Cooking instructions

I have just been trying to read cooking instructions on a pasty....tiny print, dark red on brown card, and well hidden. White print on pale green is another favourite..and always on the back, so you have to turn the product upside down to read it, which can be disastrous.

I'm sure I remember that Sainsbury used to have a policy of printing instructions in large clear print, for the benefit of customers without their glasses.
I don't shop at Sainsbury's now, so don't know if they still do this. It seems a no-brainer.

I suppose that when you look at cooking instructions, you have already bought it, so shops are more concerned with designing a package which looks attractive on the shelf?

What did I do?!

I rarely bother to read cooking instructions, unless the item is to be cooked in the container, when I check whether lid has to be on or off and whether film needs to be pierced.

allule you have done nothing wrong.

It was Dandamen who's post was repported.

Our co-op used to hang a magnifying glass up over the freezers so people without their reading glasses could read the packages.

They seemed to have stopped doing so, but it was a really good idea.

I mostly ask from the expert person as that experience helps a lot while cooking.

My gripe is about those pre prepared chickens, on a foil dish, cook in the bag style. The cooking info is on the bottom of the pack, so you have to hold it above your head and screw your neck round to read them. Why don't they put the cooking info on the front of the blessed pack? Simples!

allule DH likes those pasties occasionally and I know what you mean, the instructions are ridiculously tiny; he asks me to read them out to him.
Perhaps we should email the company!

Blinko that's far too simples grin

I thought I was the only one who had problems reading the print. Since there's so much emphasis on food safety these days, perhaps the food authorities who have lots of diktats on labelling, should also make sure it's possible to read, without strong light and strong glasses!

LadyGracie Fri 09-Aug-19 11:30:40

I ask DH since his cataract surgery he can see everything.

He even asked to have a look at my bottom front teeth, then asked why I didn’t get the slightly discoloured pinhead sized white filling replaced!

Yes coloured print on anything but white is a nightmare for us too.

I sometimes take a photo of the instructions on my phone and then enlarge it to be able to read it. I think you can adjust the contrast as well, but Ibagree with everyone - we shouldnt HAVE to do it. It's not only older people who have impaired vision.

I keep one of these in the kitchen. Very useful for tiny instructions.

Who are these idiots whose posts across many threads are deleted?
Males with too much time...?

Barmeyoldbat Wed 21-Aug-19 19:40:51

Blimey who could believe that an innocent post about cooking instruction could turn up so much unacceptable answers.

Me, I don't often read the instructions, I am a chuck it in and hope for the best cook. Works for me.

gabriellaMy problem is I only get to see them when they are deleted and miss out on the gossip.

Hey guys, this is Cynthia

Preparing the best pasta can be really difficult at first. It was almost impossible for us to master how to do it without proper step-by-step tutorial from the professional chefs.

I’ve watched hundreds of tutorials online, but nothing beats this simple, clear-to-the-cut video here: dausel.co/swIWJs

Click the link above, and you’ll land on an intermediate page, just click “I’m not a robot” to continue, and you’ll land on the best Youtube Tutorial video on pasta cooking where it shows step-by-step in how to prepare al-dente pasta even if you’re a beginner.

I hope that someone show me this when I first learning how to prepare my first pasta dish. That could save me hours of banging my head on the wall, trying different methods out.
Again, you can watch the tutorial here: dausel.co/swIWJs

I’m almost 100% sure this tutorial is going to blow your mind away.
I am a big fan of this chef and he makes it ridiculously easy! No joke.

Hope it helps smile
Cynthia
