches head, and thinks about calling grandson ?

Stella14 Thu 11-Apr-19 10:26:10

I recorded it, but based on your description, I’d hate it. Don’t think I’ll bother - Delate!

GrannyAnnie2010 Thu 11-Apr-19 10:27:31

At my local Co-op store, the non self service till is "manned" by an employee who is busy elsewhere (stacking shelves, for instance), and comes running back to that one till to serve the one person who isn't self-checking out. There's a pause while they get their bunch of keys out, tap in their PIN, then start to serve you. So, far from keeping staff in a job, I feel as though I'm adding to their already busy work load. My only gripe with self-checkouts is that there are always far fewer accepting cash than card.

KatyK Thu 11-Apr-19 10:28:08

I recorded as I enjoy some of these things such as The Marigold stuff but this was awful.

razzmatazz Thu 11-Apr-19 10:28:33

Totally agree. Awful programme. I am 'ol" and have Alexa , a smartphone , an Apply PC and manage them all.

razzmatazz Thu 11-Apr-19 10:29:32

Sorry, I meant old on my post , not ole
