I hesitate to praise it as I don't want to create a run on it but I'd say mock bacon is up with the best vegetarian substitutes, and is the only worthy mock meat .

Why the need for " mock bacon "?

notanan2 Sat 02-May-20 14:39:11

Why the need for anything?
Because it tastes nice!
I like it and Im not veggie.
Choices are good

Susan56 Sat 02-May-20 14:47:54

We are vegetarian. My husband loves the mock bacon,I can’t stand it!

May7 Sat 02-May-20 15:00:02

Which mock bacon is this please ?? The Quorn one is awful I think but if anyone knows of a better one I'd be really grateful

GrandmaMoira Sat 02-May-20 15:21:32

Turkey bacon is disgustingly salty. I've not tried others but don't like quorn anyway.

Alexa Sat 02-May-20 15:23:36

May, it is the Quorn one, I just checked. I admit it's not as succulent as streaky bacon but it has more taste and is less tough than than back rashers.

Oopsadaisy3 Sat 02-May-20 15:25:04

DD and her family are all vegetarian and they love the ‘Facon’

I think it’s horrid, but they children have never tasted real bacon so don’t know the difference.

Oopsadaisy3 Sat 02-May-20 15:25:41

PS Facon is Fake Bacon I expect you sussed that one out!

EllanVannin Sat 02-May-20 15:30:54

Aren't vegetarians supposed to dislike anything to do with meat ? Which is why they're vegetarian,

GagaJo Sat 02-May-20 16:16:29

My daughter and GS are veggie. They both love Quorn bacon. It’d be lovely in red beans and rice.

Mock bacon is an oxymoron like fun run.

May7 Sat 02-May-20 18:28:42

Thanks alexa I’ll give that a miss although my granddaughter loves it and eats it raw which is quite safe. I’ll look for Facon though and keep trying

"Mock bacon is an oxymoron like fun run."

Mock bacon and fun run are both for new breed of puritans.

May7 Sun 03-May-20 11:30:55

Perhaps we should start a thread about food oxymorons
happy meal
John Bishop says nothing happy in One of them ?

@May7 the V-Bites Maple one is my favourite, and is sold at Holland and Barrett. I run a small vegan B&B and make carrot bacon which is delicious and very popular with guests; much cheaper too!
@EllanVannin, it isn't dislike of meat that is the reason for most vegetarians and vegans not eating it; it's because they don't want to be the cause of suffering.

May7 Sun 03-May-20 19:59:37

Thank you I’ll look out for that choughdancer how do you make carrot bacon or is that a trade secret?

jacq10 Sun 03-May-20 20:20:34

I tried it in a quiche lorraine one time for vegetarian son but won't be rushing to do it again! I thought it tasted awful when I tried a bit before cooking but, although it improved slightly when it was cooked and son and other guests thought it okay, I would have rather added peppers or mushrooms and wouldn't use it again.

Alexa Sun 03-May-20 22:23:36

I like it best on squashy white bread with plenty of pepper , ketchup, and olive oil

grannyrebel7 Mon 04-May-20 22:23:43

On the topic of bacon does anyone know how to make crispy bacon like the Americans?

Oopsadaisy3 Mon 04-May-20 22:50:15

Buy a decent dry cured streaky bacon and fry in butter, the dry cured is very thin, DH only eats crispy bacon. The dry cured is about £4 a pack and the slices are quite thin. Well worth the extra money as you don’t get any water frothing in the pan.

choughdancer Tue 05-May-20 13:23:44

@May7 not at all! Here's the link to the recipe I use. I do use the dehydrator option though. www.yumsome.com/how-to-make-vegan-carrot-bacon/

quizqueen Tue 05-May-20 13:28:59

If you don't want to eat meat, why do you want to eat something made to look like meat!!!

May7 Tue 05-May-20 14:16:17

Thanks choughdancer I’ll definitely give that a go.
