PERFECTED POACHED EGGS - MICROWAVE

I love poached eggs and have finally perfected after a lot of trial and error what I think is the best way to poach eggs in the microwave.

I have used this method to poach 4-5 eggs at the same time and all of them being cooked consistently the same.

Purchase a plastic bowl that is microwave safe that will hold 3-5 eggs comfortably. You could use a glass bowl but it will be too hot to handle.

Fill the bowl with water around 3/4" from the edge.

Pour in some white vinegar.

Put the bowl in the microwave on high for roughly 4-5 minutes or until the water just starts to boil.

Take the bowl out and gently crack the eggs into the water.

The whites will start to cook.

Take a large spoon and gently swirl the water in the bowl. Move the spoon around the outside of the eggs so you don't break the yokes.

This doesn't have to be done very long. This will help the eggs to all have even cooking.

Put the bowl back in the microwave for another 1-3/4 - 2 minutes on high. Time depends on how many eggs and how much water is in the bowl.

Take the bowl out of the microwave and the eggs should be done or very close to being done. Gently swirl the water again.

Fold up some paper towels or napkins on a plate or the lid of the bowl which is what I do.

Use the large spoon and take each egg out of the water and place them on the napkin to drain. Use a napkin to blot the water off the eggs.

Empty the water out of the bowl.

Gently lift all the eggs on the paper towel like a cradle and place them back into bowl.

Season to taste and enjoy perfect poached eggs.

Or you could put 2 inches of water in a pan on the stove , break in egg, wait until ‘set’ - serve !!

What a palaver! I just break the eggs into a plastic bowl and put them in the egg boiler. Perfect eggs in minutes. Simples.
I really don't like poached eggs that have had vinegar in the water. Sometimes get them in hotels.

I put a very small amount of white wine vinegar in the water, about a teaspoon, then swirl the water just before adding the egg(s). The trick is to keep the water just below boiling.

I can honestly say I've never noticed any difference in taste with the addition of the vinegar.

Alternatively I pierce the shells and cook them in my Instant Pot (electric pressure cooker, just as I would for hard boiled eggs, but only for a couple of minutes instead of 5 or 6. Peel and break open on toast. Perfect - no white 'fluff' or wastage!

Prefer soft boiled myself. Love soft boiled.

I echo the comment that this is a palaver.
I bring a small pan of water to the boil , add a dash of vinegar, swirl the water with a wooden spoon, add the egg or eggs, turn the heat down and when the White is setting, lift out with a slotted spoon onto freshly made toast.

I heat a pan of water and crack my eggs into cling film, twist the tops and pop into the hot water. Easy peasy.

Do you mean you cook the eggs in the cling film gillybob? Are you sure that’s safe? Plastic leaching into the food and so on... hmm

I melt a bit of butter in a glass dish in the microwave, add the egg, cover with a piece of kitchen roll, cook for 1 minute on 70% power, pause and check, continue a bit longer if need be, allow to finish cooking outside the microwave.
This is for one or two eggs at most. Serve.

I enjoy two poached eggs on baked beans on toast as a quick, healthy and easy lunch. Takes me less then 4 minutes to make in entirety.
Pop slice of bread into toaster, half a tin of reduced sugar and salt b.beans (Sainsbury's 4 pack cost £1), into special dish with lid in microwave for 45 secs.
Whilst that is cooking, break two eggs into microwave egg poacher and use fork to pierce yolks. Once b.beans are done, place this in microwave for two minutes on low heat.
Forgot to say, that my first thing is to put mug under water heater, with tea bag, to have with this meal.
Toast popped out of toaster and put on plate, no need for butter or anything, cover with heated b.beans, then the two eggs, done to perfection put on top. Last thing is to remove t.bag from mug and add milk. Voila, my lunch in well under five minutes
The art of poaching eggs in a microwave is really to know your microwave. You will need to experiment to find exactly the timings and heat settings to get the eggs as you like them. I like mine, with firm whites and runny yolks.
There is no faffing about with this with water, vinegar etc. and I get excellent results every time.
Do remember to pierce egg yolks before cooking, otherwise they will explode in the microwave.
This wonderful lunch works out at about 60 - 70p

You need really fresh eggs for perfect poached eggs!! I cook mine in a pan of simmering water ( no vinegar). I swirl the water before I crack the eggs in. I have to confess the eggs are never more than a couple of days old as we have our own hens!!

I use eggs I bought in Sainsburys. I only shop once a week, so eggs I use for this microwave poached eggs can be in my fridge for anything up to 10 days.

Does nobody use an egg poacher these days. Love mine

Alima Tue 04-Jun-19 19:17:32

I inherited Mum’s egg poacher, used it for years. When it disintegrated I bought some of those plasticy things for doing poached eggs. No good at all. Thanks Auntyflo, you have convinced me to buy a new poacher.

If the eggs are fresh you don’t need vinegar!

Auntieflo Tue 04-Jun-19 22:23:25

Good for you Alima. I bought mine a good few years ago now, from a charity shop. It was from John Lewis and is stainless steel, and still looks as good as new. So shop around and may be you will find one.
