Have you seen this scheme for people to buy over-stocked food (both meals and ingredients) for as little as £2-£4 for a carrier bagful?
At 6.40 yesterday, Daughter and SiL got a bag of that day's surplus bread and bakery products for £2. Bread, doughnuts, scones, rolls. All fresh, but would have been thrown out.
You install an app on your phone and check what is available in your area, book a bag, and turn up to collect it. Using this app means it isn't thrown into food waste but gets used.

It's such a great idea.
I really must have a proper look at it.

Sounds great.

MissAdventure Thu 20-Aug-20 11:13:01

I've just downloaded the app, but there is nothing in my area. Yet. smile

MissAdventure Thu 20-Aug-20 11:25:22

Just had a browse, and I think I've got the measure of how it works now.

In my area I could have had five packs of butter (which would freeze), but there isn't an app for a Windows phone or PC. I have asked them about that. It sounded as though that hadn't occurred to them, but they were grateful for the information.

Someone on their Facebook page was complaining about having to drive to get it.

MissAdventure Thu 20-Aug-20 12:00:42

I would have to catch a bus, which I don't mind too much, so I'm going to be checking out shops which are on my route home from work.
Off one bus, get my bag of goodies, onto the next bus, and Bob's your uncle (hopefully!)

The two shops where I live are sold out, but I presume something may come up any time through the day.

Shame I don't have a smart phone!

MiniMoon Thu 20-Aug-20 12:19:09

My DD uses this for the surplus food from Costa Coffee. The children love the surprise cakes and pastries for after dinner dessert.

Elegran Thu 20-Aug-20 12:30:29

Lucca To be fair, I think she was concerned about the environment, but my first thought was the same as yours.

Elegran Thu 20-Aug-20 12:33:12

grandMattie You never know, an app for Windows as well as the Android and Apple ones may follow after my comment to them about not being able to download either of them.

MissAdventure Thu 20-Aug-20 13:37:46

I keep checking it now, to make sure I'm not missing out. smile

Thanks for sharing Elegran. I’m going to put it to the test this evening. Local M&S garage shop half mile from my house showing a £12 bag of goods for £4. Said it could be ready meals, fruit and veg or bakery. Payment upfront and collection slot of 9-10pm.
I’ve been transported back to my childhood and the excitement of a lucky bag!

MissAdventure Thu 20-Aug-20 14:38:03

Oh, how exciting!
A real life jamboree bag smile

Grannynannywanny Thu 20-Aug-20 14:41:11

Fingers crossed it won’t be full of bakery produce as I live alone and lacking in will power. I might have made a pot of tea and be sitting with a bag of muffins at 11pm! Fingers crossed for a few M&S ready meals

MissAdventure Thu 20-Aug-20 14:50:31

Will you let us know, please?

Grannynannywanny Thu 20-Aug-20 14:58:11

I’ll report back.. once I’ve wiped the custard/lemon/blueberry donut fillings from my chin!

Elegran Thu 20-Aug-20 14:59:50

If it is all bakery stuff, you'll have to go out and buy a huge freezer to store it in. What a lot of money you will have saved!

They have shops too in Yorkshire, it's run by the real junk food project folk.
Excellent organisation.
When lockdown began, people could register to have free deliveries if they couldn't get any food.
DH and I worked as volunteer delivery drivers taking the parcels out for them to people shielding when there were no delivery slots available at supermarkets.

Grannynannywanny Thu 20-Aug-20 21:29:44

I’ve just come home with my bag of goodies and I’m delighted with it. It said £12 worth for £4 and it’s at least that. I reserved a bag in our local M&S garage.
It contained 2 spaghetti and meatballs meals, a Caesar salad, twin pack of bread and butter pudding, a chocolate twist, an almond croissant and a chocolate dessert. The original price on the Caesar salad alone was £3.90

Cor!!! What a bargain!
Go easy on those pastries though.wink
