I've been given a jar of pears in Calvados which I am very pleased with. However I would love some ideas of what to do with them or some serving ideas.

I thought Calvados must be a place, I ve never heard of it !

Lucky you.
You could make a variation of a tarte tatin and make a reduction of the calvados as a glaze.
Or serve them cold with a calvados reduction and cream.

Yes, it is a region in Normandy Northern France.

My mother thought fruit with booze served with ice cream the best thing ever. She had a special bottle of liqueur that she poured over strawberries.

Mamie Sat 12-Dec-20 19:37:53

It is a département (county) in Normandy and an apple brandy. I would just serve them with ice-cream. The local speciality pudding is tergoule, a cinnamon flavoured rice pudding. I have never had it with pears though. You could just extract the pears and drink the Calva (but not too much). ?

I have a bottle of it from 1948, given to me by a neighbour and made by her father.

In Brittany, the neighbouring region, I've seen them wrapped in puff pastry or as fillings in crepes (pancakes). Both with a big blob of ice cream.

One of my mother’s star dishes was pears poached in red wine, but I don’t think I’ve ever had pears in Calvados. Sounds good.

Upside down cake, trifle, whatever you would use preserved fruit for (like tinned), adults only though!!

Callistemon Sat 12-Dec-20 19:53:50

Just eat with cream, creme fraiche or good icecream

Lovely.

Ellianne Sat 12-Dec-20 19:58:08

Sorry Mamie, I called Calvados a region. Of course it is a département, 14.
I was engrossed in Strictly, not concentrating!

Nonsense!
No dinner is complete without the trou normand
Our Norman friends make their own Pommeau - a mixture of Calva and home made cidre - now that really packs a punch!

Ellianne Sat 12-Dec-20 20:29:44

Wow MawBe that sounds lethal! grin

I wish I hadn't sent my Rumtopf to the charity shop

GrannyGravy13 Sat 12-Dec-20 21:01:09

Upside down cake or warmed with cream.

I always put a dash of calvados in the gravy when we have roast pork.

Ellianne Sat 12-Dec-20 21:03:02

Yes, GG13, in chicken recipes too.

BlueBelle Sat 12-Dec-20 21:03:47

You’re all so posh I don’t get past cider ???

Callistemon Sat 12-Dec-20 22:00:54

I just slosh in red wine, Bluebelle.
I'm a pleb

Although I have cooked pork with cider (semi-posh)

Puzzler61 Sat 12-Dec-20 22:12:56

As someone else said: upside-down pear cake and drizzle the liquor over it.

I was just thinking the same, Callistemon!

Though I wouldn’t be putting Calvados in it. Calvados and I have a brief and very painful (for me) history. Suffice it to say the day after the night before came close to the day after I had the smallpox vaccine and seriously thought I was about to die....

Ellianne Sat 12-Dec-20 22:35:13

I'm thinking there has to be a reason why calvados (with apples or pears) comes from the same area as those delicious soft French cheeses, so here's another suggestion ......
Toasted sourdough with a smooth layer of Camembert or Pont-L'Evèque, topped with the pears in calvados.
