Toast in beer making

When I was a child in the early 50's, my mother made beer in a huge terracotta bowl, glazed yellow inside.

I was too young to know the recipe but vividly remember her floating a thick slice of her home-made, toasted bread on the surface of the liquid and maybe sprinkling yeast on it.

Did anyone else's Mum or Grandma do this?

Nowadays, bread is used in commercial beermaking to utilise loaves that would otherwise be thrown away and reduce the amont of virgin grains required. Craft beer video here:

Yes, I seem to remember yeast being scattered on toast and floated on a large bowl of ginger beer when it was being made.
