Why on earth can’t I find pudding rice in supermarkets anymore?
I can buy it from Amazon but only in a far greater quantity than I want or a smaller amount at a very expensive price.
Anyone else struggling to find it on the shop shelves?

Is it Arborio rice? It looks the same.

Have you tried the CoOp

Tesco sell it that’s where I get mine.

There should be some around (short grain rice) for puds, although not many people make them now I expect.

Waitrose have it in stock at the moment

shysal Fri 11-Sep-20 14:45:48

I had to ask in Asda, and found that it wasn't on the shelf with the other types of rice, but with the tinned rice pudding, custard etc., and on the bottom shelf.
I love rice pudding, especially the skin. I use Mary Berry's recipe, with extra butter!

Bought it from Sainsbury recently.

My last lot was from Sainsbury’s, but as shysal said, it wasn’t where you would expect it to be, I also had to ask.
Think it was in the baking section.

Use risotto rice or rice for paella. They are both short grain and no different from pudding rice. I have given up looking for pudding rice and just use one of the above.

Our Tesco's have it in the puddings Isle with the tinned rice etc.

Our shops mostly do have it, but why they don’t put it with other rice I don’t know - it’s usually shelved with tins of Ambrosia, etc. I’ve had to ask before finding it.

I’ve made rice pudding very successfully with arborio (risotto) rice. First did it at a dd’s when there was a lot of milk that needed using up, and plenty of risotto rice in the cupboard.

I found some in Sainsbury recently - like you I'd been looking for ages

Waitrose have it in stock at the moment

Just added it to my order, thank you Daisymae

Comfort food!

Yuk- it reminds me of my school dinners. Nothing would persuade me to eat it now.

twiglet77 Mon 14-Sep-20 22:59:20

Waitrose usually have it in stock, on the bottom of the shelves with the other dry rice (tinned rice is in a different aisle with desserts). It's labelled 'short grain rice', not 'pudding rice', it's the same thing.

I’ve tried my local Aldi, Sainsburys, Co-Op and Tesco. Today I bought arborio rice and will try that.
Thank you for all your answers.

maydonoz Wed 07-Oct-20 16:32:32

I usually find it in Tesco or Sainsbury's in small packs.

jerseygirl Wed 07-Oct-20 16:36:54

You can get it in sainsburys, asda and tesco. It will either be labelled as pudding rice or short grain rice. I buy it regularly. You cant beat a home made rice pud !!

M0nica Wed 07-Oct-20 16:41:12

Its usually just called 'short grain rice', in the way semolina is described as polenta. Very few people make rice pudding these days.

toscalily Wed 07-Oct-20 16:42:21

Definately still sell this in Sainsburys, saw it on the shelf above where the tinned rice was.

dogsmother Wed 07-Oct-20 16:50:05

Oh yum!
I made one this week it was with risotto rice very tasty, sadly had to compensate after cooking as I failed to add any sugar !!

blossom14 Wed 07-Oct-20 19:19:13

I used some to make a slow oven cooked rice pudding during lockdown. DH said it tasted no better than Ambrosia.shock
