Gammon steaks

My husband did a favour for a farmer friend and was given 3 huge gammon steaks as a 'thank you'. Lovely!
How do I cook them? they are almost half an inch thick - should I oven cook them first and then fry/grill?
Then what to serve them with? Potatoes sound boring, chips don't seem right - we don't like parsley so a sauce is out ... hmm

Honey and mustard sauce

As they’re so thick, share one between two maybe? I’d grill it/them.

I do like a gammon steak. I have a Ninja foodi grill and cook them on that. Before I got the grill, I used to oven bake them.
If you don't want potatoes or chips, vegetable fried rice would go well.
Or what about colcannon?
I make a pineapple sauce similar to can (15 ounce) unsweetened crushed pineapple (in natural juice, undrained, 1 1/2 cups) 1 cup packed brown sugar 4 1/2 teaspoons low-sodium soy sauce 4 1/2 teaspoons ketchup 1 1/2 teaspoons ground mustard 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (more or less to taste) 3/4 cup water 2 tablespoons cornstarch (+1 teaspoon) THIS one, but I do half the quantities. I never can find crushed pineapple either, so substitute a can of finely chopped pineapple slices.

I think gammon steaks are delicious with cauliflower cheese. It adds some moisture and I also add grilled or baked tomatoes. Any kind of potato would be fine. I’d go for sauté or croquettes.

I’m a gammon egg and chips person but would also cheesy mash or jacket potato with veggies. Like others say if they are very thick oven cook and share one.

I like gammon steaks with macaroni cheese, peas and a big grilled mushroom. I would oven cook the gammon steak if thick and share one.

You could google an Abel and Cole recipe where you bash out the steaks and fill them with leeks and cheese, and grill..

I just fry them (a mere mist of oil in the pan). Dh is partial to pineapple slices on top, and we usually have them with jacket potatoes and salad or (homemade) coleslaw.

I would oven bake as it requires less supervision than a grill. I use my Remoska to save electricity. A bit of sauce helps, so macaroni cheese, cauliflower cheese or Dauphinoise potatoes would go well. Enjoy!

Bake them in a sauce, if you don’t like parsley use a white sauce and add maybe cheese and whatever spices you do like.
If you try to fry it it could go very hard and spoil, enjoy.

Cauliflower cheese for me with gammon steaks. Cook them in the oven.

All of above are delicious. We sometimes have them with Dauphinois (? spelling) potatoes and whatever veg is around. I was buying gammon steaks in Tesco the other day and they were over £5 for 2! Used to be a reasonably cheap meal! Then I found a club card deal for 2 with a cheesy barbecue sauce for £3.50 and were lovely grilled with green beans and potato wedges.

Sweet potatoes. Either chips or baked in their jackets. And a fried egg on the gammon. Loads of mushrooms.

Cook in the oven with a hunter sauce and grated cheese.

I serve gammon steaks with rice and sweetcorn mixed, with some butter mixed in and some cheese sauce on the gammon.

very popular in my family.

Of course the popular way to do it is with fried pineapple on the fried/grilled gammon steak and served with chips and peas.

Or slice them into small pieces and make a Spaghetti Carbonara.

I recently bought 750g outdoor bred pork smoked gammon joint in M&S for £5.50 and sliced it into 5 lovely gammon steaks and froze them individually. They are delicious grilled in the air fryer.

Since I’ve thought to do this I no longer buy regular bacon and find it tastier and cheaper to do it this way. I portion a bacon joint into thick sliced bacon and freeze in single portions.

What a fabulous idea. I will copy that!
