Home made chips - an alternative to an Actifry?

Our third Actifry is on its last legs and I was wondering if any of you can give some advice about maybe Ninja air fryer.

Does that make good chips and if so, do you have to shake them much?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a Ninja. It does not make as good chips as the Actifry as it does not circulate them and you need to keep turning them. Also it takes a while to get the best temperature and times.

Having said that I use it all the time as a pressure cooker, it cooks a chicken really well on pressure or the crisper. It cooks oven chips a whole better than an oven and much faster. The slow cooker I have also found good but you have to heat it up first.

Thanks dragonfly. I don’t like pressure cookers and I have a good slow cooker so I was thinking of getting the one that is just an air fryer.

I don’t use oven chips so it sounds as though we may be better with another Actifry.

My step grandchildren stayed with us for a few days and I hadn’t noticed them watching me but as soon as their mum came for them, they went running to her shouting ‘Nanny Liz made chips OUT OF POTATOES’.

I have the Ninja grill and it's an excellent air fryer. Chips do need moved around during cooking but always turn out lovely. Best kitchen tool ever!!!

I will watch this thread with interest as I have recently purchased an air fryer. Out of interest how long do chips (not frozen ones) take to cook ? I can't seem to get it right somehow !

I have a ninja foodi which I love, but the air fryer basket is a bit small in the 6.5 quart.
I would love one of the grills. Here is the Salted Pepper demonstrating two models.
Maybe this will help you.

I've a small air fryer, and it takes approx 20 minutes to cook fresh home cut chips.
I coat them in a little oil and add seasonings before cooking them.

Liz46, I was about to ask exactly the same question. Ours only seem to last 2-3 years then need replaced. The one we have just now makes good chips, but you need to stir and turn them a few times. I want one that does all that for you, like the halo one we had a few years ago. It had a paddle , but I think its been discontinued.

Thanks for the link MiniMoon. That looks useful.

At the moment we are leaning towards another Actifry: they are on offer in Argos. Maybe the video will change my mind again!

Thanks Minimoon I'll give them a try later today when the GC arrive smile

Fond memories of making chips for my DD and friends one New Years Eve, post party. The amazement that chips can be MADE from potatoes was brilliant. They still talk about those chip butties now and they’re mid 30s.

Home made chips here are made in a chip pan, possibly once a month, and are lovely

I just slice up potatoes, spray with oil, sprinkle of garlic granules/sea salt/paprika or whatever and into the oven. We had them with bbq last time and they went down a treat.

I just par boil chipped potatoes, drain, add a dash of sunflower oil a little salt and give them a shake (with the saucepan lid on) and spread them out on a lined oven sheet in a hot oven, turn once half way though, really nice. Takes about half an hour.

Do gransnet have local groups? Will be looking to make friends when I move closer to my daughter for childcare.
